Hmmmm...I’ve read the book. That’s now how it ends. I’m not worried.

If you go to the CERN website, they have a link to the
question about black-holes production, doomsday et al...

Apparently , their thinking goes, the collisions they will create in the
accelerator are LESS in energy than those created in
our atmosphere when much higher energy cosmic rays
hit our planet. The reasoning is that since those high
energy collisions haven’t caused black hole cascades,
it probably won’t occur at CERN...but then again...who
knows what happens in a closed space, rather than in the
atmosphere?

My guess, is that the experiments will reveal another, and
different set of “layers” of matter, and further confuse
our understanding....till the super solar system sized
accelerator is produced in the year 2525.

OK, I gotta ask. How can recreating the “Big Bang” benefit mankind?

It could allow physicists to discover the Higgs boson. The Higgs field is (assuming the current standard model is correct, which it may not be) what imparts mass to particles (some particles, such as photons, seem to not interact with the Higgs field, which is why they appear to have zero rest mass).

There are an almost endless number of advances that could result. Two examples are:

If we can control mass via the Higgs field, we could use it to evoke gravitational containment of hydrogen, giving us an easy path to fusion power. With the containment problem solved, the world's energy problems would be a thing of the past.

If we can control mass via the Higgs field, we could use it to eliminate the effective mass of a vehicle, giving us a sort of "antigravity". This would make a variety of activities, such as space launches, almost trivial.

And wouldn’t you know it that the world ends just when it looks like the Cubs could actually win the World Series.

Imagine him [Quark] as the Fed chairman.

THAT would be more than worth the price of admission, lol

“Nothing will happen for at least four years,” retired German Otto Rossler told the Mail. “Then someone will spot a light ray coming out of the Indian Ocean during the night and no one will be able to explain it.”

Yep, we’re screwed.

You apparently want to let others do the thinking for Americans.

And when they do, it will be from a call center in New Delhi, telling us that what we need to do is to "reinstall Windows".

Also, imagine him as the chair of the Senate Finance Committee or as the head honcho of the OMB.

Nothing good or groundbreaking ever comes without risk.

Fire it up, I say.

LOL, not bad, but let's face it: those gigs are all penny ante stuff, Quark needs to be the next President of the World Bank.

Nothing else will do!

That’s one I missed, thanks for posting it. So this Hadron thingie pushes us into the 2nd dimension of time, big deal. Some people around here are so one-dimensional.

Agreed. If it creates the crystals required for making fully functional lightsabres a reality, go for it.

Let's see...it's September of 2008...and this thing starts up, and the critics say a quasar could form in the center of the earth and in four years we'll see a beam of light coming out of the Indian Ocean, then one on the other side of the earth...world ends.

Doesn't the Mayan Calendar and a lot of prophecies and stuff like the I-Ching say that the world will end in just about four years, exactly, in December, 2012?

Just sayin'...

If I have to start keeping track of a second dimension of time, I’m not sure my planner is going to be sufficient. Of course, I can always claim that I was late for work and app’ts due to fact that I am going by the wrong dimension of time. It’ll be cool.
