Crocodiles enjoy gun-free Solomon Islands

Attempts to turn Solomon Islands into a gun-free society has had an unintended deadly side effect.

It's lead in part, to an increase in the number of fatal crocodile attacks.

Guns were banned on Solomon Islands following racial tensions and the arrival in 2003 of the Australian lead Regional Assistance Mission, RAMSI.

Solomon Islands Acting Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall, has told Radio Australia at least six people have been killed by crocodiles in the past 18 months.

"We have various reports from around the provinces in Solomon Islands... of crocodiles entering into locations where fishermen are present or where children are bathing or where families are bathing and the reports that we are getting is that the number of crocodiles is increasing," he said.

The Australians have considerable experience in placing a higher value on crocodiles than on human life.

Aren't the anti-freedom types fond of saying "if it saves just one life, it is worth it"?

Guns save lives.

How did the locals kill crocs before firearms were introduced? Spears? Perhaps they didn’t and they’ve historically been croc food.

Machetes. Have they banned machetes?

If not, everyone is still at grave risk!

Are the Solomon Islands really gun-free? During WWII, the archipelago was the scene of heavy fighting, so one would think that a considerable number of Garands and Arisakas would have been left behind on the battlefields.

Check the CIA World Fact Book on the Solomon Islands. You'll see why these 'people' were disarmed.

(let the croc's eat them all)

Sounds like our politicians not allowing us to carry guns in National Parks inhabited by grizzlies, mountain lions, etc.

The laws of unintended consequences are ever-present.

I can laugh and weep at the follies of Liberals. Laugh because they’re so brain dead, but weep because so many lives are lost due to their policies.
