A German magazine quoted Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as saying that he backed a proposal by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months. Nuri al-Maliki told Der Spiegel that he favors a "limited" tenure for coalition troops in Iraq.
Nuri al-Maliki told Der Spiegel that he favors a "limited" tenure for coalition troops in Iraq.
"U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months," he said in an interview with Der Spiegel that was released Saturday.
"That, we think, would be the right time frame for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes," he said.
But a spokesman for al-Maliki said his remarks "were misunderstood, mistranslated and not conveyed accurately."
Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the possibility of troop withdrawal was based on the continuance of security improvements, echoing statements that the White House made Friday after a meeting between al-Maliki and U.S. President Bush.

I sent the info to Drudge, clearly Drudge doesn’t want to report this news.
I have been more than disappointed in Drudge of late, he appears to be in the tank for Obama and has been reluctant to report several news items that are valid.
He hurts himself with a large segment of the population by taking sides, but I guess he doesn’t really care about that.
Guess I stick with Free Republic if I want truly cutting edge updates. To hell with Matt Drudge.
Sounds like just another media spin!!
ping
The worldwide media is determined to undercut our national security. They hate that we are the strongest nation on earth and that without us they are nothing.
I guess the Obamasiah will be in Iraq soon; it will give Maliki a chance to correct the record in front of Obama; that would work just fine.
Shame on Drudge, shame on the poodles in the media.
Presumably the news will be withheld until after the Sunday talk shows tomorrow morning!
Good rule of thumb here...
Trust nothing that you read in Der Spiegel about the US or our friends.

Hey rats don’t you get it ... Drawing down troop strength in Iraq means the Surge worked... You cannot say you were in support of the surge because you werent so your plans to draw down the troops in 06 would have been a catatrophe and therefore makes you idiots...
Drudge finally put it up on his site; not as the headline (still the big pic of Maliki and big headlines that he embraces Obama’s plan) but up higher and in red.
I sent it to him twice, plus last time I told him he was losing credibilitly because he is spinning and not reporting. I’m sure my input didn’t make a hill of beans, but it sure made me feel better.
Matt Drudge is such a big disappointment this time around.
I can’t believe the guy is an Obama lover. I don’t visit his site anymore.
Larry Elder is so right about these so-called ‘journalists.’ They really are ‘wannabe opinionmakers-spinners’. Very few are legit journalists.
I don’t think any of them tell the truth. It’s like reporting in arrears. You read something and have to wait to see if it happens.
I wonder if Matt sees a decrease in traffic on his site lately...the endless Obamamercial sure keeps me away.
Drudge seems to revel in headlines that harm the administration.
Further, I noticed that all the news this evening spun the lie for Obama, ignoring the comments by Maliki.
Well who would’ve ever guessed Der Spiegel would mistranslate? DUH!
LOL!
