DILLONVALE, Ohio -- Barack Obama attended a barbecue and grilled Republicans on the economy yesterday in eastern Ohio, a region cool toward him in the March primary and important to his chances this fall.
Obama, spending his third day in the state since Friday, spoke at New Philadelphia yesterday and greeted supporters at a farm in Dillonvale, south of Steubenville on the edge of economically hard-hit Appalachian Ohio.
He argued at Kent State University's Tuscarawas campus that Republicans are not discussing the economy at their convention in St. Paul because of how bad it is, and that the GOP and John McCain are focusing on "personalities" instead.
"I guess I don't blame them because if you don't have any issues to run on, I guess you want it all to be about personalities," Obama said, adding later that "Republicans are really bad at governing, but they're good at running campaigns."
Obama promised to raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011 and expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, saying, "If you're working full time in this society, you may not be rich, but at least you can keep a roof over your head and you can look after your children."
With McCain running mate Sarah Palin speaking last night, Obama also cited a statistic that women on average earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes and promised, "We are going to pass equal pay for equal work."
Noting that Obama mistakenly referred to New Philadelphia as "New Pennsylvania" at one point, Paul Lindsay, McCain's Ohio spokesman, said Obama lacks the judgment and experience to get the economy moving.
"If Barack Obama doesn't even know where his campaign is, how does he expect to confront the critical issues facing families in Ohio?" Lindsay said.
