Romney: A Mistake for McCain
Real Clear Politics ^ | 07/23/3008 | Dick Morris

Posted on 07/23/2008 5:33:00 PM PDT by JRochelle

You've probably heard the story about the tycoon who wanted to bring out a new kind of dog food.

He spent lavishly. He hired the best marketing person, the top PR firm, the best ad agency, the No. 1 packaging expert, the most powerful distributor -- but the sales were flat after six months.

He summoned his consultants to a meeting and asked why the food wasn't selling. "The dogs won't eat it," was the answer that came back.

And so it is with Mitt Romney. Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries, the dogs won't eat it. He lost Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and California. The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states; and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals couldn't spare the cash to advertise. Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.

And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries. Using his gigantic money advantage to dominate television, he seized early leads in virtually all of the primary states, only to lose them later on. And, when they started slipping away, he resorted to unfair, distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges.

You clearly don't know the phony Romney as well as you think you do. He was for cap and trade. Makes good business sense he said. But then he flipped on that too! ---- In 2005, Mitt Romney Supported “Cap And Trade” System, Saying It Would “Stimulate A Sector Of The Economy And At The Same Time Not Kill Jobs … I’m Convinced It Is Good Business” In 2005, Romney Endorsed Regional Cap And Trade System, Saying “This Is A Great Thing For The Commonwealth … We Can Effectively Create Incentives To Help Stimulate A Sector Of The Economy And At The Same Time Not Kill Jobs. … I’m Convinced It Is Good Business.” “Governor Mitt Romney signaled his support yesterday for a regional agreement among Northeastern states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite opposition from power companies and other business interests that have been lobbying the administration against the plan. In opening remarks to a clean-energy conference in Boston, Romney said the first-of-its-kind agreement, under which Massachusetts and eight other states could be required to cut power plant emissions by 2020, will not hurt the economy, as some have charged. He argued that it would spur businesses to develop clean — and renewable-energy technology to market worldwide. ‘This is a great thing for the Commonwealth,’ Romney said, his strongest endorsement of the pact to date. ‘We can effectively create incentives to help stimulate a sector of the economy and at the same time not kill jobs.’ … Romney said yesterday that he had some concerns about the agreement, known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, but he endorsed this and other clean-energy initiatives by saying they would stimulate the development of technology that Massachusetts companies could sell to other states and countries, as the emphasis on climate change grows. ‘I’m convinced it is good business,’ Romney said.” (Scott Helman, “Romney Favors Pact By States On Emissions,” The Boston Globe, 11/8/05) · “Central To [Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Supported By Romney] Is The Implementation Of A Multi-State Cap-And-Trade Program With A Market-Based Emissions Trading System.” “The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI, is a cooperative effort by Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states to reduce carbon dioxide emissions — a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. Climate change is expected to raise sea level, change precipitation and impact other local climate conditions. Changing regional climate could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. It could also affect human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems. To address this important environmental issue, the RGGI participating states will be developing a regional strategy for controlling e missions. This strategy will more effectively control greenhouse gases, which are not bound by state or national borders. Central to this initiative is the implementation of a multi-state cap-and-trade program with a market-based emissions trading system.” (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Website, www.rggi.org , 1/28/0 8) Romney: “Now Is The Time To Take Action Toward Climate Protection … Our Joint Work To Create A Flexible Market-Based Regional Cap And Trade System Could Serve As An Effective Approach To Meeting These Goals.” “I concur that climate change is beginning to affect our natural resources and that now is the time to take action toward climate protection. … I share your interest in ensuring that the economic and security contributions made by our electricity generating system are not negated by the impact of emissions from that system on the health of our citizens. … Our joint work to create a flexible market-based regional cap and trade system could serve as an effective approach to meeting these goals.” (Shaun Sutner, “Romney Joins Bid To Curb Em issions,” Telegram & Gazette [Worcester, MA], 8/6/03) On Same Day In 2005, Romney Supported, Then Opposed Northeast Regional Compact On Climate Change Romney Initially Called Northeast Regional Compact To Address Greenhouse Gas Emissions “Good Business,” Then Retracted His Support. “A group of Northeast states has postponed the announcement of a landmark agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants after Governor Mitt Romney raised objections to the pact late last week, two government sources familiar with the agreement said yesterday. … News of the delay comes two weeks after Romney indicated his overall support for the initiative at a conference in Boston, calling it ‘good business’ because it would prompt Massachusetts companies to develop state-of-the-art clean-energy technology.” (Beth Daley and Scott Helman, “Romney Doubts Seen Delaying Emissions Pact,” The Boston Globe, 11/22/05)

What utter nonsense.

The Real conservatives were partially voting for Hillary in Operation Chaos.

Poor, poor, little whining Romney.

Ever the victim [NOT].

Why don't you pray for Romney's REAL victims like the Maucks?

Paragraphs are our friends.

There is something about excellence and competence that makes people jealous. Mitt is clearly a winner and has been all his life. Perfect score on his SAT, a couple of quarters at Stanford before going to France for 30 months on his Mormon mission [which is why he speaks fluent French], returned to BYU where he graduated as valdictorian, received both a law degree cum laude and an MBA from Harvard finishing in the top 5% of his business school class.

He was a successful businessman and has a net worth between $250 million and $500 million. He became Rep governor of the most Dem state in the country. He was CEO of the Winter Olympics doing an outstanding job contributing $1 million to the Olympics, and donating the $825,000 salary he earned as President and CEO to charity. He is a solid family man with five sons and 11 grandchildren.

It is really pathetic to think that we have candidates like McCain and Obama who couldn't hold a candle to Romney's achievements inside and outside government. He is clearly the most qualified of all and the most capable. Sick isn't it?

Why would I care if we have open primaries? LOL
I like open primaries. I voted for Obama in my state to try to offset Operation Chaos. Hillary would be leading McCain by 15 points if she were the nominee! At least McCain has a chance against Barak.

Most of the people who voted are Repulican. The indenpendents didn’t outnumber the R’s.

Silly logic. Romeny would have won if it weren’t for McCain or Huckabee. But that is all water under the bridge. MC and Huck have just as much of a right to run as Romney.

Mitt is a winner. In everything except his presidential aspirations. Good for him! Let him go back to making lots of money!

Lots of money, nice family, good grades, well that just isn't enough to convince people that he was a conservative. You see, in order for conservatives to accept him as one of them, he needs to have a record! As his Campaign Powerpoint said, the candidate wasn't where the voters were so he would have to move to them. Well that theory didn't work.

What?

So, you like open primaries where liberals can have a substantive say in who OUR nominee will be? In other words, they can/did run an operation chaos on us, & you think that's o.k.? BTW, McCain got the majority of the Dem vote, not Romney.

I think it's fine if the Dems have open primaries. If they're stupid enough to allow us to have a say, then let's have at it. What's embarrassing, is that the Republican establishment in some states were stupid enough to do likewise.

A rather liberal mindset don't you think?

So, you feel that Real conservatives were willing to let us end up w/ a RINO as the nominee, just so they could vote for Hillary in Operation Chaos? Do you fully realize just how ridiculous that sounds? Would conservatives really be that stupid? Wait a minute, don’t answer that, I don’t want to know what your answer is.

BTW, Operation Chaos didn’t really kick in until after Romney was out if memory serves me correctly.

“Is there a single thread where you cultists do not demean
the presumptive GOP candidate with your poisonous comments?
and your threats to vote for Obama?”

I’ve never threatened to vote for Obama, and would never do so.

McCain has richly earned whatever criticism might be directed his way. In politics, maverick seems to be mostly just a nice synonym for backstabber.

Real McCain supporters would seem to have a great deal in common with cultists, considering the divisive and damaging swath he has cut through the Republican party.

>> John Thune did not destroy Bolten’s career. <<

FACT #1: John Thune, who got elected by campaigning against "obstructionism", stood in the way of Bolton's UN nomination and announced he would vote AGAINST Bolton's nomination and "play every card I can get". He announced his opposition to Bolton at a time where Bolton was under fire from organized liberal special interests groups and needed the unified support of Republican Senator he could get.

FACT #2: Because of a small handful of Republican defections (with Thune being the ONLY defector in the Senate who opposed Bolton due to pork reasons rather than idealogical disagreements with him), Bush didn't have the votes to confirm Bolton at this critical time (thanks "true conservative" Thune!), and was forced to RECESS APPOINT Bolton as UN Ambassador.

FACT #3: After Bolton was recess appointed, Dems jumped on the opportunity to portray Bolton as an illegitimate official who did not have the backing of the U.S. government, and his standing at the UN never recovered. He did some excellent work at the UN for several months but when the appointment expired and he came up for a full Senate vote, he submitted his resignation rather than submit to a full Senate confirmation that he couldn't win.

FACT #4: Thune was barely elected to his Senate seat by the skin of his teeth and wouldn't have beaten Daschle without the help of conservatives across the nation pouring money and volunteers into his small rural state. The "true conservative" thanked them by becoming a bigger porker than Daschle, endorsing the "maverick" McCain in the primary before the guy had ever become the "frontrunner", and doing the very thing he blasted Daschle for: using his small state's "clout" in the Senate to relentlessly obstruct Bush from advancing a great conservative cause (namely UN Reform).

Thune may vote with us 90% of the time, but he's proven himself an untrustworthy weasel who stabbed conservatives in the back during one of the major battles of the Bush presidency. If he's willing to use Bolton as a human shield, who else is he willing to use as a human shield in the name of pork? He also brings absolutely nothing to the ticket as he is from an ultra-safe GOP state with three electoral votes and no leadership experience.

Tuck Fhune.

>> Facts are difficult things for cultists, right? <<

Indeed they are, especially since the anti-Huckabee freepers kept insisting that Huck's huge groundwell of support in the early primaries was all "media generated" and that the "liberal media is carrying the water for Huck trying to generate a buzz for him"

They also claimed Democrats loved Huck, which is particarly odd since every Dem forum I ever looked at had nothing but contempt for "that homophobic hate monger Huckster who wants women pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen", though they did look favorably at Ron Paul.

“Perhaps you missed the post from which this thread originated?”

No, I didn’t miss it at all. I’m just still trying to figure out whether Condi or Hillary is winning so far.

Consider Dick Morris a reliable source if you care to. Actually, at one time or another, he’s probably predicted and said just about everything that could have been said or predicted about this year’s campaigns. Still, he’s one of the last places I’d look information.

And, most of those horrible ads Romney ran just presented things that were totally true: such as McCain/Kennedy amnesty and other McCain truths that went against so many in the party. Talk about whining because the ads hit the mark.

Believe Morris if you choose.

There’s a real pathology among some of the Romney haters here and elsewhere.

I am a conservative and I haven’t heard of this ‘wonderboy’. So unless he is an incredible unknown that will take the world by storm (I listened to him and he’s not very impressive) then the vast numbers of independents out there who will decide the election haven’t heard of him either. If I’m not impressed I’m sure they won’t either. This “preaching to the choir” stuff of yours reveals you either don’t know or don’t care about Politics Rule #1 - it takes a majority of electoral votes (or votes) to win. Therefore having someone of national stature will help get McCain elected. This nobody you pointed out is a Quayle - looks good on paper for conservatives but doesn’t help him much. AMF

I don’t think there is another serious suggestion. Surely he won’t pick Graham...that would be a disaster

I'm with you. Romney would be least of evils so far. I used to like Graham til he imploded. Unfortunately McCain has this indepedent streak and might consider Graham. Let's hope not.

Mass, the first gay state in the nation? Home of Ted Kennedy? Tip O'Neil? Dukakis?

And you blame the fact that Mitt was governor there, try to steer it to the right, for Republicans not being able to get elected there? Are you serious?

"Mass, the first gay state in the nation?"

THAT is because of Myth Romney throwing the Massachusetts
Constitution 'under the bus' (along with the voters, the Romney-Dictator way).

BTW in this picture, who is it that gives Sen. Kennedy HillaryCARE=RomneyCARE on a platter (without a vote, the Romney-Dictator way)?

Why it is liberal, panderer, DNC-controlled, Mitt Romney,
a traitor to conservatives and the GOP, laughing away (picture worth thousands of words, is it not?)

"Your ignorance about politics is breathtaking."

More projections from a Precious Willard bootlicker.

"To blame Romney for the decline of the Rep party in Massachusetts is nonsense."

I blamed him for killing it.

"I guess Romney has also caused the decline in RI."

Nope. The 1935 Democrat Revolution led by Theodore Francis Green was responsible for that (I'll bet you don't know who that is).

"The demographics of this country are changing significantly."

What does that have to do with Slick Willard's incompetence ?

"The non-Hispanic white male is the principal power base of the Rep party. That percentage of the population is declining and its impact will be felt more and more in the future. Today, half of the children in the US under 5 are minorities. Immigration, our main source of population growth brings in 1.2 million legal immigrants and another 500,000 to 1 million illegals. 87% of all incoming immigrants are classified by the USG as minorities entitled to use such programs as affirmative action and minority set asides for business. We may have very well seen the high point of the Rep party during the period in 1995-2006. Demography is destiny."

Again, what does that have to do with Slick Willard's incompetence ?

"Yeah Romney is sort of like Churchill's description of democracy, i.e., "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

Again, what does that have to do with Slick Willard's incompetence ?

"Romney is the most qualified and capable candidate of either party who ran for President in 2008. I would much rather have him as President than any of the others by a country mile."

In order, you insulted me -- a political historian -- on my knowledge. #2, ignored Slick's record, #3, made a ludicrous comment about Rhode Island. #4, you went on a diatribe about demographics. #5, you indicted democracy, and #6, you posted a mindless shill for Slick Willard. At no point did you make a case for your boy, but you sure do like diverting attention away from his record and making irrelevent diatribes.
