...I then added that Pomerania had been historically disputed in all sort of wars, but that now, as the rest of Europe, was finally at peace. Instinctively realizing that this latter observation was the perfect leader of a thread for a nice political conversation, I quickly added that such current status of peace in Europe, and, relatively, in most of the world, was the result of America having become the most powerful nation on Earth ever.

Bedazzled by my assertion, more in sheer disbelief than in amazement, he bluntly asked me why it was so.

I rapidly quipped that wise nations embrace effective democracy--that is, democratic elections and subsequent effective-democracy form of governance--for their internal matters, and peaceful relations with other nations, due to overwhelming respect for, and overpowering fear of America’s overall might, as the greatest and most benign superpower on Earth ever she is. Pax Americana, I told Dave, is the name of the phenomenon.

For example, I told Dave, it is mainly due to Pax Americana that Europeans finally ended the murderous interstate and inter-nation warfare that until WWII they had been engaged into for millennia, since the beginning of recorded history, for that matter.

An Edwardian Englishman said, “Wogs begin at Calais.”
A fin-de-siecle Frenchman said,”Africa begins at the Pyrenees.”
A contemporary Spaniard replied, “Asia begins at the Pyrenees.”
An American said, “I hate abroad.”
They were all right.
