McCain closing gap on Obama in New York poll (Bad news for The One)

ALBANY - The race for the White House is a statistical dead heat, according to a new poll.

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, leads Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee, 46 percent to 41 percent in a survey of 626 registered voters by the Siena Research Institute in upstate Loudonville. The survey, conducted last week, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

"Although New York has long been regarded as a 'safe' state for Democrats in presidential politics, likely voters in the Empire State are currently only giving Senator Obama a five-point cushion," said pollster Steven Greenberg. "The conventions are over. The running mates are set. And as voters begin to focus on the race, New York's overwhelming Democratic enrollment advantage is not reflected in how voters tell Siena they plan to vote."

Obama should be ahead by double digits in New York! I suspect the same is true in California, where no polling has been done since July. He's not likely to lose either of the Democratic mega states. But narrow wins would not put him in the White House!

I have been wondering why we haven’t see any poling data on CA in a real long time. I suspect the poling orgs aren’t reporting because CA might also be in play.

No wonder panic is setting in in Team Obama. There’s only one thing to do. Return to Berlin!

California was a GOP stronghold til 1992. Now its a Dem stronghold. New York has been a Dem stronghold and went for the GOP twice: Nixon in 1972 and Reagan in 1984.

If you watch Rudy G over the next 60-odd days...you will see a major front created in NY for McCain. If Obama loses NY, then the entire election is wrapped up on election night very early.

My son (from Texas) lives in NY State and says that no one he knew was interested in the election. The day after Palin’s speech, he went to work and it was all they were talking about. They’re stoked!

If Obama does lose New York, its a national landslide. My bet is California would also go McCain!

I would like to see a more well established polling company confirm these results. The sample size is very small here and I don’t see their party id breakdown.

It would be very interesting to see rasmussen poll the big blue states right about now.

My Mom lives in Saratoga county in a senior apt complex - not one supporter there for Obama. My younger sister, a NY’er just changed her voter registration to Republican to vote for McCain. That was before Gov. Palin too!

I remember when Pataki won his first term. It was a shocker. If I remember right, he was behind about 10% in the polls.

New York could be the surprise of the election. The Spitzer fallout has left a lot of Democrats demoralized and depressed. And Obama's amateur campaign isn't helping the party's down ticket in Blue States.

I have been wondering why we haven’t see any poling data on CA in a real long time.

Me, too. And the answer is obvious.

It is advantageous, money-wise, for the Drive-Bys and the pollsters to keep harping on how close the race is. If it's discovered to be a rout with weeks to go, they stand to lose a LOT of cash.

I doubt McCain has a serious chance in New York, anymore than he has in California. However, if the state can go from “solid” to “leaning” for Obama it may force him to spend more of Mr. Soros’ money there and weaken him in other areas. Those of us in Red enclaves should, in the words of an old Confederate general, “keep up a good scare”.

Sometimes it can be lonely to be a conservative in an area where most of the people are leftists and the local media deny that conservatives even exist, other than objects of contempt. Keep in mind , there are more conservatives in New York city than there are people period in Minneapolis, Minnesota and more conservatives in New York State than there are people in Alabama.

I was none to happy to see Michelle dis the people of NY who suffered great trauma and devastation on September 11, 2001. If you can’t show up for that event, why bother anywhere else? I hope in addition to seeing McCain is the best man for the job, that ALL NYers saw this dismissal of the gravity of honoring that day as a a very big negative.

Why were you unhappy? Look at your last three words!

This should be thrown in her face, especially since it was documented she attended another event that day, yet said she was not in NYC b/c of the first day of school.
