Why I'm Betting On Barack Obama's Victory
The New Republic ^ | July 10, 2008 | Bernard-Henri Lévy

Posted on 07/11/2008 5:33:29 PM PDT by Cincinna

There are unknowns, of course.

The persona of John McCain is already in play and it would be wrong to underestimate him. The man is remarkable, surprising in his opposition to torture and Guantanamo, audacious when he challenged the economic policies of the two Bush administrations. And isn't it said that Democrat John Kerry considered for a time asking this unconventional conservative to share the ticket with him?

Then there is also the American art of "junk politics," especially as practiced by the Republicans, and its unpredictable, often devastating effects. When will the below-the-belt stuff begin? On what Internet site will the first photomontages appear of Barack Obama tricked up as a radical Islamist? How many other pastors à la Jeremiah Wright will we see paraded out by "527s," groups on the fringes of the principal parties that are allowed, without bearing any moral or financial responsibility, to launch all kinds of slanderous campaigns?

Bernard-Henri Lévy, or "BHL" as he is known in France, believes that a road trip around America qualifies him as an expert on American Politics and Culture.

He is a Puffy-shirt unbuttoned down to the belly button wearing effete, elitist, self proclaimed "philosopher". A remnant from the 60's, a soixante-huitard who never grew up.

FWIW, BHL is full of it:

Truth is a total defense against against "slander". Jeremiah Wright is fair game for 527s and anyone else who speaks the truth about Obama.

Bernard Henri Levy overlooks the fact America has always been different from Europe. We just do things differently and that upsets foreign sophisticates like him to no end. I wouldn't be so quick to pronounce Obama a shoo-in. The latest Newsweek poll this month shows the presidential race a dead heat. With all the advantages Democrats enjoy, Obama should have kept his double digit lead of last month. One has to ask why its vanished like snow in July. If America really was a center-left country, BHL would be right. He isn't about our politics.

As many as it takes.

No point in reding further. McCain is no conservative unconventional or otherwise.

***If this guy Levy wants to bet, the Intrade price is at $6.50. He could make money if he really is doing what he says he’s doing.

Of course, if Obama’s birth certificate is a forgery, that could affect the price.

Kind of like an Alexis de Tocqueville on estrogen?

McCain is no conservative. He's just a passable moderate. Foreigners shouldn't make him more than he is since he's no Ronald Reagan. Yet even a leftist like Obama has trouble beating him!

Whatever.

It's going to be interesting to see if the implosion of the American mortgage business - with which all easy-money whores have some ties -- is going to wear through his teflon between now and November.

Turn up the heat.

Hussein Obama didn’t come up out of that well in Iran, did he? Maybe that’s why they can’t find a legal birth certificate for him.

What I also find amusing is that Obmabi’s poll numbers have steadily declined while he enjoys almost total media saturation. He is, at best, a political one hit wonder (the same speech rehashed over and over and over...).

Especially practiced by Republicans? Excuse me?

Seems to me that the majority of the conspiracy wingnuts out there tend to have left-wing polluting every nook and cranny of their being.

MoveOn? George Soros' various front organizations? Public school teachers pushing Michael Moore's and Al Gore's propaganda films? CAIR? Thanks Cincinna.

I’ll take Alistair Cookes position on America as long as were reading European viewpoints.
