Texas Turns Aside Pressure on Execution of 5 Mexicans
New York Times ^ | July 18, 2008 | James C, McKinley, Jr.

Posted on 07/18/2008 6:08:12 AM PDT by Zakeet

Despite pleas from the White House and the State Department, as well as an international court order to review their cases, Texas will execute five Mexicans on death row, a spokeswoman for the governor said Thursday. The first of the executions — that of José Ernesto Medellín, 33, convicted in the 1993 rape and murder of two teenage girls here — is scheduled for Aug. 5.

The decision by Gov. Rick Perry to allow the executions is the latest twist in a long-running battle between Mexico, which has no death penalty, and the United States over the fate of 51 Mexicans facing capital punishment in several states, including 14 in Texas. On Wednesday, the International Court of Justice at The Hague ordered a review of five of the Texas cases after Mexico complained that the convicts, all men, had not been allowed a chance to talk to a Mexican consul after their arrests, as required under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

But that argument holds little sway in Texas, a place with a long history of upholding the death penalty and of telling other governments to mind their own business.

Mr. Medellín [was] one of six young men that a jury found had raped and strangled Elizabeth Peña, 16, and Jennifer Ertman, 15, in a park one night.

Mr. Medellín was 18 at the time and had lived most of his life in Texas; he signed a confession in English.

For relatives of the murdered girls, questions about international relations seem irrelevant.

“This has nothing to do with the World Court; it has nothing to do with the U.N.,” said Jennifer’s father, Randy Ertman. “This has everything to do with what Mexico wants, not what Texas wants. The people of Texas want the death penalty.”

“Maybe we will see the day when a state like Texas tells the Federal socialists to go screw themselves again and finally frees its citizens from the marxist policies, taxes and fees of the federal government.”

Um, last time I checked, Bush had liberated 50 million people, wiped out 3/4 of the known Al Qaeda...

Over all the whining of the wimps in Congress, he just got the wiretapping law he wanted in place...he has protected this country as he was sworn to do.

Your buddy Bill Clinton was offered Bin Laden 3 times and didnt have the fortitude to take him out.

As I understand it, Mexico's complaint centers on the fact that the perps were not allowed to discuss their arrest with the Mexican Consulate.
Solution: Invite the Mexican Consul to the execution. Problem solved.

Randy Ertman, father of Jennifer, a 14-year-old girl Medellin raped and murdered, criticized the World Court for attempting to intervene.

“The world court doesn’t mean diddly,” he said. “This business belongs in the State of Texas. The people of the State of Texas support the execution. We thank them. The rest of them can go to hell.”

Adolfo Peña, father of Elizabeth, a 16-year-old girl Medellin also raped and murdered, concurred with Ertman.

“I believe we’ve been through all the red tape we can go through,” he told the Houston Chronicle. “It’s time to rock and roll.”

God Blessed Texas, By ‘Little Texas’

I’ve seen a lot of places
I’ve been around the world
I’ve seen some pretty faces
Been with some beautiful girls
But after all I’ve witnessed one thing still amazes me
Just like a miracle you have to see to believe

‘Cause God blessed Texas with His own hand
Brought down angels from the promised land
Gave ‘em a place where they could dance
If you wanna see heaven brother here’s your chance
I’ve been sent to spread the message
God blessed Texas

First He lit sunshine
Then He made the waters deep
Then He gave us moonlight
For all the world to see
Well everybody knows that the Lord works in mysterious ways
He took a rest then on the very next day

God blessed Texas with His own hand
Brought down angels from the promised land
Gave ‘em a place where they could dance
If you wanna see heaven brother here’s your chance
I’ve been sent to spread the message
God blessed Texas

I still remember reading about this case when it happened. After gang-raping them, the killers strangled the girls with their shoelaces and stomped on their throats to kill them. I remember one gang member described in detail what everybody did, so they have these guys dead to rights.

Lethal injection is way to good for them. For cases like these, I wish they'd bring back public impalement. I would have no trouble eating popcorn and drinking a coke as I watched them slide down their impaling poles.

Besides the facts in Post #42, then Gov. Bush was very strong on the death penalty and withstood several attempts to be coerced by Mexico on other cases. No one is 100% but Pres. Bush has done some might honorable things.

>>>Why do you like to talk trash about Texans who visit Colorado? <<<

I've got to laugh at any Coloradan that doesn't like Texas visitors.

I attended summer schools at the U of Colorado from 1955 to 1960 - not because I needed the credits, but because all the Texas coeds would come to the Univ of Colorado for the summer.....and they wanted to party. Our fraternity house rented out to Texas girls in the summer....and I worked in the kitchen.

Ahhhhh...fond memories!

If my daughter was brutalized, as were these young ladies, I would be tempted to personally deliver my feelings to these persons sitting on these bodies, protesting these executions.

A person that wantonly takes a life has forfeited the right to exist amongst the peaceful. The horror these young ladies had inflicted upon them is unspeakable and no mercy is deserved by those that inflicted this horror.

Sorry lady, no pity for your pig of a decendant. ITs shameful he has lived 15 years longer than his victim to begin with.

I know you love your family, but he gave up his right to live the night he decided raping and murdering two teen girls was a good decision.

Mexico, the world court and the UN can go pound sand. We so need to just leave the UN and boot them out of the US.

Let these third world ninnies keep playing adult somewhere else, while we actually take care of business and clean up their messes... like always.

Um protecting this country you say? And just how many cells are now operating within the states just waiting for the right time to strike because of the continued porous borders?

How many thousands of Americans continue to be raped, assaulted, maimed, murdered etc from all the illegal refuse coming across the porous borders? And now Bush wants to let go these pieces of human excrement from the punishment they richly deserve and for what?

It's obvious to me that Bush cares more about the rights of Mexicans than the security of Americans, it's just a matter of time before all hell breaks loose and you know it, then let's see how you feel about your beloved Mr. Bush.

If the Mexican government wants to be sure that Mexicans in the US have access to their consulate then the Mexican government needs to be sure their citizens are here legally. Otherwise how can they claim the protection of a foreign government?

I’m a FReeper from Houston. I’m keeping an eye on:

Austin Perry, on Texas Death Row, Offender #999410

Pleaded guilty, and was convicted for kidnapping and murder of a 9-year neighborhood child, David Kazmous. Austin received the death penalty. In fact, in his sentencing phase, this POS said he wanted to be moved up to the head of the line and be executed as soon as possible.

Date of Offense: August 1992. He is STILL sitting on death row. No date of execution has been set.

You might ask “how can this be?”

I’ll tell you. His execution was scheduled and THEN our government allowed a group from Amnesty International to visit him and talked him into appealing his trial. And our screwed up justice system is set up to protect the perps, rather than protecting the innocent. Note the open borders which resulted in the murder of these two girls in the original article.

I burn up whenever I think of our little David. Our neighborhood will NEVER be the same. Not that it matters, but the statistics show this murderer to be WHITE. He is not. He is Mexican. His victim, David, was Lebonanese and he was the sweetest child you’d ever want to know.

When will this trash, Perry Austin, be taken out?
