U.S. govt to propose rules to develop oil shale

The U.S. Interior Department said on Monday it will propose regulations on Tuesday to establish a commercial oil shale program that could result in up to 800 million barrels of recoverable oil on public lands in western United States.

The White House and many Republicans have called for a ban on oil shale drilling to be lifted to help alleviate record high oil prices.

Congress temporarily blocked oil shale development in the Midwest due to concerns from environmentalists that oil shale production consumes large amounts of water and power, both of which are scarce in the West.

Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., Rep. John Salazar, D-Manassa, and Rep. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, all support a moratorium that prohibits the BLM from using federal funds to finalize commercial oil shale regulations in the government’s 2008 fiscal year. That moratorium ends when the government’s fiscal year ends on Sept. 30, and all three Democrats are looking to keep the moratorium in place.

Democratic Sen. Ken Salazar last year inserted into a bill language that bars the federal government from issuing final rules for commercial oil-shale development. The language is meant to prevent the issuing of leases, which can be done once those regulations are complete.

The new description of a DemoRat is “BLOCKHEAD”

They BLOCK OIL EXPLORATION.

They BLOCK GAS EXPLORATION.

They BLOCK COAL POWER PLANTS

They BLOCK NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS.

They BLOCK “EVERYTHING” THAT PERTAINS TO VIABLE DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION.

They BLOCK OUT RATIONAL THINKING FROM LEADING ECONOMISTS, NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERTS, AND MAJORITY PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT DOMESTIC ENERGY UTILIZATION.

DemoRats are TRUE BLOCKHEADS”.

The trick here is to leave that jackass Salazar (and thus CO, also -- temporarily) completely out of the loop, start in on WY and UT.

When the spendthrift Ritter sees how much revenue WY and UT are taking in from shale-related production, Ritter will tell Salazar to STFU and get on board.

We have such idiots in this state. This could make America energy independent and they want to stop it cold.

If I had a left leaning brain, I might have a clue just what the above quote means. The BLM at present is prohibited from using federal funds to finalize commercial oil shale regulations. This sounds much like a tricky dick sort of thing that could prohibit oil shale work of any kind on Federal land, which in Western States is most of the land. I’ll bet some dems are laughing their rear ends off.

On the other hand environmental zealots are about the same population as GLBT folks and equally as obnoxious far in excess of their overall percentage of the population. Since we live in the cleanest most environmentally sound and conscious nation on the face of the earth, it amazes me that Congress bothers to listen to the noise from them. Time for me to stop with the amazement.

Uh, I thought that it was 800 BILLION barrels of oil. 800 million bbls. would only satisfy about 10 days of world oil demand.

How to destroy the Democrats in the Mountain States in one easy step?

Have the Republicans in the oil shale States propose State Trusts that would pay the citizens in those States royalties from the sale of the oil along the lines that occurs in Alaska. It's easy to oppose development, when it doesn't cost you a thing. But when it's going to take money out of your wallet, then it's another kettle of fish.

What`s their motive?

I think according to US geological surveys there are close to 2 TRILLION barrels of shale oil in the USA, more il than there is in Saudi Arabia.

Why is the radical left against US energy independence ?

You are right there are trillions of barrels of oil in oil shale in the U.S..Democrats have banned companies from using most of the oil shale in the U.S.. This amount of oil could power the U.S. for hundreds of years.

The Democrats/Marxists' motive is to destroy capitalism so they can institute socialism, and also to destroy the U.S. economy so that the people are poor and dependent on government. This is why Democrats made up the global warming lie and all the other "environmental pollution" lies.

The Democrats/Marxists' motive is to destroy capitalism so they can institute socialism, and also to destroy the U.S. economy so that the people are poor and dependent on government. This is why Democrats made up the global warming lie and all the other "environmental pollution" lies.

The key to energy independence for The U.S. is to use its 300 years of coal and convert that to oil through coal liquefaction. Also use nuclear power plants to power everything and use coal plants only for oil liquefaction ,and then use the trillion barrels of oil in oil shale which is now off limits as Democrats/Communists in Congress banned development of oil shale in the Western U.S.

The Republican bill, the Gas Price Reduction Act needs to be passed by Congress. It in part will lift the Democrat bans on 118 billion barrels of oil in the outer Continental Shelf and it will also lift the ban on a trillion barrels of oil in oil shale in the Western United States which no one knows about. Democrats of course will try to stop this bill. Please call Republican Mitch McConnell to thank him for pushing this bill and please send these links to everyone.

Mitch McConnell:' Just before the July 4th holiday, 44 Republicans introduced the Gas Price Reduction Act, a series of proposals to increase American energy production' .

"The 'Find More' provisions(in the bill) include increased exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf, where states want it, and lifting the ban on western oil shale exploration.

"We should also lift the ban on oil shale development which the new Democrat Congress enacted last year. Our western states are sitting on a sea of oil three times as large as the oil reserves in Saudi Arabia. Yet, at the insistence of the Democrat majority, we aren't allowed to touch it. They've put a 100 percent ban on oil shale exploration. With gas prices at more than $4 a gallon, this prohibition makes no sense.

U.S. Oil Shale Resources Are Three Times Larger Than the Current Oil Reserves in Saudi Arabia( 1 trillion barrels of oil). YET CONGRESS RECENTLY VOTED TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO DEVELOP U.S. OIL SHALE RESOURCES

Shell had to go to dangerous Middle East Country of Jordan to develop a much smaller by orders of magnitude amount of oil shale but Shell can't touch the trillion barrels of oil in our oil shale in our own back yard in Colorado, proof:

You are correct. Writing million instead of billion is a reporting typo.

Correct. The same legal requirements are used to prevent many federal owned areas offshore and on land, in the lower 48 and in Alaska.

Correct.

The vast extent of U.S. oil shale resources, amounting to more than 2 trillion barrels, has been known for a century.

Oil Shale Activities

The 800 million is based on recoverable portion of just Green River formation.

...even a moderate estimate of 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil from oil shale in the Green River Formation is three times greater than the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia.

The US uses 20 million barrels a day, so this would last us about 40 days.

But hey, friends, that 40 days that we don’t have if we don’t go after the oil shale petro

But just the idea of taking proceeding to commence to begin will scare the willies out of the speculators and that alone will account for some drop in price. I hope the Demos have a ton of money in the hedge funds when the price starts to drop significantly
