Why would they just be left at the beach, why werent they taken away is the real question. I wonder how long it took the authorities to show up. This being Italy, I imagine it took a little while. But what were people supposed to do, abandon the entire beach?

Naples - The town of crap.

According to The Guardian, Italy is reportedly plagued by anti-Gypsy sentiments. This sounds like folks took a look at the feet (the rest was covered up), decided they were Gypsies, and THEN decided to not do anything.
Or else the paper is trying to cry racism just for fun, or out of habit.
They wouldn't do that, would they?

Perhaps the other beach goers saw the drowning unfold and didn’t really care.

No one likes gypies. They are dirt to most people. We're talking about two recently killed human beings here!

Do you mean like...
humans are just evolved animals, and after they’re dead, there’s nothing to follow but rotting of the body
vs
humans are the crowning glory of the creation of God, made in His image, for the purpose of His glory, and have eternal existance?
If I’m not mistaken, these two competing belief systems would lead to differing attitudes toward the lives of these two girls.

I think this is the case of someone taking some photographs and then someone making up a story around them.

If they offed themselves in a creative and imaginative manner, we would be laughing about Darwin Awards.
Check the photo of the two sitting on the beach. The lady has her hand over her mouth. It doesn't look like they are having a good time. They are just sitting there. No one is dancing and there's no volley ball game going on with the two bodies used as boundary markers.
By the way, you lost the discussion with the hitler remark.

I agree that it looks like someone took a picture and made up a story to go around it. It doesn’t look like the people in that picture are having great fun. Perhaps they were staying there to watch over the bodies until the authorities came. I can’t see the woman’s face, but the man looks deep in thought.

You are right. Your response did sound CALLOUS and unbecoming of a freeper and a conservative.

I don't see anything disrespectful about the sunbaithers remainging where they were
This does look like more than a few meters away too. It looks like there's 20 to 30 feet between the baithers and the bodies.
The photo appears to have been taken with a mid-range lense, which makes the bodies and the baithers look closer than they actually are.
This is unprofessional reporting IMO. It seeks to cause a rift based on essentially nothing at all.
This is the type of thing that causes civil disturbances, while the reporter goes off on their merry little way, oblivious,
or worse yet, to get awards for covering the carnage.

I haven’t looked at any other pictures but this one doesn’t show callousness, they could just as easily be pondering about the sadness of the deaths for all we know.

I dunno - I can be a pretty cold sort of guy at times, and I’ve seen a dead body or two in my life, but I think I’d be profoundly disturbed at that sight. Yeah, I’d leave. Others’ mileages may vary.

We? Speak for yourself, tough guy.

She doesn’t have her hand over her mouth, as if in shock. She has her chin resting on her palm in a bored manner.
The callousness shown is being equaled by the response to death on many of our FR threads as of late.

How terribly, terribly sad that they couldn’t be saved.
As for the uproar about this picture, it’s nothing. These two people are apparently the closest ones and they’re far enough away.
From the headline one would think it was like Coney Island crowded except with two under the blankets instead of on them.

Actually, those people might be several hundred feet away. Telephoto lenses create a major optical illusion by compressing depth.
