Australian man spent 487 pounds a week on beer

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian man convicted of his seventh drink-driving charge was spending about A$1,000 (487 pounds) a week on beer -- enough to buy more than 2,500 small bottles a month, a newspaper said on Tuesday.

The heartbroken construction worker began drowning his sorrows after breaking up with his partner five years ago, the Northern Territory News said, quoting his defence lawyer as telling a court in Australia's remote, tropical north.

The magistrate declined to jail the father of four, Michael Leary, noting he had quit drinking since his latest arrest, but he banned Leary from buying or even holding a beer for 12 months.

The magistrate also poked fun at Leary's favourite beer, Melbourne Bitter, in a part of the country where drinkers can be as loyal to beer brands as they are to football teams.

Maybe for every beer he actually drank, he spilt one and gave another away?

When I was in the Marines, my roommate and I actually bet each other that we couldn't drink one beer per hour for the entire weekend. It's harder than you think, even for hard-drinking Marines. We stacked a few cases of beer in our room and started 6PM Friday night. We cracked open a new beer every hour on the hour. During the night, we'd set our alarm to go off every hour and we'd guzzle a brew and go back to sleep.

By 2AM Sunday morning, we both had had enough and we made a mutual agreement to stop and call it a tie. It was like a month before I could touch another beer again.

Sounds a bit like a couple of camping trips I took back in my younger years. Well, we did stop to sleep, but I distinctly remember having beer with my breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Good times, from what I remember.

Thanks, Marine!

...some poor Bloke supporting the beer industry in his beloved country...

Singlehandedly supporting the beer industry. That's significant!

No, you don’t remember it. Someone may have told you you did it but you damn sure don’t remember.I think you were face down in the floor.
Believe me I know. After the Navy I was a case or a fifth a day many for a few years. I only remember the beginnings of the days. Not what happended during the days or how they ended.

Back in about 1961 or 62, I was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. In my squadron, we could check out our liberty cards at 1200 and had to have them back at the CQ’s desk by 2100. My buddy and I decided to “shoot for qualification” one day. We checked out our passes and broke for the main gate. Ed, maybe 22 years old and of average height/weight. I was 19, “husky.” By the time we were able to catch a jeepney back to “Checkpoint Charlie” (as the main gate was known then), Ed had consumed 27 bottles of San Miguel, and I had downed 24. It was a while before either of us could touch another beer.

Saw a sign outside a bar: “The liver is evil & must be destroyed!”

Obviously an ad for Happy Hour. Wonder if this guy had been there.

Usually my legs didn’t give out until I was home. It was a delayed reaction.

I once (or did I do this twice?) spend a week on an island in lake erie where they had a winery. I remember drinking until 2 or 3 every night, then getting up early, 9ish) and start drinking again...for about 5 days in a row. The crazy and scary thing about that vacation was that by the third day, it actually felt normal.

Ahhh, Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island. Whole 'lotta drinkin' going on there over the years.

IIRC, the outside deck collapsed a year or two ago with tragic results. I no longer live in the area, so I don't know the authenticity of that story.

I will be at Put-in-Bay for a wedding in a few weeks. I will try to find out more about the winery. It was a known party spot for Lake Erie boaters for years.
