Bears Trap Geologists In Russia

By Sky News

SkyNews - Tuesday, July 22 03:07 pm

At least 30 hungry bears have trapped a group of geologists at their remote survey site in Russia's far east after killing two of their co-workers last week.

The team of geologists on Russia's seismically active Kamchatka peninsula refused to leave their camp after the bears showed up, a spokesman for the region's emergency services ministry said.

He said: "In the interests of safety they didn't come out to work - the people are scared by the invasion of bears."

A bear killed two geologists at the worksite on July 18, officials said.

Authorities on Kamchatka, nine time zones east of Moscow on the Pacific Ocean, said this year was remarkable for either too many bears or not enough fish.

"Either way there is not enough food," the spokesman said.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodiak_bear

The largest bear ever killed in North America was from Kodiak Island with a total skull size of 30.75 in (78.1 cm), and 8 of the top 10 brown bears listed in the Boone and Crockett record book are from Kodiak. The average skull size of Kodiak bears that were killed by hunters in the first 5 years of the 21st century was 25.1 in (63.8 cm) for boars and 21.8 in (55.4 cm) for sows.

Size relative to other bear types

The Kodiak bear and the polar bear are the largest members of the bear family. Physically, Kodiak bears are similar to the Kamchatka Brown Bears of the Russian Far East, though tending to be lighter in colour and bigger.

Texas I would doubt it.

My parish priest travels out west every year and he was telling me about when he was visiting a national park, and the ranger asked him if he would come with him because a bear had killed two people.

He went with him and apparently the people were taking photos of the bear and its cub.

The ranger had to go and kill the bear,

He told my priest that the way to take down a brown bear was to shoot and take out its shoulder. The bear will then bleed out.

I will check on the details however. I think you can do a search on largest bear killed and get the photo and article.

LOL

That is why I need the bigger gun.

Last year some kin folk showed up for a bear hunt and the guide said exactly that. Gimme that .308 & 7mm mag. Here, take this .338. The berry eaten bears were yummy.

Thank you, granny.

Russian Bear ping. They’re always a threat, aren’t they. Um, that’s an intended double entendre.
