I have been in sackloth and ashes ever since the end of the Republican primary season dwelling on the mess we find ourselves in. Conservatives have watched the Republican nomination process get hijacked from them while they were debating whether our candidate should be socially conservative (Huckabee) vs economically conservative (Romney). Now we have McCain, who has historically proven to be mediocre at best on both sets of issues. His only strength was his view on the Iraq war.
Now that we appear to have turned the corner in Iraq, the whole withdrawal argument may be moot. If things continue this way, McCain will be reducing troop levels and bringing the home if elected president. So what is his candidacy about? If the Iraq war is basically won before the election, what is it that will define his candidacy?
Here's another question - who is McCain's base? Who will work the phones? Who will go door to door during the 72 hour GOTV? Who will organize and fund the 527 groups that can take shots at Obama that he can't (or won't) take himself, ala the Swiftboat Vets? More simply asked - who is passionate about McCain's candidacy?
The answer, to me is, nobody. Sure, a lot of us conservatives and disaffected union democrats will vote for McCain as the lesser of 2 evils, but who will "turn out" the voters? Who will sacrifice time from work and money from their budgets to see that he gets elected?
If I am right, I think that President Barack Hussein Obama will be in office come January, killing our way of life with an overwhelming Democrat Congress. Does anyone have a better answer?

Norman, I am with you.
I am a conservative republican and have been since the day I could vote (1983). The fact of the matter is, we don’t always get the candidate we want — but, we have an “electible” candidate and that is the current issue.
I am as guilty as the a lot of conservatives for “letting the other guy,” worry about the issues while I was off attending to my kids after school events, standing watch while I was still on active duty, and generally speaking “assuming” that I had nothing to worry about and conservatism would always be around. I just needed to show up at the polling place and cast my ballot for the “R.”
I believed that American’s, true American Conservatives, the ones that go to church on Sunday, say grace at the dinner table, own guns, are opposed to higher taxes and abortion would always be out there fighting the fight.
Well, in the short time on FR I have discovered that I had been lulled to sleep.
I’m awake now, I still support John McCain 100% because the thought of obama just scares the liv’n s#@# out of me, I have a son on active duty now.
So, for the future, who is being groomed, who is being vetted — do we ever want to wait until two years before the next election to start pushing an electible candidate forward — the key word here is electible.
The fact of the matter is, the republican party has allowed the media to make being a republican conservative a dirty word. That has to change.
And economic conservatives.
We had been attacked on 9/11 and felt George Bush was the best leader to keep us safe in these perilous times. He has proven to do just that.
Those that blindly support Obama have no such foundation on which to base their support. They are taken with his ability to speak to large crowds and the fact that he would be our first Black president.

What a colossal failure of imagination. Stop living in the moment. Our time is coming. Be patient. Stop whining.
McCains base? All 12 of them are Freepers and they will call you all kinds of nasty things if you dare say a negative word about their weak candidate.
I was passionate about Duncan Hunter's candidacy to the point of contributing significant amount of sums to his campaign and worked in my community to garner more support for him. The only thing McCain will get from me is my vote come November, and he can thank B.H Obama for that much.
Ok so you are not passionate about McCain. Tell me you are at least considering voting for him.
At lunch out today, an acquaintance came to our table (someone who is politically sharp & very conservative) and I asked who he will vote for.
He grimaced, and said he would hold his nose and vote for McCain.

And now they expect us to 'bring in the vote'....to man the phones, to go door to door, to bring the passion to the polls....

I think ...no matter what...Obama IS the annointed one-(whether he's a minion of Satan or just a cunning little Maxist), and McCain is a faux foil.
Just the Hillary Clinton Supporters For John McCain site at http://www.hcsfjm.com has several hundred thousand members and millions of hits a month. It’s run by a farmer from Texas named Ed Hale. He has an Internet radio station that talks about Obama and all his gaffes, etc..
You and every other vanity that comes to surface. Buck up. McCain is doing the best he can, and is getting better. Our time to strike will be after the conventions. Want to get passionate watch the video “Pumped.” He is running a campaign if you bother to look. Read any number of his remarks or speeches in the last three weeks. He is NAILING Obama.
I’m not that thrilled with John McCain, but he isn’t a gun-grabbing, commie-kissing, tax-raising, terrorist-appeasing, baby-killing, queer-coddling socialist like his opponent. The choice seems clear.
I agree with you! When even the union president at Dh’s work is saying McCain ‘08 you know there is still hope! I truely believe that we will see vasts stretches of red on the map come November ‘08.
It’s been weeks since McCain mentioned cap and trade, Brownback has said McCain is coming around on stem cells, McCain said to La Raza’s face the border will be secured; he has also come out for more nukes, drilling, he moved to the right on taxes, he moved to the right on judges. Sounds like a lot of moving to the right. When will it please you? (I’m guessing never.)
Thank you for you vote. It will mean a lot. But if you are serious about beating Obama you will consider doing more than that.
Everyone needs to snap out of it. You win by acting like winners. And lose by acting like losers. So many around here are acting like losers, dragging their feet. And they are going to lose if they continue - you know why? Not because of Obama’s “immense support” - but because of THEMSELF. The whole time, it was them. They themselves were the key to winning in November. Whether that’s beating Obama or electing McCain - It’s YOU. YOUR CHOICE. HERE. NOW. What is it?
Get over it, and work to keep Obama out of the White House.
How can you be passionate about McCain and post as a conservative? I am not flaming you, but McCain is anti conservative. He has spent NO time talking to us.
I am kind of tired of all of us being nasty to each other, but, I am a person who really does not see any value in McCain.
I am not voting for Obama, by the way. But I am also not inclined to vote for a man who shares none of my beliefs.
I do not want the US to be one with Mexico or Canada. I want to elect a leader who has a love for US citzens first.
Neither candidate shows any desire to pander to us. I am really tired of it. All of this crap will not get me to the polls come election day.
