Sen. McCain holds private meeting with Archbishop Chaput" Scant little details:
Senator John McCain is paying his second visit to Colorado in less than a week and on this trip he is taking time to meet privately with Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver.
At 9:30 on Wednesday morning, John McCain and his wife Cindy met with Denvers Archbishop Charles Chaput. The archbishop described the meeting as private and told CNA that no comment would be forthcoming. (CNA)
Off the top of my head, Abp. Chaput has been an active supporter of immigrants' rights (where he would find common ground with McCain), and also Abp. Chaput has a forthcoming book on Catholic faith and voting (which Inside Catholic mentioned will be published "well in time for November's election").
Most to the point, I think, with Abp. Burke out of the country, Abp. Chaput is the most notable bishop who "strongly implied in 2004 that voting for a pro-choice candidate was a serious sin" (this blogger's words, not mine). Abp. Chaput has, for instance, called out the group "Roman Catholics for Obama '08" and demanded they ask Obama to "become pro-life, instead of overlooking his support for abortion in favor of other issues of concern to Catholics" (derivative source: CNA).
More than a throwaway meeting, this sit down of McCain and Abp. Chaput.
possible VP slot?
Bishop Chaput is AWESOME! This is interesting news indeed....
You think they’ll discuss embryonic stem cell research?
LOL. That is the current obsession isn’t it.
That’s against canon law and would be a terrible idea even if it weren’t.
We can trust him to put forth better nominees than either Obama or Hillary would, that's for sure...
I don’t think that Chaput is especially notable for his position on immigrant rights. Just about all the bishops support that.
But he is notable as a strong supporter of orthodoxy in the Church, willing to stand up for what is right. And he has been notable in speaking truth to power.
Will Chaput explain to John what he must do to get a larger percentage of the catholic vote, since he will likely already get the Catholic vote?
Catholics are pretty evenly split.
In the 2006 election, Catholics voted democrat 55 to 45.
In the 2004 election, Catholics went 52 to 47 for President Bush.
There’s no such thing as “the” Catholic vote.
McCain will get the votes of Catholic pro-lifers. Obama will get the votes of tens of millions of pro-abortion Catholic morons.
Chaput is greatly respected by traditional Catholics, and those are the Catholics who have moved over to the Republican party over the past several decades.
Maybe he can persuade McCain that he is mistaken to support government funding of fetal stem cell research, which undermines support for McCain among pro-lifers and which has been far less promising than adult stem cell research. Why should taxpapers pay billions of dollars for useless research that would not be done if it weren’t subsidized?
I’ll pray for that!
Moves like this are likely explains Ridge's recent rise at Intrade to 15%.
You obviously don't live in Chaput's Archdiocese.
Wrong. You're confusing Chaput with Archbishop Raymond Burke. Chaput has no control or say over what happens in St. Louis.
That is so sad. Can you imagine what our Congress would look like if self-professed Christians voted for those who stood for Christian values? It's staggering.
