Who is McCain's Base? (Vanity)
Vanity | 7/27/2008 | Wasted Potential

Posted on 07/27/2008 1:53:14 PM PDT by wastedpotential

I have been in sackloth and ashes ever since the end of the Republican primary season dwelling on the mess we find ourselves in. Conservatives have watched the Republican nomination process get hijacked from them while they were debating whether our candidate should be socially conservative (Huckabee) vs economically conservative (Romney). Now we have McCain, who has historically proven to be mediocre at best on both sets of issues. His only strength was his view on the Iraq war.

Now that we appear to have turned the corner in Iraq, the whole withdrawal argument may be moot. If things continue this way, McCain will be reducing troop levels and bringing the home if elected president. So what is his candidacy about? If the Iraq war is basically won before the election, what is it that will define his candidacy?

Here's another question - who is McCain's base? Who will work the phones? Who will go door to door during the 72 hour GOTV? Who will organize and fund the 527 groups that can take shots at Obama that he can't (or won't) take himself, ala the Swiftboat Vets? More simply asked - who is passionate about McCain's candidacy?

The answer, to me is, nobody. Sure, a lot of us conservatives and disaffected union democrats will vote for McCain as the lesser of 2 evils, but who will "turn out" the voters? Who will sacrifice time from work and money from their budgets to see that he gets elected?

If I am right, I think that President Barack Hussein Obama will be in office come January, killing our way of life with an overwhelming Democrat Congress. Does anyone have a better answer?

“killing our way of life with an overwhelming Democrat Congress.”

Only if you decide not to renounce your citizenship and move out of the USA.

He moved to the right on all of those issues. But I promise you you’ll get no such concession from Obama.

I admire your optimism and enthusiasm and find it very difficult to disagree with your assessment of the conservatives' conundrum at hand. However, I was struck by your use of the word "passionate." I would rather say I will not vote for McCain because I feel it's the passionate thing to do. Rather, I see as the responsible thing to do.

I do not hold to the hand-wringing pessimism displayed by a few here on FR. That being said, I feel, as many do here, we do not have a solidly conservative candidate to really get behind in this election. To be honest, I feel we have been retrogressing since Ronaldus Magnus. The conservative base is not "fired up" by the GOP candidate...it is only motivated by the fear of an Obama presidency.

A curious blend of country club republicans, be they RINOs or moderates, you pick the label. Many dems who cannot vote for she must not be named. Globalists and New World order types. Lastly, the thankful illegals who partake of government largess.

Sure, get off your ass and help McCain beat Obama. McCain has already moved in the right direction on many issues, Obama will never move right. In fact, what you are getting now is Manchurian nonsense. He's a lying Marist.

McCain isn't. Helping a lying Marixist ascend to the Presidency is nothing to be proud of, that's for damn sure.

And lose by acting like losers. So many around here are acting like losers, dragging their feet. And they are going to lose if they continue - you know why?

That's like saying I should root for the Texas Rangers to beat the Yankees. Neither of which I care for.

My team - the conservatives - are out of the pennant race. They barely field a team anymore.

That’s a fair analysis. We have held the White House for 8 years now. I’d imagine even if Reagan were running he wouldn’t have the enthusiasm of a post-Carter presidency with post-Bush. The intelligent recognize however that the latter is just as important as it prevents the Carters and Obamas from ever getting hold.

One more reason. Hell, if no other: Don’t let those stinking DUmmies be laughing at us on election night!! They will be laughing at you, me, Eaker, all of us - they don’t care about our petty division - they are a point of derision to them. We are in this together whether we realize it or not at least through a common enemy.

It’s the American League versus the National League. Pick your side.

Very telling comment. Some of us don't act like mindless cheerleaders, rooting for "our team" to win. We look at objective standards and determine who matches up the best. And that isn't necessarily a major party candidate.

Juan has no “base”. The Republican Party gave up it’s “base” when they nominated Dole.

You want fear mongering? If McCain wins we won’t have a Constitution by 2020. Better?

Bates, don’t rattle my cage. I’m not voting for McCain. I’m a conservative.

“The whole time, it was them. They themselves were the key to winning in November. Whether that’s beating Obama or electing McCain - It’s YOU.”

This is the point of my post. I can’t find it in myself to do more for McCain than vote for him. There is too much in his past that makes me distrust him. My fear of Obama is enough to keep me from voting for Barr, but I can’t get “pumped” to vote for him. You can’ manufacture that - it has to be genuine.

Sorry about the link. Try this one for Real Clear Politics. Go to the tab at the top labeled “Sat” and you will find the article by Susan Estrich, “Arrogance Won’t Win The Election.”

No it's not. I don't root for a league just like I don't root for a party. Anyone who does is no better than the folks at KOS. They root for the party.
