Lamentations 3
It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the past 8 years of Your faithfulness to us as we have labored in prayer for our dear President, his family, our troops, and this nation. Lord, we have been through many ups and downs these years. We have seen tragedy unlike any Presidency and we have seen triumph as well. Though the enemies of the President and this nation will not acknowledge it, we acknowledge that You have been with us and have been our helper in the storm and in the times of peace, and for that we are eternally grateful.

Lord, as we have so many times before, we lift up to You President Bush and Laura. They have been good warriors for this land. Though we may have disagreed with his policies a time or two, overall, we have witnessed a man of great character whom history will ultimately judge favorably. I can think of nobody else at the time of his election that would have been better for the part. Surely, President Bush was here for such a time as this.

Lord, as we see the administration winding down, we nevertheless see the politicians frothing with this charge or that charge about the current economic situation. Lord, let the American people see and embrace the truth, is all we ask here. You will carry us through, we know, even in a depression. But we would that You would let the truth prevail over lying tongues and opportunistic spirits.

I pray for Senator McCain and Governor Palin. Keep them safe, Lord. Let their hearts be aligned with Yours in all matters. Let their souls cling to You and may they know You now as never before. Lord, may Your presence go with them and may they prevail over those who would destroy them.

Watch over us Lord. Our nation’s fate is in the balance, but as the verse says - our hope is in You.

We love You, Lord. And once again, thank You for all You are and for all You do.

For it is in the blessed name of Christ Jesus my Lord that I pray these things.

Amen.

Spare Beds
Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. —Hebrews 13:2

In 2004, Casey Fenton co-founded a nonprofit service that helps travelers find a “friendlier alternative” to unfriendly hotels. They find homeowners who are willing to offer their spare beds and couches to others.

The group boasts almost a quarter of a million friendships that have been formed from their service. “The more we network,” said Fenton, “the better chance we have of this world being a better place.”

That service sounds a lot like biblical hospitality. In the final pages of his letter to the Hebrews, the writer instructed believers to practice their faith in Jesus Christ through hospitality (13:2). That was defined by the early Christ-followers as acts of generosity toward strangers.

In the first century, hospitality often included housing a guest. This was hardest to do during a time of persecution. These believers would not know whether the person was a spy or a fellow believer being pursued. But by entertaining strangers, the writer said, they could indeed be inviting a blessing into their homes.

As God’s people, we are called to be hospitable to others as part of our gratitude for the salvation we have received from God.

Lord, grant me a loving heart,
A will to give and share,
A whispered prayer upon my lips
To show I really care. —Brandt

People with a heart for God have a heart for people.
