Moscow-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, speaking in the midst of one of the lowest points in the Russia-West relationship since the breakup of the Soviet Union 17 years ago, said Tuesday that his country did not seek a new Cold War-but neither was it afraid of one.

sorry but there is no way that russia could role over europe in a conventinal war any more. the EU spends a lot more for the military than russia does. the EU combined has more planes, tanks, troops, money.....
this is not cold war any more.
You dont get it do you? The russians fear only one force in europe and thats the US. The EU does not have a unified military(NATO is a tiered alliance or havent you seen the pathetic caveats certain nations have in afghanistan). The russian actually could win a conventional war there before the EU could react huge portions of it would be defeated. The russians know this and no airforce except the USAF could deter their air power.Only the US,UK,and French nuclear arsenal is what keeps the bear at bay for now.
sorry but you are wrong. it´s true that europe serious lacks transport capabilities (and the will to fight wars somewhere around the globe) we are not able to deploy many troops outside europe. but you don´t need this for defence.
russia would encounter thousands of tanks untill their troops would reach portugal (the most western point of europe). this is not possible. (btw. the EU has about 2 million troops under arms). only the US spends more on the military (a lot more) then the EU. russia has no chance to match the numbers really. true one single european country is no match for russia. but the whole EU? no way. and for the nuclear weapons you do know that france and the UK are members of the EU do you? and a last point france told years before that they will use their nuclear umbrella
to protect EU countries. don´t be stuck in cold war times. it has changed a lot.
Uhh yes I know they are part of the EU. What Im saying has to do with airpower. They could easily achieve air dominance over the EU if the US doesnt help. Once you achieve air dominance the amount of tanks is moot, and you can assert your will below against a much higher populated enemy.
you really think that russia has more planes than the 27 EU countries? if yes you are dead wrong believe me.
Another cold war is exactly what the Russians want. They look longingly back to the sixties and seventies when the USSR was a powerful adversary of the Americans.
Unfortunately, what Russia sees and what it will get if it keeps up with this dangerous kind of behavior are two completely different things.
I think russia has better pilots(with more experience) and about as many planes, and they have a unified air force and command and control structure. The EU doesnt. They also have bombers that can carry nukes or conventional. Trust me the EU cant beat russia alone. They would annihilate you then you guys would be screaming for the US to recuse you. Which we would no doubt have to do because its in our intrests.I would be for the Eu over russia dont get me wrong but the russian air force would dominate you without US airpower. If you think otherwise you are living in socialist fantasy land.
i´m split on this one. i do believe we (EU) are not able to invade russia for example but able to defend against russia? anytime. and for the air power. we do have a lot more planes combined but it´s hard to present a valid source for this one. and i do not have the time right now to find a valid source for every EU country and then summ up all numbers. and i don´t think any military in this world has the capability to invade and defeat a block big like EU or a big country like USA, Russia or china for example. No one has a military big enought for that right now. could we do serious damage? shure. but invade never. and in times of nuclear weapons this doesn´t make sense anyway. because if one of this members would lose or as you point it out would be annihilated they would use nuclear weapons. and then it does not count if you are about to win the conventional war. the result is the same we are all dead.
This has occurred to me too. They need the money. They need the product to keep flowing. If they can growl and bluster and talk the price up higher, as Achmed-nijad has been so good at doing, so much the better, but they both need to keep selling.
And on immigration Bush and McCain are both just as bad. Some say McCain is worse but that's not the case. They are both very wrong on illegal immigration and Bush would have been more than happy to sign McCain's bill if he had gotten the chance.
The butcher Lenin said that we would sell them the rope by which they would hang us with.

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games
Reuters: Aug 17, 2007
CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.
"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.
Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.
The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.
Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

It does seem that we’re doomed to slip into idiocy without some adversity to force us to return to sanity.
...though I think I'd prefer it to be in Kharkov or on the banks of the Dnieper River... watching Putin's Cretins in full retreat.
Thanks for keeping the pings going out.
