The gap between those who support and those who oppose same-sex marriage is closing, and a poll indicates that backing for a proposition to ban such marriages is lagging.
Those were two of the main findings of a poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California and released Wednesday.
The wide-ranging poll found that 60 percent of those surveyed favor bringing home troops in Iraq, that President Bush's approval rating is 24 percent and that 63 percent of likely California voters favor universal health care.
However, the biggest concern among Californians today is the economy, the poll found.
The results suggest that 54 percent of likely voters will say no to Proposition 8, the proposal to ban same-sex marriage, come November.

I call BS on the poll for same sex marriage. I would imagine they asked people in SF mostly. CA residents do not want same sex marriage and the poll that counts, the one in November, will prove me right.
8 will win easily. Not only that but, although still a long shot (9 points), McCain may win CA, at least he has a much better chance than Bush did. I know a LOT of dems who don’t like bambi but would have voted for the beast.

Same sex marriage is not something I’m willing to get behind, or even reach around to accept.

What good is a poll OR a vote when the courts overturns the results?
How many times has this (or a version of it) been on the ballot? It’s the old political trick of continuing to put it on the ballot again and again until they finally get the results they want.
Yes, the courts are firmly on the side of societal radicals and any referendum result they don’t care for will simply be swept aside. I’m confident that Prop 8 will pass, but we will hear a deafening scream from the left in November that won’t stop until they get their way. Spoiled, prattling children.
Those in California, though, in favor of traditional marriage need to believe every vote counts and convince as many people to go and vote for Prop 8.
