The night that changed McCain's life

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- It was September 1967, and Lt. Cmdr. John McCain was back from Vietnam on home leave. He invited Chuck Larson over for dinner, and during a late night game of bridge, McCain pulled his buddy from the U.S. Naval Academy and flight school aside. Larson recalls being stunned at what he heard.

"You know Chuck, I might have to get out of the Navy," McCain told him. "And I said, 'Why is that John?' and he said, 'Well I want to be a serious naval officer. And when I go places now, people tend to not take me seriously. They hear all the stories, they look at the early days and if they can't take me seriously, I don't know how I can perform.' And I said, 'John, you're going back.' "

A few weeks later, McCain reported for duty on the USS Oriskany and, as he did on his previous assignment on the USS Forrestal, began flying bombing missions over North Vietnam.

Considering it is CNN it's not too bad. They attempt to make a big deal out of the fact that he *might* have wanted to get out of the Military .. and there is a slight inference that he was not tortured ..

"This is not true, because our nation is civilized and humanitarian and you do not understand the Vietnamese nation," Duyet said. "We never beat anybody."

Uh huh .. sure .. like anyone will believe that. Overall, McCain comes out a hero in this piece.

They better be careful about trying to "Swift Boat" McCain. It's a grave mistake for the left to think they can marginalize what happened to McCain in Vietnam. About the time they think they have been successful in discrediting him .. he could go live and tell his story. There wouldn't be a dry eye in the house.

I just read this on CNN. I was surprised (pleasantly) of their story. I don’t think they are able to water down the truth much anyway but overall, it was a good read.

They better be careful about trying to "Swift Boat" McCain.

Swiftboating has come to be known as the truth, has it not? Let them knock themselves out.

Liberals are insane, as we all know. It was SO important that Kerry was in Vietnam but now that McCain is running, it won’t mean much at all.

Hoping that CNN is trying to separate itself from MSNBC.

any more than the fact that Bill Clinton was a draft dodger.

Swiftboating has always been about the truth. It’s only recently that the left have tried to change the meaning of swiftboating to means lies.

Won’t wash.

He sure sounds like a ‘crybaby’. (”Quit looking at me like that...I’m gonna tell mom!”) This is feul for the fodder he personally has created...since it was himself that decided that patriotic acts were beneath him.

1. Doesn’t salute the flag,
2. refuses to wear flag pin on his lapel,
3. shows a Marxist/Communist rebel as his hero,
4. has banners with the flag up-side down....etc.

If this is not a show of disrespect, then what is it?

I think I will faint. CNN had a positive story (sort of) about McCain?

"This is not true, because our nation is civilized and humanitarian and you do not understand the Vietnamese nation," Duyet said. "We never beat anybody."

Yeah, tell that to Lance Sijan's family. He was awarded the Medal of Honor after he died from beatings and lack of medical care.

The drive-by's are such POS's for printing this crap.

Disregard my earlier reply. I thought I was responding to Obama’s saying that McCain was making him look un-patriotic. Then after I posted, I realized it was on this thread...not sure how it got to this thread, when I hadn’t even read this article!!

They hear all the stories

To be truly informative the article would have to explain what McCain meant by "they hear all the stories". What stories?

The night that changed McCain's life

Perhaps only for a few days...

FREEPER CALL TO ACTION- Just say NO to Pro-Choice VP!.

It seems McCain may (I repeat "may") be considering his own destruction, only days after assuring America of his pro-life commitment. Are we going to sit by and let this happen, if true?

Ironic that the best complement came from one of his captors

” As for his prison days, Duyet said in his conversations with McCain, “He would never admit the United States made a mistake in the war. ... Therefore I say John McCain is an extremely conservative man. He was loyal to his ideology.”

“They attempt to make a big deal out of the fact that he *might* have wanted to get out of the Military”

Watch the MSM try to turn this into an act of treason; and Dan Rather will come up with the memo that proves it. (note lack of ‘sarc’ label)

" 'Would you like him to be president of the United States?' we asked Tranh."

" 'That depends on the U.S. people. I don't know,' Tranh said."

At least she didn't say answering the question was above her pay grade.
