Psalm 140

1Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

2Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

3They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.

4Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

5The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.

6I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.

7O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

8Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

9As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

11Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Father,God We come to You today at a time where our nation is at a very volatile point in its existence. Anarchy is a serious threat, the freedoms we hold dear may be at stake, and this nation as a whole has forgotten its maker. Forgive us of our national sins. Deliver us from evil. Preserve Your inheritance, dear Lord, and draw us back to You.

Father, I pray for all of the candidates safety these months before the election. There are some real crazies out there, and the rhetoric of the past few years has stirred up many emotions. Enemies without and within have been a threat. Have mercy on our nation and grace.

Father, I pray for President Bush today. The limelight seems to be fading from what he is doing, but he still needs Your wisdom. Help him to execute the duties of his office. Protect him and preserve His soul for Your name's sake. Protect his family.

I pray for Israel, and for the people of Georgia and Russia. Help them in this conflict. Help them to see You and to follow Your way.

Go with us the rest of this day I pray, Lord. For it is in the matchless name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

God’s Restraint
Surely the wrath of man shall praise You; with the remainder of wrath You shall gird Yourself. —Psalm 76:10

Augustine said that God “judged it better to bring good out of evil, than not to permit any evil to exist.” Thus God takes the worst evil that men and women can do to us and turns it into good. Even the wrath of ungodly men brings praise to Him (Ps. 76:10).

God has not promised that your life will be easy—indeed it may not be. But He has promised to sustain you in your struggle and uphold you with His mighty arm. If you trust Him, He will empower you to make your way bravely through extraordinary difficulty with faith, hope, and love. The trials God permits in your life will lead to His praise and glory, if only you will abide in Him.

Furthermore, there will be a restraint and a respite. The Hebrew text is somewhat obscure in Psalm 76:10. Literally it reads, “Surely the wrath of man will praise You; the remnant of wrath [God] will bind.” God will use men’s wrath to bring glory and praise to Himself, but when that purpose is fulfilled He will then restrain it.

God will not allow you to be pressed beyond endurance. That is His sure promise. When the lesson has been learned, when the revelation of God’s glory is complete and your soul has been tried and proven—then God will raise His hand and save you. He will say, “No more.”

When He leads through some valley of trouble,
His omnipotent hand we trace;
For the trials and sorrows He sends us
Are part of His lessons in grace. —Anon.

In every desert of trial, God has an oasis of comfort.
