Is it still too soon for jokes about Sept. 11? (MSNBC article)

At a Friars Club roast of Hugh Hefner three weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, comedian Gilbert Gottfried not only pushed the envelope, he set it on fire. He was at the podium, about to launch into the abundantly filthy “Aristocrats” joke that inspired an entire documentary film, when he mentioned that he had tried to get a direct flight “but they said they have to stop at the Empire State Building first.”

I remember the Onion bit about Muhammad Atta suprised to be in hell and not with 72 virgins, and it was the first time I allowed myself to laugh. I needed that. If it is the right kind of humor, it is okay.

It’s an emotional response mechanism.

Mel Brooks, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, frequently worked Hitler into his comedy.

Not at all. Here's one:

Didja hear the one about how the MSNBC studios were destroyed on 9/11?

No?

Well doesn't that suck.

Here’s a story I heard while stationed at Pearl Harbor.

According to the story, in the evening a car with Japanese tourists pulls up to the base’s gate, that’s guarded by the U. S. Marines.

They ask the Marine on duty where the U.S.S. Arizona is?(for those who don’t know it’s a war memorial).

The Marine states “It’s just where you FU@@ERS left it!”.

Damn, I love the Marines!

Actually, this is not a joke.

According to some friends who knew the Marine guards, this was an actual event that occured while I was stationed there. (Quite a few years back).

Unfortunately, I also heard the Marine was chewed out for his “off the cuff” comment.

Still, humor is a human defense mechanism.

According to legend, when Mel Brooks was at the Battle of the Bulge the Nazis began a psy-ops offensive, asking for Americans to surrender over loudspeakers. Brooks responded by loudly performing an entire set of classic vaudeville songs back at the Nazis.
