President Bush met with President Blaise Compaore of Burkina Faso, a small country located in western Africa. The two leaders are united against the corrupt “government” of Zimbabwe. (Transcript)

President Bush: We deeply care about the plight of the citizens of Zimbabwe. And we hope there's a peaceful resolution soon. I told the President, in the meantime our government is looking at, you know, sanctions beyond that which would have been levied out of the U.N. Security Council.*

* Last week Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-sponsored Security Council resolution that would have imposed an arms embargo on Zimbabwe and sanctioned President Robert Mugabe and his top advisers for rigging the country's presidential elections. (Source)

On a much lighter note, President & Mrs. Bush welcomed Little Leaguers from all over the country to the White House this afternoon for the All-Star Tee Ball Game on the South Lawn. (Transcript)

President Bush: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this historic occasion … We've got 50 players from 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, who have come to show off their great baseball skills. And we're excited you're here. We welcome you, we welcome your families.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and JCOS Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen held a news conference today at the Pentagon.

Afterwards, Secretary Gates welcomed Czech Defense Minister Vlasta Parkanova and Australia’s Defense Minister Joel Fitzgibbon to the Pentagon.

Quote of the Day:

President Bush: We're going to recite the Little League Oath.

Are the players ready? All right, here we go. "I trust in God. I love my country. And I will respect its laws. I will play fair, and strive to win. But win or lose, I will always do my best."

Play ball! (Applause.)

President George W. Bush listens to a statement by Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore during a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, on July 16, 2008.

President Bush: Mr. President, thank you for coming. I first started my conversation with the President by complimenting him on his leadership in the United Nations and in the region. You've been a constructive force for peace and stability.

And we talked about Zimbabwe. I made my position abundantly clear that, one, we are disappointed with the veto of the U.N. Security Council resolution, for which both our nations worked in concert. Secondly, we deeply care about the plight of the citizens of Zimbabwe. And we hope there's a peaceful resolution soon. I told the President, in the meantime our government is looking at, you know, sanctions beyond that which would have been levied out of the U.N. Security Council.

Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore speaks with US President George W. Bush during a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, on July 16, 2008.

President Compaore: (As translated.) First of all, the President and I seized this opportunity to meet, and the first thing I did was to show gratitude to President Bush for the engagement of the United States in favor of our country, Burkina Faso, and especially in terms of poverty reduction and economic development and all the help.

But I said to the President, other than Burkina Faso, all the continent of Africa is very grateful to the initiatives taken by the United States administration in terms of debt reduction, public aid to development, fight against HIV/AIDS, and building schools in our country.

Hi.

Thanks.

I just read that Nunn and Byah if that is the way his name is spelled are on the vp list or might be. Is that good or bad for McCain? The only thing I know is that Nunn is from GA and Byah is from IN.

I had to run some errands this afternoon and had planned to do some shopping but I got to feeling so awful in the heat that I just came home. I got very dizzy while I was out. I did not even attempt to go to choir practice.

BUSH HOSTS T-BALL GAME, THEN MLB PLAYERS AT DINNER
By Deb Riechmann

WASHINGTON - This year is the 100th anniversary of baseball’s unofficial anthem, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” but if you’re President Bush, it’s just as easy to bring the game to the White House.

Bush presided over a Tee Ball game on the South Lawn, then hosted a social dinner Wednesday in honor of Major League Baseball for about 240 players, members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, baseball officials and fans, administration officials and lawmakers.

MUST READ . . .

JUDGING (PRESIDENT) BUSH
By Bruce Walker

It is common these days, among Republicans (DrDeb: only some of the Republican ‘elites’; the rank and file still love and respect our President) as much as among Democrats, to follow the public opinion polls and judge President Bush as a grand failure. Is he? I have a different opinion than the public, and here are my reasons.

Bush is a good man
We take this so much for granted, but it is because of President Bush that we do. The eight years before Bush we did not take goodness in a president for granted at all. Clinton was a draft dodger who “loathed the military” and who lied about his deferment. Bush served in the National Guard honorably and his father served his nation with the highest honor possible in the Pacific.

BUSH’S PERSONAL AIDE RETURNS AT TOP
By Mike Allen
Wed Jul 16, 10:34 AM ET

Blake L. Gottesman, 28, formerly President Bush’s personal aide (DrDeb: and Jenna’s ex-boyfriend), is returning to succeed deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin, the White House announced Wednesday.

It is apparently the last senior staff announcement for this White House, since no more high-level departures are expected.

Gottesman, a Texan and longtime family friend, is the youngest person ever named to President Bush’s senior staff.

His title will be assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff.

LMAO! You know me too well. He really should keep the hat on. It de-emphasizes his pointy Vulcan-like ears that I never noticed until today and that are sort of freaking me out.

But not freaking me out as much as this, potentially the most terrifying non-Clinton photo ever on FR...

Did I ever tell you that I have an unnatural fear of mascots and people in big costumes?

But is the mascot really required for this? LOL!

Maybe I am just high-strung, but I'd be a little upset if I could have received my ball from the President of the United State or a BB Hall of Famer, but instead got it from a giant woodchuck or whatever that thing is (sometimes I express fear as anger LOL).

The more I look at this photo, the more I think Dugout has plans for global domination :)

Yep. He really shouldn't be that close to the President.

Our AHL hockey team is the Chicago Wolves and they have the most terrifying mascot ever.

(That's from their website, I don't know that little boy, but he's a cutie)
