Costa Rican artiste Guillermo Habacuc Vargas is making headlines for tying a dog from the street in an art gallery as part of an exhibit to starve it to death. The title of his exhibit "Eres Lo Que Lee" was written across the gallery in dry dog food. The food and a bowl of water were both out of the dog's reach. Eventually the animal died of starvation. The artist claimed the dog was sick and would have died anyways.
Now Vargas has been selected to represent Costa Rica in Visual Arts Biennel of Central Americas 2008. The organizers have invited him to repeat his installation.

What was spelled out in dry dog food was “You are what you read”, (rather than “you are what you eat”). I guess this fiend finds that clever/
Old article or not, this is disgusting, disgraceful, and clearly demonstrates the despicable level to which “art” has fallen.
Dogs, cats, bunnies, fish, etc., were put here for us to love and marvel at the majesty of our earth’s creatures and God’s creations. They are not cruel “performance art” objects.
I am appalled that people paid to see this and no one took any action to help the dog.
I think this roughly translates into "How we're going to get rid of you stupid old white people after we take the land".
I've never too been impressed with anything that comes from 3rd world countries that still have $hit running in the streets. This "artist" belongs there.
BTW - next time you're thinking of eating a Nestle's candy bar, check the back to see where it was made. (You'll probably put it down.)
What, exactly, is the purpose of this post if not to gross people out?
The art market has become quite separate from what was once considered art - i.e., making beautiful things.
The root of this was very effectively identified by Tom Wolfe, as the substitution of the “word” - the ideological or philosophical justification - of art vs the concrete reality. I highly recommend Wolfe’s “The Painted Word” to show how this happened. Part of the ideological justification of this new definition of “art” is to shock the bourgeoise, the universal enemy of all “artists”, in the leftist ideological universe. So shock is valued for its own sake.
Once this was accepted as the new aesthetic measure, it became the new standard in the art market, which has always been about status competition, where on one level rich art patrons compete with each other to seem knowledgable in the esoteric aesthetics, and who on the other level must have the latest/best/most advanced whatever to show up the others in their circle.
The sad part is that this status competition is using such a degenerate definition of “art”. We are way past the point where Lorenzo de Medici patronized Michelangelo to gain status over his rivals. Now we have Central American rich people patronizing some dingbat who starves dogs for the sake of their status games.

You’ll get your occasional wing nut. That repulses me, but I realize it’s part of the current civilization. It needn’t be the bell weather statement it has turned into though, having his extermination of the dog be heralded as fine art and him rewarded by a segment of society without a tinge of compassion.
Others have brought up PETA already. I too am repulsed by PETA. Here is an instance where they should be front and center. I don’t seen any mention. Obviously they didn’t step in to stop this vile act.
Now the guy needs a new dog for his next performance.
Judgment day comes for one and all. I hope this dog is brought back to life to watch this guy wither away.
