Christian Conservatives Uniting Behind McCain

At a meeting Tuesday in Denver, about 100 conservative Christian leaders from around the country agreed to unite behind the candidacy of John McCain, a politician they have long distrusted, marking the latest in a string of movement that bodes well for McCain's general election prospects among the Republican base.

"Collectively we feel that he will support and advance those moral values that we hold much greater than Obama, who in our view will decimate moral values," said Mat Staver, the chairman of Liberty Counsel, a legal advocacy group, who previously supported Mike Huckabee's candidacy.

"There are people who came through the primary with very mixed emotions of the candidate," Staver continued, noting that many in the group had been in Denver to attend a separate meeting for pastors. "This event was to put those aside."

The group included leaders like Phyllis Schlafly, the long-time leader of Eagle Forum; Steve Strang, the publisher of Charisma magazine; Phil Burress, a prominent Ohio marriage and anti-pornography activist; David Barton, the founder of WallBuilders and Donald Hodel, a former secretary of the Interior, who previously served on the board of Focus on the Family. Jim Dobson, the head of Focus and an outspoken critic of McCain, did not attend. The McCain campaign was also not directly represented at the meeting.

I will work to make sure Barack Obama isn't elected president. I have even put a McCain 2008 sticker on my car here in ultra-liberal Portland Oregon. I simply cannot stand by and do that to our service men, unborn children, and our capitalist system.

Quite sad, I detest McCain but I absolutely loathe and fear Hussein and will reluctantly pull for McCain if for nothing else judge appointments and our brave military members ( two of which are my boys ).

Frankly, I am stunned this is coming out of “Time”.

I am Christian, evangelical, conservative. And this tripe about some of us joining Obama is ridiculous.

I don’t care if Rick Warren writes “The Purpose Driven Candidate” for Obama, the man will not get my vote.

It is about time the LameStream Media understood that, and I am glad some do.

I feel sure that Obama is not Christian or Muslim, for his favorite god is the Hindu “Monkey god”. He carries a picture of one, and some one is going to have one made for him, covered in gold. Obama will tell anybody, anything just to get elected. I think Obama would bring a grief to America that they have never seen before.

I haven't decided yet. My vote will not be dependent upon who others get behind though. I want to see who JM’s VP is going to be first, in case we have to impeach him.

Agreed.

Overall, despite my disagreements — John McCain is a patriot, a genuinely good man, humble, rock-solid on national security, generally solid on economics, and pretty sharp on Christian issues.

He is not Reagan ideologically, but he reminds me of Reagan in other ways.

- His ability to restore somewhat waning pride in the country — and his recognition that such American pride is important.
- His humility also reminds me of Reagan ... he remains unwilling to use his noble service or his family as pawns for political gain.
- He is a true, legit patriot and war hero. Any attempts to say otherwise are simple political posturing.
- His steadfastness in the face of opposition. In this case, I was impressed with the guts it took to stand up to we conservatives when he had a genuine disagreement over immigration reform. He was wrong ... but I can respect a man that’ll stick to his principles, and damn the consequences to his campaign.
- His willingness to support the Iraq War in the face of media opposition. He is a champion of a conservative vision for national security.
- His understanding of the sacrifices required of our soldiers.
- His willingness to put his money where his mouth is on the war ... as two of his sons have served terms in Iraq.

Ultimately, I believe McCain truly understands the Greatness of America. Ideologically, I have a couple of problems ... particularly in immigration and environmentalism. And, I won’t hesitate to voice those concerns when the issue arises.

But, overall, I think we could do a lot worse than John McCain as President.

I feel pretty much the same way, I’ll probably hold my nose and vote McLame just because Obamma Lamma Ding Dong is just so bad.
But really, is this the best we can do?
