"Did you notice that Michael Phelps wears earphones and is listening music just before his every Olympic start, at Beijing's Olympiad Water Cube pool deck, be it finals or semifinals? I first noticed that before his first gold swim on August 10: Phelps removed earphones 2 minutes before the start, and he was the only swimmer who worn earphones at the pool deck. Intriguing scientific evidence testifies: Listening to music improves blood oxygen capacity and is a performance enhancement."
"So what? Can one call listening to music shortly before entering the swimming pool for competition a performance enhancement? Yes, say both Koelsch and Cherniak. If so, how long could this enhancement last? "Duration [of the effect is] not certain, from seconds to minutes," adds Koelsch. Beijing Olympic and world records by Phelps fall into the expert's projected time frame. Yes, testifies Dr. Vance Bergeron, of Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, Laboratoire de Physique in Lyon, France: "[M]usic next to the swimming pool, less than 2 minutes before the start could indicate performance enhancement because of transient increase of blood oxygen capacity.""
"Straightforward ruling results in a straightforward conclusion: Listening to music through earphones before the start is in line with other measures prohibited. Therefore, Phelps' Beijing swimming golds is faked and should go to others who battle for it fairly."

I would say this is a joke too but I saw what happened to the American girls in gymnastics yesterday.
The bagpipes are to annoy the troops enough to kill...
Watch a quarterback throw a touchdown. Headphones are your next shot. It’s par for the course and 25 years old.
Do you really know anything about swimming?
Nobody is stopping the other swimmers from listening to music. It’s not an unfair advantage.
What next? Ban anyone with size 14’s because feet like flippers give them an unfair advantage?
Okay... Scotty, beam me up. There’s no intelligent life on this planet.
Sour grapes.
He’s breaking his own records and he’s been coming onto the pool deck with headphones on for years. I noticed that a lot of swimmers did that in the last Olympics.
Don't bother. Anyone who could post the following...
"Ive always thought Olympic swimming medals were a bit cheap anyway due to the fact that they do the same distances using different strokes and call them seperate events"
has probably never been in a pool.
Same here. Why doesn't Track have the 100m Freestyle, 100m Backward Sprint, the 100m AllFours, and the 100m Bunny Hop?
They do it in swimming so white people can win something, too.
(Yes, I'm white as wonderbread)
Stupidest thing I ever heard.
Wow! Does that mean that all floor gymnastics metal winners have to give up their medals too?
This sounds like one of those crazily skewed to the left studies, of which the scientifically disingenuous are so fond.
Mt husband consumes 12,000 calories a day and has no gold medals.
Aerobic exercise is a performance enhancer -what’s his point?
If I consumed even close to that many calories, I'd look even more like a blimp!! LOL!
This one is totally absurd! Michael Phelps listening to his iPod is an illegal doping, oxygen uptake enhancement! PING!
“Don’t iPod in the pool...
I’m no expert at swimming, but I can do all the strokes, and I realize that each of them requires a special set of skills. However, we have seen Phelps win using a variety of strokes at a variety of distances. Obviously, they are not so different that one man cannot be world-class at all of them. As for runners, I have the same qualms about their achievments. I have nothing against Spitz, Phelps, or Carl Lewis, but how is it fair to Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and William Tell that they can be as exceptional as any other athelete without the possibility of winning eight golds in one olympics?
i suppose just breathing before your event should be banned?
He listens to hip-hop crap.
They are separte events except for the individual medly which incorporates all the strokes. These guys and gals train 5 hrs. a day just back and forth in the pool. I used to coach swimming and diving. My daughter was a diver. She would do a dive, get out of the pool and do another dive. She also trained in swimming. Back and forth, back and forth. Up and down, up and down three hours a day. Sometimes more.
During competition she would listen to music with earphones. It helped her concentration a kept her relaxed.
A few years ago a study was done and the results found that if a person listened to Mozart before an exam they had better test scores.
