Last week raised important questions about whether Barack Obama is strong enough to be president. On the domestic political front, he showed incredible weakness in dealing with the Clintons, while on foreign and defense questions, he betrayed a lack of strength and resolve in standing up to Russia’s invasion of Georgia.
This two-dimensional portrait of weakness underscores fears that Obama might, indeed, be a latter-day Jimmy Carter.
Consider first the domestic and political. Bill and Hillary Clinton have no leverage over Obama. Hillary can’t win the nomination. She doesn’t control any committees. If she or her supporters tried to disrupt the convention or demonstrate outside, she would pay a huge price among the party faithful.

Something I don’t understand about the conventions: why do the Democrats usually go first? You would think they’d learn not to give us the “last word.”

Reminds me of the candid talk accidentally caught on the mics when Bambi was talking to Gordon Brown. Obama said something to the effect, “We don’t have to know everything - that’s what advisors are for. We just have to make sound judgments.”A wannabe, actually explaining this to a leader.
Can you imagine McCain saying such a thing? McCain makes his own decisions, while Carter or Obama freeze and wait for advice.
In an interview with Carl Cameron today (June 9th, 2008), Sen. McCain introduced some new pushback to Sen. Obama’s assertion that the GOPer represents a Bush third term. The presumptive Republican nominee instead argues that the Illinois Democrat is promoting policies that would mean a second term for President Carter.

And yet, Hillary's supporters are *right now* engaged in a massive email campaign to disrupt Obama's nomination.
Fienstein has already dropped out rather than be part of the coup, but Democratic Party delegates and unelected super-delegates are going to be voting for Hillary at their Convention.

At least Carter and Dukaka were governors. At least they held some sort of executive power. Obama is not even in that category.
Has there ever been someone that has not held executive power of some sort before being elected? Mayor, General, Governor? I know there have been Senators and Reps, but they have been longstanding.
In my mind, the only one I can think of is Lincoln. And he ain’t no Lincoln.

The Dems are in danger of achieving Carterization and the convention hasn't even started yet. Obama has already been imitating "the malaise" speech. Like Carter he is depressed and ashamed of his country and tries to drag everyone else down into his bummer and downer. But Americans don't like being depressed about and ashamed of their country. They especially do not like condescending people trying to rub their noses in it.
He doesn't seem to grasp this as a weakness in his campaign and will keep doing it. He has a neurotic need to remind white Americans of the imperfections and moral failings of their country. There is an in-your-face quality to this kind of condescending liberalism. Liberal white guilt is finite, not infinite. And McCain is gaining momentum.
It's what Begala said about the Democrats not being able to win with eggheads. There just aren't enough eggheads. Arugula, inflating tires, and herbal wheatgrass colonics won't win this election.
Carter was a moron, but he had been a governor and had served his country.
Obama is a darker shade of Edwards. Both are populists w/o a resume. Both subsist on the cult of the masses to propel them forward. Both are smooth talking bubble heads.
The only difference I can see is Edwards donks the help.

They're going to have to do this in a way that Hillary has clean hands, or perhaps draft a dark horse. Although Hillary is a better impromptu speaker, she still has no executive experience (despite lots of wishful thinking otherwise) and huge negatives (a lot of people voted for the BHO empty suit rather than Hillary. Many would vote for anyone else rather than let a Clinton anywhere near the White House again.) Kinda makes we wonder if someone like Al Gore might emerge from Denver as the nominee ...
I think he’s on the money, only... the laugh will be on all of us, if he chooses her to be VP... In fact, I think the Clintons have more on him than they’re leading on...and she may very well end up on the ticket...

My thoughts exactly. When Obama made the “above my pay grade” comment, I immediately thought of Dukakis looking like a doofus in the Army tank.
He’s got some kind of head—it really is an odd shape. Something about him doesn’t look quite right. I’m not one of the ones that thinks he is handsome.
Don’t forget the fill up your tires comment. That definitely reminds me of the Carter days.

O’Bama cannot make his own decisions so someone(s) else will make them for him. That someone will not have the interests of the country in mind. Clinton was also indecisive but he seems to have made his own non-decisions and some decisions as well. He rolled with the flow and we got Welfare Reform and a lot less economic damage than could have been expected.

Good Synopsis, I spent some time with my wife's (Jewish) relatives at a cook out in the Northern Chicago burbs and the topic of discussion turns to the Presidential Race.
One of the 4 is a Staunch Republican and will pull the lever for McCain. The Aunt and host of the cook out notes she would have voted for Hillary, but was miffed that she voted for Obama locally and had broken his promise not to seek the Presidency, chalk one up for maybe not in the Obama Camp. Her husband was harder to read, played devils advocate and talked about facts and Snopes...
But the last voter was the Aunt's Dad. of the 2 elderly gents, he surprised me the most, He couldn't stand Bush, I didn't try to change his mind, but gave him a different perspective. But it is what he said, again he would have voted for Hillary, but their was something about Obama's wife that he didn't trust and would vote for McCain!
I relayed the same sentiments from another gent his age, someone he could relate to and I asked is this your and his gut feel, and he said yes.
The point is this....
This is Obama's backyard, and a voting block that should be his (Liberal Jewish vote) and McCain has a 2/4 split if not 3 out of 4.
I know this is anidotical, but you tell me what is truly going on here. IMHO he can't close the deal. Your line of the condescension rings true, the way this guy holds his head at rallyes scares the bat snaught out of me, he body language reeks of Mussolini.

Michelle comes across as a little too domineering, too cranky, too much attitude. Americans don't like that in a First Lady. When a guru Messiah is married to a Dragon Lady with ATTITUDE, that may be asking some Americans a bit too much in one election. Those kinds of things belong in a therapist's office, not the Oval Office.
