Boy's parents sue to get his baby from mom, 21 (Under age boy; HE is ordered to pay child support!)
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | August 16, 2008 | Mary Beth Lane

Boy's parents sue to get his baby from mom, 21 Saturday, August 16, 2008 3:12 AM By Mary Beth Lane THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH LANCASTER, Ohio --- A Pickerington couple and their son are fighting for custody of a baby born to a Lancaster woman charged with having unlawful sex with the boy, who was 15 at the time of conception.

A paternity test shows that the teen is the father of the baby born April 7 to Jane C. Crane, who was 19 when she became pregnant. Now, a judge has ordered him to pay $50 a month in child support and set visitation at seven hours a week.

Crane, meanwhile, faces criminal charges. A Fairfield County grand jury indicted her last month on two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a fourth-degree felony. Conviction carries a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison and a requirement to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

Crane is living with the baby and her family in Lancaster.

The boy's parents say they can provide a better upbringing for the baby than Crane can. Her household includes her stepfather, David L. Jacobs, who was convicted of domestic violence last year for hitting, choking and pointing a gun at Crane's 17-year-old sister and was placed on two years' probation, court records show.

"We don't want to have our granddaughter abused by these people," the boy's father said. "We are trying to do the right thing.

"The child support was the icing on the cake. I couldn't believe that our son has to pay child support to his abuser."

The Dispatch does not identify victims of sexual abuse.

Crane is scheduled for a pretrial conference before Common Pleas Judge Richard E. Berens on Aug. 21. A hearing and a status conference in the custody dispute are scheduled for next month before Domestic Relations Judge Kathy S. Mowry.

Crane, now 21, is not a suitable custodial parent in part because she may have committed a felony by having sexual intercourse with a minor younger than 16, the boy's parents argue in court papers seeking custody.

Crane declined to comment. She is free on a $5,000 recognizance bond pending trial. Her attorney, Sandra Davis, did not return calls. Lawyer Jennifer Strunk, the court-appointed guardian ad litem representing the baby's interests, said through a spokesman that she could not comment.

That a 19-year-old woman had sex with a 15-year-old boy might seem like no big deal to some, but it is a serious charge, said Assistant Prosecutor Julia Dillon.

It makes no difference that it is an adult female charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor boy rather than the more common instance of an adult male charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor girl.

"It is an age and maturity issue, not a gender issue," Dillon said. "He's a young boy coming into his own, being taken advantage of by an adult."

There could yet be a plea agreement. "I have made what I consider to be a reasonable offer, but I have not received a response," she said.

The incident has had lasting affects on the boy, now 16, his mother said.

"He has nightmares, he is stressed out," she said. "He is a father, even though it was a crime for him to be a father. His life is changed forever."

Crane got to know the family while she worked at a local movie theater with the boy's older sister. When Crane said that her stepfather was abusive, his family allowed her to move in with them.

The boy's sister later bought her own home and Crane moved in with her. It was there last summer that Crane had sex with their son at least twice, his parents said.

“1. Buc complained that child support is essentially whatever women want to spend it on....due to his experience. Not only is that another of many slams he’s made against women in this thread, he’s hardly a victim here.”

1. But who are you to judge that he isn’t a victim? He said his wife cheated on him. She wanted the divorce. He didn’t. Now he has no say in his child’s life and he has to pay support OUTSIDE his household and he has no say in how it is spent. How is he NOT a victim here?

Tell me, seriously, if your husband cheated on you, divorced you against your will, and got complete custody of the kids and child support, would you feel like a victim? I bet you would. Who wouldn’t?

2) I don’t think Buc is complaining about women across the board, but he is complaining about bias towards women in our legal system. And he has a point. Women are favored in custody battles. Everyone knows this. Everyone. Also, his original point is absolutely sound: why should a 15 year old boy be paying any money to the woman who - according to the law - raped him?

“If he wants a say in how someone else runs their household, then he needs to find a way to be a part of it otherwise it’s none of his business.”

It’s his child too. He didn’t want the divorce. She did. You keep ignoring that fact. How can he “find a way to be a part of it” when his wife refused to allow him to do so? Remember, she wanted the divorce. He didn’t.

“2.Buc made several comments against women in this thread and like it or not, women are a part of this forum.”

Women are part of this forum. So is Buc. You made several completely unfair and unwarranted comments against Buc - attacking him personally - while he had not addressed any toward you until you attacked him. Why bother doing that? What good is going to be accomplished with that approach? Also, Buc certainly did not make any anti-women comments before you post in #36. If he did after that I didn’t see it.

“Poor arguments combined with inane generalizations about groups of people probably won’t bring you any peace. LOL”

Perhaps not, but attacking a man as if he was at fault when you know NOTHING first hand about the situation will be better? How so?

“3.If Buc isn’t able to handle the consequences of his poorly thought through opinions, then maybe someone could lend him a clue.”

Are you sure you have a clue to lend? 1) You clearly know nothing about Buc’s case so how can you act so presumptively about it? 2) You seem completely unfamiliar with the basic facts of how most custody cases go in court. 3) You seem completely unfamiliar with the fact that our family court system is dominated by left wing inspired feminist appraisals of men that severely limit the parental rights of fathers. 4) You apparently can’t even see how you’re acting. 5) Honey works better than what you’re shelling out doesn’t it? Don’t you think you would be more successful in getting your point across if you treated him like a decent person rather than mocking him as if his failed marriage was his fault (when you have no CLUE what happened!)?

I’m just saying...

Are you sure you have a clue to lend?

She never offered him one of her own clues.

She said then maybe someone could lend him a clue.

I'm sure if she had one of her own, she'd share...

Given the choice, I prefer blessed cluelessness...;-)

I wonder if any judge has ordered a rapist to pay child support for the child they conceive.

Yes they have.

The judge awards custody to the sex offender and the victim has to pay child support. Anything wrong here?

And you know there has been a hearing on custody because....? Or are you unaware of the practice that mothers of illegitimate children generally are the ones who take the children home after they are born?

"...a judge has ordered him to pay $50 a month in child support and set visitation at seven hours a week."

It's amazing how otherwise intelligent people can be so completely brainwashed by certain arbitrary social mores that the response is almost Pavlovian. Sad state of affairs if you ask me....

She had an affair at work, I did not want a divorce, she did, she got custody, and that's how it works out for millions of men in this country every year.

Yup, that's pretty much my story too...only in my case, I only had to pay child support for a few years because the bitch, I mean, my lovely ex wife, signed my name to adoption papers and legally changed the name on my daughters birth certificate. That's when she was six years old. I didn't see her again until she was 22, and we have a very strained relationship because of it.

Anyway, not trying to bash women here, but it sure does feel good to get that off my chest in public...

Man...sorry to hear about how it turned out with your daughter. Makes my situation look not bad by comparison.

Keep the faith.

I see you’re from MA. I grew up there. Needham High Grad, ‘81. I also lived in Natick, Framingham, Saugus and Springfield before I finally left in ‘91.

I graduated from Central Catholic in Lawrence (about the only good thing in that God forsaken city)and grew up in Methuen. My brother has finally had enough and he plans on moving to Maine the next few years. New Hampshire is just Massachusetts north so going there really doesn't solve much. I probably won't be far behind him. I'm pretty much fed up myself. I've got relatives in South Carolina so that's an option too.

Interestingly enough, repeal of the state income is up for a vote. It's a waste of time as far as I'm concerned because the state legislature will never abide by it. They'll do what they did the last time we voted to decrease the tax: have a closed door session and pass a law to subvert it. Besides, how does anybody think they're going to pay for the BIG DIG.

I paid child support for 15 years for 2 children. Less than a year after our divorce became final, I was informed that the man my dear wife had an affair with and later married was now my children's father and I could go to hell. That bastard died and she is now on her 5th husband.

I’m so sorry. I’m VERY sorry. I would never have done that to my ex, never, ever ever.
I hate it when women do that to their husbands. I don’t and can’t understand it.

“This boy got him self into this, now he has to pay for this”

Tell me, please, how the boy “got him self (sic) into this”.

A fifteen year old PERSON can’t sign a contract, can’t legally drive (on the highways), can’t buy cigarettes, can’t buy alcohol, can’t vote, can’t declare themselves emancipated, and can’t join the military.

The laws are in effect to protect minors who have not fully learned proper judgement.

Had the genders been reversed, would you feel the same way?

“and not blame the girl because she got pregnant.”

Not blaming the girl for getting pregnant. Blaming the WOMAN for having sex with a MINOR.

See the difference?

I finished paying child support about four years ago. My son lives with me now. Ironically, because I have a pretty common name, every couple of years the County of Los Angeles likes to try and garnish my wages for a woman I do not know and children I did not sire. All because of my name. Heck, I haven’t lived in California since 1984 and I’ve never lived south of Placer County. The burden of proof is for me to prove that I am who I say I am, and I have no legal recourse to sue the County for relief of this pattern of ongoing harassment.

Setting aside the fact that my ex was a sexual deviant who was not above incest and prostituition, and a drug addict, and who slunk out of town while I was deployed overseas; wherever would I get the idea that child support is a government-sponsored scam to punish men? Is accountablility too much to ask for? Why is it that she doesn’t get taxed on the income she receives from me, yet she gets to claim it as income for the purposes of getting credit?

No, she doesn’t. A couple of posters on this thread hold the female blameless for her sexual encounters. All that matters is that men must be punished.

There is a rather large number of good decent men that have been totally destroyed by evil women. The man can do nothing but bend over and take it. The laws do not protect them from this abuse. Something needs to change.

Well there are also a large number of women who have been destroyed by evil men! It doesn’t flow just one way, although you of course do have a difficult story.
I do believe that my story would make you shiver, it’s so bad.
So remember, there are evil people, not just evil women.

I knew you were going to jump on that. I know there are evil men who abuse women. We were discussing how the law aids and abets women in divorce courts.
