Help for Obama's Shack-Living Brother September 10, 2008 06:05 PM ET | Paul Bedard | Permanent Link

It was only a matter of time: A website has been created to provide donations to Sen. Barack Obama's half brother, who lives on $12 a year in a shack in Kenya. Called Help Obama's Brother, the site draws attention to George Hussein Onyango Obama, living in a hut in the "tough" town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi. "If Barack Obama won't send his brother a few bucks for rent, we can step up and help a brother out," headlines the site. Of course, the site is a jab at Obama by his critics, but it's surprising that the Republican Party didn't do this as soon as the original story appeared. There were indications that a GOP move was afoot, but no one within the party acted.

The man behind this site is Tim Anderson, who lives in Minneapolis. He tells me that he got the idea to set up a nonprofit charity during last week's Republican National Convention, when he read about the plight of George Obama. "I thought, wow, he's got to be helping him out. But he's not," says Anderson. He conceded that "I'm not a huge Obama supporter" but added that "I have good intentions." His plan is this: Raise enough money, and fast, to buy Obama's brother an apartment or house, a car, food, and maybe some auto mechanic classes. "And if he wants to come to America, we'll help with that, too," says Anderson. He's hoping to generate media attention because Anderson fears that if Obama loses the presidential election, donations will dry up, and he'd like to have enough money to prepay three years' worth of rent or mortgage. Anderson says he is not being backed by Republicans and hasn't received any donations of note yet. "I just set up the charity," he says. He plans to videotape his efforts and purchases as well as a trip to Africa to deliver the goods. "I want it on the up and up," he told Whispers. He compared his efforts to the popular TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

We should get that guys address and everyone who listens to Rush or Hannity or Medved send him just a dollar. With all those listeners sending that one dollar that guy could wind up buying that country .....

How did this guy end up with a Christian first name (George)? Isn’t there anything normal about this family at all?

I think there are other efforts to help the brother, and I'm not against it, but he will reap a windfall if it doesn't get expropriated whereas there will be others in more dire need, so I'm going to pass. I was somewhat impressed by the half-brother, personally think him better looking than Obama. He's handles English fairly well, sounds like he's had a fairly decent education.

How do we know he is really his half-brother? I don't like to think that way, but there are too many strange stories out there now. Is that Italian magazine to be taken as truth?

"If Barack Obama won't send his brother a few bucks for rent, we can step up and help a brother out,"

That's pretty sisgusting, Obama's brother living in a mere shack and living on amere 12 bucks a month while Obama and Michelle live in a lavish Mansion. He won't even send his poor bro a grand at the very least when he has so much? It speaks volumes as to what Obama really is...

I want to donate, but I am leary that this is a scam.

Will this money really go to George? I would love for George to see the charity of America. Heck, $200 would be amazing for him.

Unless I’m completely mistaken, I thought there was already something in place to help George out - and that it did have some ties to a Republican (most likely a conservative activist - not associated with the GOP or anything like that). I’ll check back later to see if someone put up more info. on that...

It’s a great idea to help George, however, I think helping out the entire community/area might be a better goal?

I’m not even sure I would could what they are a family. Obama and his family went to HI, and HE and HIS STAFF went to visit grandma. No Michelle and no cute grandkids. He is NOT a good family man to anyone besides his wife and kids (except for the church he took them to).

That’s what struck me so profoundly about Obama, and it’s not just his brother, but his entire family - living without electricity and running water... If Obama was SERIOUS about helping out his poor brethren in Africa why hasn’t he at LEAST helped out his own family? He talks about sending government aid to Africa, but won’t set the example by helping his own family? As you said - it really speaks volumes about Obama himself, and his character. He will use their poverty when it suits him to show how “uncaring” the world is, but will not sacrifice ANYTHING of his own to even help his own flesh and blood... It’s so sad, really.
