It would be hypocrisy for Bush NOT to attend. He and his father (as well as Bubba) have pushed China onto the world such that the rest of us have to live with it. I don’t know what the Bush’s find so wonderful about China and Mexico that they prefer them to their own country (allegedly the US), but they have hosed the rest of the world as a result.

But many here will support pro-China relations because theres a free market, donch know?

And that trumps everything to these people, even American citizens and soldiers slaughtered.

Even though they have killed more American citizens post WWII than any other country. Either coming over the hills in Korea, or aiding, supplying and supporting the NVA in Vietnam. 1980’s communism is an evil empire, 2000’s communism is good for business.

As another poster pointed out, some make profits off Red China, and little else matters.

Profits, regardless of consequences is all that matters.

***I’ll leave it to Dubya to decide if he goes or not. I’m behind him either way.***

No matter what Dubya does, there are people here who take advantage of ANY opportunity to trash him. If he stayed home from the Olympics, some of the same people would dream up a reason to attack him.

Just remember this Dragon has teeth and will use them given the chance. They have made it clear that they want too be a superpower, heck they are.
Such a beautiful country wasted. Until we stop worrying about offending them and start doing to them what Reagan did to the U.S.S.R. then they will grow bolder.
If it is within our means to help the persecuted and we do not, then we will answer for it.
All this mealy-mouthing and cow-towing(sic) will achieve nothing. It shows weakness not diplomacy. When are certain leaders going to learn that some countries i.e China..Cuba..Russia..Mid-East (pick one) do not want to change. Reagan set the example just freaking follow it! Use sharp words and mean it! Show these guys there is no capitulation to their ways.
So i say instead of polishing the Dragon’s teeth lets sharpen our Eagle’s claws!
For those that do not believe China to be a world threat then do your research. They are everywhere and not vacationing!

If he hadn't stopped there right after celebrating Israel's 50th birthday party, they might have given him some fanfare. Maybe even made it look like an Obama event :)
If I recall, they didn't increase production until a few weeks after his visit.

The Chinese are the ones who stole our latest nuclear warhead designs and traded for our latest ballistic missile guidance technology and MIRV technology. They are also the only ones developing an offensive blue water naval capability with nuclear submarines, super sonic missiles and aircraft carriers. In comparison Iran and N. Korea have rubber rafts and pop bottle rockets.

Carter, be it remembered, pulled the U.S. out of the Russian Olympics - and who suffered? The American athletes, many who had trained and dreamed a lifetime...and who would not get another chance.

I remember Bush saying, some time ago, that he didn't want to see our athletes punished -

But that aspect is being ignored.

Yeah, Carter was the better man - s/
oh dear, I just made myself sick...

If the world wanted to protest China, it should never have allowed them to host the 2008 games.

"the world" doesn't have anything to do with which country does or does not host the Olympic games.

Unfortunately, “the people of the world” aren’t in charge of where the games are held. The socialist, bribe-accepting, corrupt Olympic Committee chooses where the games are held, and it’s pretty much open to the highest bidder.

Well now, the President should snub the Olympics. China doesn't own the Olympics, it is the site and sponsor. The Olympics originally were to be non-political (until Jimmy Carter pulled the US team out of Moscow) and for amateur athletes, (until the US forced a change to allow professionals). It was an instrument to promote world peace through international sports. I have attended two and know first hand that as far as Olympic village is concerned, that ideal is fostered well.

I would say when the American public is ready to stop purchasing Chinese goods, and we find some way to buy back all the American economy that China owns, then maybe we should ask the President to stay away - but not before.

Bears repeating.

All Carter accomplished was hurting our athletes who missed out on what they had trained and dreamed of all their lives. I maintain he had NO RIGHT to do that.

All they have to do is call our debt and crash our computer networks. This is 21st century warfare.

If they call our debt they will crash the dollar. If the dollar crashes what happens to China's economy? China is a serious military threat but the economic threat is overblown.
