WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, on Monday rejected a call by U.S. President George W. Bush to lift a moratorium on offshore oil drilling.

Bush announced on Monday that he lifted the executive branch's restriction on offshore exploration, saying only Congress stood in the way of opening up America's untapped oil riches.

We all need to spread the truth! The oil companies had to lease the 68 million BEFORE THEY COULD EXPLORE FOR OIL!

And they're lucky to be successful 15% of the time!

I think we're in enough of an energy crisis where the states should disregard the federal government and drill anyway.

On this issue, at the end of the day congress is just a group of idiots whose power is protected by the document that they detest and destroy at every opportunity.

If a state wants to drill, they should start drilling. If the feds cut off highway funds as punishment, the state keeps the tax dollars generated from drilling the oil.

Bush needs to finally get out of the shell he’s been in for 7 years, take off the gloves and hold a press conference every day and harp, harp harp on the inaction of the dems on drilling.

Blame the dems for the high price of oil and name, names. And get his surrogates out there on every Sunday morning program.

I'm watching a congressional debate right now and Joe Barton just said that of the 68 million acres only 10% has been deemed worth production and is being developed now. The rest has been deemed worthless or else the oil companies would already be hustling to get it at $145 a barrel.

Now we know who the real culprits are in us having to pay $4 / gallon for gas: The Bush administration with it's executive ban on drilling, and Congress with it's congressional ban on drilling, not to mention their respective bans on WORKABLE PRACTICAL alternative forms of energy, such as nuclear.

Will Obama be any different? I doubt it. Will McCain be any different? I doubt it.

There isn't the slightest doubt that, being unable to win a vote on the extension of the OCS drilling ban, right in front of the election, Bela and Dingy will concoct -- whip up out of thin air if need be -- a means of ''passing'' the renewal of the ban without a vote. Remember O'Neill conducting the fastest voice ''vote'' in the entire record of the House 30 years ago? Something along those lines, no doubt.

Nevada actually has it worse. 75% of their revenue depends on tourism and if people can’t afford to get there then they go bust.

Then, people should boycott Nevada and let's see what Harry Reid thinks about that!

Heck, I'm for drilling in my backyard, literally, if I had a clue there is oil there! I just don't get why some people are so against it since most of them use more oil & gas products than many of us combined.

How could they choose the ‘drill the acres you have leases for’ mantra without realizing that the Oil Company execs had already smacked them down with Maxine Waters’s threat to ‘take over the opil industry’.

And can you imagine what would happen if Maxine and Harry were running oil exploration in this country after they nationalized the oil companies ? They would force themselves to drill on all those low producing acres before they ever contemplated drilling on the known oil rich acres. These clueless twits would produce a net operating loss for the US treasury, while operating what once was the most profitable industry in US history.

A Rasmussen poll taken on Wednesday (July 9th) found that 62 percent of a nationwide sample believes that drilling should be allowed off the shores of California, Florida and other states.

Land off America’s coastlines contains an estimated 18 billion barrels of oil and roughly 77 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to the Department of Energy.

Rep. Israel (D-Huntington) met with Pelosi yesterday to plot a strategy to fight Bush. “The president is shockingly misinformed,” Israel said.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) is breaking with House leadership (in favor of drilling).
