Last Chance -- For Life
Real Clear Politics ^ | September 14, 2008 | Patrick Buchanan

Posted on 09/14/2008 1:44:31 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

But more crucial than their conflicting beliefs is the political reality. This election is America's last hope to reverse Roe v. Wade. Upon its outcome will rest the life, or death, of millions of unborn children. The great social cause of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, of the Evangelical and Pentecostal churches, of the entire right-to-life movement, hangs today in the balance.

Why? It is not just that Obama is a pro-choice absolutist who defends the grisly procedure known as partial-birth abortion, who backs a Freedom of Choice Act to abolish every restriction in every state, who even opposed a born-alive infant protection act.

Nor is it because Joe Biden is a NARAL Catholic who has been admonished by bishops not to take communion because he has, through his career, supported a women's "right" to abortion, the exercise of which right has ended the lives of 45 million unborn.

Nor is it even because McCain professes to be pro-life, or Gov. Palin is a woman who not only talks the talk but walks the walk of life.

No. The reason this election is the last chance for life is the Supreme Court. For it alone -- given the cowardice of a Congress that refuses to restrict its authority -- has the power to reverse Roe, and because that court may be within a single vote of doing so.

Good article. Pat always puts, what’s important, on the table.

It’s unfortunate Pat Buchanan has to stain an issue as important as life with his toxic nature.

True, but this editorial is a good one, in spite of his shortcomings.

Ooooooooo... Great points, but why stir up liberals to the issue? That I don't get. Unless the Catholic church has some reason to think that having a stand in the matter is for some undefined reason, not Politically correct, which in this case would be morally incorrect.

The Church should speak out and take a stand for the MORALLY correct. Its about time. All Churches should, and no I am not religious.

I long for the day when Roe is overturned more than any other single event affecting this nation.

I long for long overdue exposure of the spurious logic that maintains that "my body" includes a right to eviscerate the bodies of others.

I long for the lie to be put to the notion that that cultural acceptance of the "right" of abortion is a good for women, and not a permanent psychological scar, an utter affront to womanhood and motherhood.

And yes, I long for the crutch of abortion to be yanked out from under men, that they may once again assume the role of men - not boys - and take responsibility for their actions.

Folks, this election, like the ones preceeding, is critically important to curtail the lie-driven bloodshed that has taken over 50 million lives, and permanently scarred millions of women.

Can you imagine the excitement of McCain nominating a Palin-type judge to SCOTUS? My mouth is watering at the possibilities!

The CATHOLIC Church is speaking out about this issue. Here is a list of Bishops that have spoken out against Pelosi, Biden, Kerry, Kennedy and their ilk. I have no doubt that this list will have MORE bishops on it this next week!

Updated: American Bishops who have spoken against Pelosi

Here is the complete list of American bishops who have responded to Nancy Pelosi's comments so far:
  1. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver was the first American bishop to respond
  2. ... Bishop James Conley, his auxiliary, joined him
  3. Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington DC responded twice, first in a press release and second in a statement to The Hill. He has also appeared on Fox News, I am told.
  4. Cardinal Justin Regali of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued this statement through the USCCB website...
  5. ... Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, joined him
  6. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York publised a strongly worded statement of his own
  7. Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo issued a letter correcting Pelosi's claims
  8. Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh and...
  9. ... Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs have chimed-in
  10. Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio, CNA reports has added his voice ...
  11. ... Bishop Oscar Cantu, his auxiliary bishop, has joined him
  12. Bishop William Murphy of Rockville has published an extensive letter
  13. Bishop Edward Slattery of Tulsa has a detailed response
  14. Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas has joined the USCCB's efforts
  15. Bishop Gregory Aymond of Austin is on-board
  16. Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston mentions the USCCB on his blog
  17. Bishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando has written at length
  18. Archbishop John Nienstedt of Saint Paul/Minneapolis challenges Pelosi's statement
  19. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, President of the US Bishops, has weighed-in
  20. Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, OR publishes in the Catholic Sentinel
  21. Bishop Jerome Listecki of La Crosse, WI responds in a word document
  22. Bishop Richard Lennon of Cleveland, OH will comment in his September 5th column (PDF)
  23. Bishop Ralph Nickless of Sioux City, IA has one of the very best responses I've read
  24. Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco has invited Pelosi to a "conversation"
  25. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn: "Judging the Candidates"

{Last updated on September 10th.}

Notes:

  • Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
  • Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
  • #26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th

The reason this election is the last chance for life is the Supreme Court. For it alone -- given the cowardice of a Congress that refuses to restrict its authority -- has the power to reverse Roe, and because that court may be within a single vote of doing so.

The Supremes and the War on Terror are the two issues that are most important to me this election. For those reasons, I was going to vote for McCain, just to keep Obama out of the White House. I wasn't excited about it,and I wasn't even going to bother with a yard sign or anything. When he chose Sarah, I was just thrilled he'd chosen a solid conservative, and I immediately ordered some campaign stuff!

When McCain-Palin win, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and John Paul Stevens are going to be SO disappointed. They were hoping for an Obama win so they could retire, satisfied that they'd be replace by someone as liberal or MORE so than they. Now they'll be haunted knowing that when they DO leave, either through retirement, or kicking the bucket, they will be replaced by someone who WILL be willing to overturn Roe. I'd like to see Janice Rogers Brown brought up for nomination, but I'd be TRULY excited if Fred Thompson were appointed! I'd pay real money to watch THOSE confirmation hearings!
