A wolf pack of at least 30 thugs viciously attacked two hero ex-Marines in Brooklyn after they rescued a teenage girl who was being assaulted, police and witnesses said yesterday. And when the brother of one of the former servicemen tried to come to his rescue during the July 25 melee in Coney Island, he was beaten into a coma. The former leathernecks, Valentyn Olenyev, 23, and Boris Bukler, 22, Russian émigrés who served tours in Iraq, were walking a female friend to her parked car on West 23rd Street at 12:30 a.m. when they spotted two men holding the screaming teen by her hands and legs. "She was yelling, 'Help!' "..."It wasn't our intention to get into a fight," said Bukler. "We said, 'Let the girl go, and we'll leave.' We told them, 'Stop.' "She was screaming, and all we did was look to help her. I got a bottle smashed over my head, and after that, I started fighting. But I got beat down. "I was getting my ass kicked by 50 people." Their friend called Olenyev's brother, Ivan, 22. "When I showed up, there were a lot of people there, people on the left and people on the right, and then - 'Boom!' - I got hit and passed out,"...Police sources said he was pounded senseless by 240-pound Timothy Dixon, 23, who was swinging a metal baseball bat. Ivan suffered multiple facial fractures and will require plastic surgery. The NYPD is looking for Dixon, who remains at large....The two former Marines, meanwhile, insist that the violence had racial overtones, although the assault has not been labeled a bias crime. Bukler said, "Those in the crowd were yelling, 'Hey, white boys, you're in the 'hood now!' We were yelling back, 'We don't care - we live here!'

Here’s the jist of it
I have known many Marines on my 20 years of service, many barfights, had my nose broken in Yokuska, broke one or two. I have grabbed a rifle from a Marine during a security alert(Please do not do this, it REALLY hurts) called them grunts, jarheads, and too many too many I can’t post here.
When overseas, if you need help ALWAYS look for the American Flag. Marines are there.

I wouldn’t read too much into what I wrote. The Marines of yesteryear were a tough lot, it is true, but tough can only take you so far.
The Marines of today are highly skilled, technically proficient, and very expensive to train. This is why they are discouraged from risks as small as tattoos, because they are too valuable to waste on just being tough.
And while those civilians richly deserve having seven bells kicked out of them, and a group of Marines could no doubt do it, they are worth too much to do it.
Now granted, if you could assemble a platoon of no longer active duty Marines to invite to the party, they would no longer be under the obligation to be fit enough for their specialty. And they would no longer be under the UCMJ, as well.
And the end result would be just as effective as it was in the good old days. Attitudes would be adjusted. Respect would be reestablished. And vengeance would be accomplished. Laudable goals.
very, very well said dub. people say it’s a “jungle out there”, well it is far worse imho. violence for fun by these monsters is sop. it is coming to a head and something is going to flash off a real battle. the savages will not come out ahead in it either no matter how much crap they talk.
Oh it is much worse than that: We are not told the race of the "thugs," but are left to make our own inferences. Why?
