When they weren't breaking the law or going in and out of jail, the Jersey Boys who went on to become the Four Seasons were hanging out on street corners singing with cigarettes dangling from their mouths.
Not in Chicago. Here, lead singer Frankie Valli, song-writing sensation Bob Gaudio and the boys have gone cold turkey
Following an apparent complaint from an irate theatergoer, the Chicago theatrical production of "Jersey Boys" has snuffed out cigarettes...

You know, I think these bans are awful even though I don’t smoke, BUT IMHO if you pass a law like this then it is for everyone not just the folks in resturants and bars! I say “NO” to allowing artistic freedom here because I’m sure 99% of them were all for it when it was someone else who had to comply!
I’d agree if it was everyone in the theater smoking. This is censorship pure and simple. What if they outlawed racial slurs in public and the play was about racists?
I went to a play in San Francisco a couple of years ago where the actors just held unlit cigarettes and pretended to smoke them.
I wonder if they would be allowed to sing “Smoke Gets in
Your Eyes” or”These Foolish Things” on the stage in Chicago?
Even references to smoking are a no-no,but sex, violence, and getting drunk on stage are okay.
The world has gone stark, raving, mad !
I agree the law, if enforced at all, ought to be enforced for everyone. What boggles my mind is that someone in the audience would get so worked up that they would run out to find a cop in the middle of a show.
(I wonder if it was Al Gore?)
Interesting idea. Not being a smoker myself, I’d much prefer to pretend to smoke than actually smoke while on stage - especially if I was doing hundreds of shows a year.
Not anymore, in America.
Apart from parts of the American South, it’s an absolute no-no almost anywhere.
Kenya(!), of all places just passed a smoking ban, but exempted bars etc. So they preserved some sanity.
Tyranny of the idiotic minority.
As near as I can tell - actors, in any gender configuration, may copulate on stage - but not smoke a cigarette afterwards.
That makes sense /s
It was stark raving mad 50 years ago to listen to a castrati like valli. Good Lord! :)
You should see the hysterics that result when I walk through a grocery store holding an unlit cigarette.
It's For The Children.
The Soviet style airbrushing of history continues.
