An estimated 809,800 prisoners of the 1,518,535 held in the nation’s prison at midyear 2007 were parents of minor children, according to a report by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Parents in prison — 52 percent of state inmates and 63 percent of federal inmates — reported having an estimated 1,706,600 minor children. Among state inmates, the percent of parents in prison decreased from 55 percent in 1997 but has remained stable for federal inmates.

Boo Hooo! Im all broke up over this. Next you will be telling m 1,518,555 children of parents are in prison.
What do you have against children?
I’ll bet it is WAAYYY more than that! That figure only includes those the perps acknowledge, not the rest for whom they were sperm donors.
It’s a shame these parents didn’t consider their children before they commited their crimes.
C’mon, drill down the data.
1. Racial composition
2. Married with a child vs. having simply sired a child
We will never see the breakdown because many of the prisoners are black and are fathers, but not in the traditional sense.
There will be Hispanic, Asian, Anglo, Indian prisoners of course. The point is that TRADITIONAL families with traditional fathers usually don’t have the males committing armed robberies, rape, etc.
It’s also a shame that the “mothers” of these children didn’t consider their desired sex partner’s propensity to be a criminal before conceiving the child.

The mother of two of those 1.7 million: one of the greatest US athletes ever, who sits in prison after being falsely accused, and pleaded guilty with the false promise that it would be the only way to avoid being seperated from her children.

I bet they're on welfare to feed that many. I thought the record was 20-some kids.
How many minor children did their victims have? How many orphans did these 800,000 leave?
I am sure that there are some innocents among those prisoners - no system is perfect, and even when the means to prove that a conviction was in error sometimes the prosecutors try to keep an innocent in jail...but that’s the exception.
The biggest irony is probably the group that couldn’t meet arbitrarily high federally mandated child support payments, and are now serving federally mandated prison sentences where they don’t have a chance to support their chidren; after having never bothered anyone in their lives.
Many of these women were not looking for a husband, only an extension of the current government program they are successfully signed on to.
Yet, how many illegals do we catch-and-release for “humanitarian” reasons because they have children? Give me a break.
On an ancillary note, I remember watching an episode of "Homicide: Life on the Streets" back in the '90s where a 10 year-old walks into a bowling alley where there was a school field trip going on (yeah, I know) and shoots another 10 year-old.
The mothers of the perp and the victim accidentally meet at the police station before they know what is up and engage in a friendly conversation, which included the fact that there was a dearth of black men in Baltimore because so many of them were in prison.
The rest of the story alluded to how part of the perp's motivation for committing the murder was so that he could go to prison and be around men because there were no men in his life.
It sort of rang true to me.
How many of these parents are in prison for abusing their kids?
What do you have against children?
I have nothing against children. I have 2 myself, but telling me prisoners have children is like telling me 95% of all male prisoners have dicks.

The Angel Tree ministry seeks to bring Christmas and Christ’s love to these children.
Check it out and contribute as you are led to.
I’d have to say that none of you are going to be drafted as political analysts and strategists. You don’t face information objectively and the other side has you so wound up that they can control your every action / reaction.
I'll bet you a million dollars that you won't either, Skippy.
