Green With Envy: Prius Owners Smile as Neighbors Fume
Monday , August 25, 2008
By Meg Shannon
Every morning, as Lynn Schmidt walks out of her Long Island, N.Y., home, opens the door to her baby-blue Prius, waves to her grumbling neighbor and pulls out of the driveway, she has every reason to smile.
It's not just the 45 miles per gallon her gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle is getting. And it's not only that she can go three weeks without a fill-up.
It's also because that through her choice of automobile, Lynn is doing what she considers her share of being ecologically reasonable.
"Everyone should be concerned about the level of emissions," says Schmidt. "We all need to do our part and make changes for the better."
She's not alone. With skyrocketing oil prices, many owners of hybrid vehicles and practitioners of the "green" lifestyle are seeing their eco-friendly choices pay off.
But that's led to some grumblings from late adopters and charges that the greener-than-thou are guilty of "eco-snobbery."

In twenty years we’ll be hearing about the crisis of dumping and disposal of chemical by-products from battery recycling plants.
*sigh*
Hey, Lynn.....do you have a clothes line, or is that not convenient?
Now there’s talk of making special parking spaces for Hybrids much like handicap parking spaces. Kind of counter intuative if you ask me....shouldn’t we polluters get a closer space so we don’t have to drive around the block several times looking for a space? Bahahahahaha.
I always wonder if the owner knows what I'm laughing at, but somehow I think they know.
Hey, I’m greener that she is...I haven’t bought a new car in 25 years...
Only in status among the mentally impaired.

The Prius is butt-ugly.
I think only those that are envious or feel a little guilty, would coin a phrase like, ‘eco-snobbery’, everyone else would just ignore it.
I fill up every 3 weeks with my normal car.
I just HAVE to know - does Lynn smell her own farts?
For me it has been 11. My pick up truck run just fine. If the prices finally come down on these new tech vehicles I might buy one. Until then it would take years to make the cost worth it. Not gonna do it. Not.
My family car is a 2006 Dodge Charger RT. Modified with Airraid cold-air intake and Corsa catback exhaust. Rumbles. I guarantee I enjoy it a lot more than the 2 or 3 Prius owners in my neighborhood enjoy their car. It uses more gas, but in the words of VP Cheney, “so?”.
It costs more because it's less green. Price is one of the best indicators of how much energy was consumed, how much CO2 was emitted, in its production. Hippie farms could not feed 7 billion Earthlings without huge waste and environmental impact.
lets all be smug.....I just bought a gas guzzling SUV, and not only am I gonna burn every drop of gas you save, but I saved so much money on my SUV ( they were discounting them to unbelievable low prices ) that the price of gas will never eat up the savings I got at the dealer...sorry enviroweenie, but I win again ( and I can run you over at my leisure )
If I were her neighbor, I’d be inclined to go buy a ‘72 Ford pickup with no muffler and bad rings.
