Why rednecks may rule the world (don't read if you've got a heart condition)
BBC ^ | 6 September 2008 | Joe Bageant

Posted on 09/09/2008 4:30:59 PM PDT by Lorianne

During this US election cycle we are hearing a lot from the pundits and candidates about "heartland voters," and "white working class voters."

What they are talking about are rednecks. But in their political correctness, media types cannot bring themselves to utter the word "redneck." So I'll say it for them: redneck-redneck-redneck-redneck.

The fact is that we American rednecks embrace the term in a sort of proud defiance. To us, the term redneck indicates a culture we were born in and enjoy. So I find it very interesting that politically correct people have taken it upon themselves to protect us from what has come to be one of our own warm and light hearted terms for one another.

On the other hand, I can quite imagine their concern, given what's at stake in the upcoming election. We represent at least a third of all voters and no US president has ever been elected without our support.

That’s kind of a swiss army knife article for Brit leftists. You have the:

1. Americans as ignorant boobs cliche covered.
2. Excuse for why Obama will lose covered.
3. Brit fascination that the uncouth commoners actually determine who gets the power covered.

As it becomes clear that Obama is tanking, expect more articles like this one, especially from within rather than just from without.

God bless the rednecks, for it is they who feed cattle on cold snowy days when the rest of us will not leave the house, so that we might have food on the table.

It is they who saw the lumber and build the houses that we might have a warm place to sleep.

It is they who join the military and die that we may live.

In short, it is they who make the world go around.

They are the ones that make the ideas that we concoct in our air conditions offices work, sometimes modifying the original idea so it will work.

Thank God for the rednecks.

Belief that no law is above God's law, not even the US Constitution.

Hyper patriotism. A fighting defence of native land, home and heart, even when it is not actually threatened: ie, Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Somalia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Haiti and dozens more with righteous operations titles such as Enduring Freedom, Restore Hope, and Just Cause.

...

And that has every thinking person here in the US, except perhaps John McCain and Sarah Palin, worried.

Hey Joe!

"Thinking people" here know that the Framers drafted our Constitution to conform to G-d's Law; and we also know the something about the abreviations i.e and e.g.. We know what they mean and when to use one and not the other.

Good luck with you BBC gig.

The author was born in Virginia;

I understood that while reading the article, but I still got the impression that he held some disdain for rednecks. Some of the qualities he listed were ones I thought to be admirable, but he couldn't hide his disapproval of them. I think the author has "outgrown" whatever redneck roots he might have had.

I thought the author was humorous at first, but then he revealed himself to be an idiot:

Personal pride in equality. No man, however rich or powerful, is better than me.

That is the American ideal, sir. It's enshrined in our founding document!!!

But I guess you don't understand that, hangin' out over there with all them Redcoats...

I question your redneck credentials.

One of the great songs of all time.

I'll wear the redneck label without shame. I may not look like a traditional redneck as I work in software development in a white collar type job. However, don't think I've abandoned the roots that make me who I am. My father and grandfather were both towboat guys for years, and my uncle can almost track deer by scent like his dog does. I can shoot quarter size groups 100 yards and I can easily shoot a buck at 300 yards. So while I might not look the part, if things go bad, don't think I can't or won't come out my front door loaded for bear and knowing how to use it to protect myself and my family.

Country folks really can survive.

This was posted before and I wrote this reply and will post it again.

It was the same white working class (rednecks if you will) who moved west after the turn of the 19th century. They took 40 acres and cut down the trees and pulled the stumps. In their spare time they hunted game to feed their family and dug wells. How many of you have ever been out in the woods and seen and considered the enormity of this task? Then in winter they took the logs and hewed them and then constructed log cabins. The same “rednecks” learned to work with other in the community so people would help them when it came to birthing babies and helping out when somebody was ill. They had to pull their weight and that was it, or they would not be a part of the community. These tasks went on for years. To survive you had to be resourceful, reliable and have a will of iron. If you didn't you perished, or if you had the money you went back to Europe. This was an enormous job and an enormous undertaking. There was danger and people defended and fought for what little was theirs. The women worked right beside the men and raised families to boot.Their way was not one iota easier.
Well at about mid century they were established and the frontier was gone they had survived and ensured their survival. So they took the skills and attributes they gained from the frontier and put them to work at building a more prosperous country and a better life for themselves. And when the turn of the next century happened they had built the most prosperous country in the face of the world. They passed these habits and values to there children.

They were world changers. That little country that consisted of 13 colonies turned states along the Atlantic coast with little of anything past the Appalachians spread form sea to shining sea. It was a fantastic success. Most places in Europe in contrast looked pretty much the same way they did at the end and the beginning of the nineteenth century. We learned that if we don't like the way the world works, and if we are right. Then we go out and change it. And we have don it many times over and the rest of the world has always been better for it.

Those people (red necks if you will) passed these values onto their children and because of it American has always been successful. That is one reason why I would go for a person not so removed from he pioneers over Barrak Obama any day. Sarah Palins life experience on the near frontier of Alaska beats BO’s Harvard education any day.

Redneck Girl
Bellamy Brothers

Redneck girl likes to cruise in Daddy’s pickup truck
And a redneck girl plays her hand when she’s down on her luck
Living for a Friday afternoon
She’s gonna show one ole boy that we can move
And I pray that someday I will find me a redneck girl

Redneck girl likes to stay out all night long
She makes sweet rock ‘n roll while she listens to the country songs
She’s waitin’ for that moment of surrender
Her hands are calloused but her heart is tender

And I pray that someday I will find me a redneck girl
Oh give me a, give me a, give me a redneck girl
Give me a give me a give me a redneck girl

Oh give me a, give me a, give me a redneck girl
Oh give me a, give me a, give me a redneck girl

A redneck girl got a name on the back of her belt
She’s got a kiss on her lips for her man and no one else
A coyote’s howling out on the prairie
First comes love then comes marriage
And I pray that someday I will find me a redneck girl
Yeah give me a, give me a, give me a redneck girl...

The term redneck indicates a lifestyle and culture that can be found in every state in our union. The essentials of redneck culture were brought to America by what we call the Scots Irish, after first being shipped to the Ulster Plantation, where our, uh, remarkable cultural legacy can still be seen every 12 July in Ireland. Ultimately, the Scots Irish have had more of an effect on the American ethos than any other immigrant group.

“Redneck Defined”

My daddy was a Redneck
He worked from can to cain’t
On farms, on roads in factories
Lord knows he weren’t no saint

Life sacrificed for freedom
Blood shed for sovereignty
His word was solemn contract
His deed the guarantee

His sweat built this here nation
His labor millions fed
I strive to be just like he was
My neck should be so red.

The closest comparsion overseas to an American Redneck is an Afrikaner, IMHO. Both settled the frontier, conservative and live in a culture of “self-preservation”.

In short, it is they who make the world go around.

I've seen more of the Big Blue Marble than I deserve. The one thing I've learned about this great big world of ours - there are Rednecks everywhere you go.

  1. They're always the kindest and most humble folks by far.
  2. They're the people that put thought into action.
  3. They have a firm grip on reality.
  4. Intellectually they are full of insight and intuition.
  5. They are reasonable and logical and honest.
Give me a Redneck over a Ivy League educated aristocrat wannabe any day.

You might be a redneck Jedi if...

You ever heard the phrase, "May the force be with y'all."
Your Jedi robe is a camouflage color.
You have ever used your light saber to open a bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill.
At least one wing of your X-Wings is primer colored.
You have bantha horns on the front of your land speeder.
You can easily describe the taste of an Ewok.
You have ever had an X-wing up on blocks in your yard.
You ever lost a hand during a light saber fight because you had to spit.
The worst part of spending time on Dagobah is the dadgum skeeters.
Wookies are offended by your B.O.
You have ever used the force to get yourself another beer so you didn't have to wait for a commercial.
You have ever used the force in conjunction with fishing/bowling.
Your father has ever said to you, "Shoot, son come on over to the dark side...it'll be a hoot."
You have ever had your R-2 unit use its self-defense electro-shock thingy to get the barbecue grill to light.
You have a confederate flag painted on the hood of your landspeeder.
You have ever accidentally referred to Darth Vader's evil empire as "them damn Yankees."
You have a cousin who bears a strong resemblance to Chewbacca.
You suggested that they outfit the Millennium Falcon with red wood deck.
You were the only person drinking Jack Daniels on the rocks during the cantina scene.
