There'll be a party at my house when the "Chappaquiddick Kid" takes a dirt nap!

That might be construed as an honor.
My hope is to find out about the event years after the fact, to be dismissed as totally inconsequential.

I became a fan of Jesse Helms when I moved to Raleigh as an NCSU freshman at which time he gave the evening commentary on WRAL-TV.

Thank you, Senator Helms, for all you have done for NC and our country. You are a true statesman in every sense of the word and we'll miss you. May God bless you and your family.

Jesse Was a damn good patriotic American.

You know a man is good when the left media hates him so much it gets their goat.

Rest in peace Jesse.

Madeleine Albright once said of Helms, he “was the kindest, most infuriating, politest, most aggravating and nicest politician I had to deal with in the United States Senate.”

That observation, coming from a liberal, is a wonderful illustration of what it means to be a gentleman while standing firmly for one’s beliefs. One could hardly aspire to anything higher in public discourse.

Perhaps in some cases. But the point is that the driveby media had that drivel up as soon as the news broke. And they would never eulogize a democrap in such a passive-agressive accusatory manner.

I totally agree.
That's why I believe that the only meaningful response to it should by --- who else?

Captain Obvious!

Some conservatives lament that we don’t have a hundred stalwarts like Helms in congress. I don’t believe it takes a hundred. I believe if we had even one with the outspoken courage of Jesse Helms, it may not turn everything around, but it would surely inspire others to speak out.

We desperately need the sort of leadership that Jesse Helms gave us. I think the country would be amazed at how many would rally around him.

I appreciate very much North Carolinians for consistently supporting him through the years. North Carolinians have ever reason to be proud.

I’m with you.

I don’t like the pandering either and being forced to accept that we know is not true and to hear McCain say that was his worst moment.

geez.

When I heard this the first thoughtthat came to my mind was wow and he died on the 4th of July. Sometimes things happen like when Jefferson and Adams both died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. When things like this happens you just think that a high power is pulling a few strings shall we say. When you have a 30 year career in the Senate your bound to make a few enemies and Helms did. You can only hope that you make the right enemies and Helms absolutely did. People have said today that Helms played a great role in reviving the Reagan 1976 campaign because NC was Reagan’s first primary victory when his advisors were suggesting that he get out. May he rest in peace.

Albright and Helms did become friends although he never yielded an inch in his conservative principles and she remained, and remains, a liberal. Senator Helms was able to keep the personal and political separate, something that's not easy to do (I struggle with it myself).

That's why he was a gentleman worthy of admiration and emulation.

WRAL has had segments about Senator Helms running on their website all day - and on their evening news.

Best one seen so far is Senator Helm’speech about deciding to not run for his sixth term in the Senate - in 2001 (I believe).

http://www.wral.com/news/local/video/3155829/

Senator Helms’ staff was THE BEST ever! They demonstrated what EVERY government employee should do when dealing with the issues brought to them by the citizens whose hard earned tax dollars pay their salaries.

Senator Helms credits “these young people” who would work through the night and on weekends in order to meet the inquiries / needs of citizens who sought help from his office.. Jesse loved those young people - all of them - and spoke so highly of those who came to work in the “
Senator Helms’ family”....giving THEM credit for making him such an effective servant of his beloved North Carolina citizens - ALL citizens.

Then, Senator Helms thanked all those who worked for, supported, prayed for, and voted for him in each election. He said he knew apart from those prayers, there was no way he would have had the privilege to serve in the Senate all those terms.

Shall we who claim to be believers not follow this great man’s humble admission of his dependence on the prayers of many for his poliitical victories - shall we not honor his life and death by recommitting ourselves to pray for and work for those who might be able to come in and serve our nation = hopefully in NC - but also in other national elections - state elections - etc.

Jesse Helms is in the presence of His Lord Jesus Christ - and is free indeed! Praise God for Jesse Helms’ life!

One of the best senators I've ever had the privilige to meet. He was a real nice old school gentleman, and an even better senator.

We could use someone in the senate with even 1/2 of the foreign policy expertise that Senator Helms had. He was right on NAFTA. He was right on GATT. He was right on China. He was right on communism. We need that voice on the right and it was never replaced when Senator Helms retired.

My first senatorial vote was for Senator Helms, cast in Fetzer Gym at the UNC campus. I think mine was one of nine votes he received...

Sen. Helms will be surely missed. In my mind he was the last great principled Conservative Senator. You always knew *exactly* where Sen. Helms stood on an issue, whether you agreed with him or not. He loved his fellow North Carolinians, and he loved the men and women of the military (and their families!).

Between Helms, Heston, and Buckley, this year has been pretty rough. Three of my heroes gone in six months.
