Huh? Okay I can understand his suspension of stops to do his job in this time of crisis. But to stop the ads? That I can’t figure.

This is just dumb! Or am I missing something?

OK - so the idea is if Obama keeps running ads it makes him look bad. However, the sheeple that are still undecided probably haven’t even paid enough attention to realize McCain has done this, so if Obama does run an ad they’ll just say their “wow” and move on, not helping McCain and in fact helping Obama. If Obama follows suit, I guess it could make it look like he’s just following McCain’s lead.

Also - is there a timeframe here?

Oh come on.
What not just trow in the towel now and forget about the election.
Good grief, go to Washington do your stuff but keep the ads on and get ready for the debate.
JM is an idiot if he thinks Barry would suspend his campaign.
Is JM going to let Palin be Palin and keep with these rallies?

The 527s should turn up the heat during this time.

I’m still not sure if this is a good idea on McCain’s part. I suppose the political goal will be to change the conversation, and inoculate himself against economic attacks.

Here’s what I think is going on: Rick Davis is toast.

McCain should craft and run a single, 1-minute ad to run the rest of the week. The ad should state that he is taking his ads off the air, and profess that this is the time for us to come together as Americans, and not Democrats and Republicans. Then call for “my opponent” to join him in Washington to do “the people’s business”. “This cannot wait” for the next President, but must “be solved now” so our nation and economy can be put on a solid footing.

This just makes me think there has got to be something more behind this. Very drastic sudden moves like this are a pretty big deal, especially this close to the election. Anyone have any thoughts whether something else could be going on?

And he's forcing Obama to follow suit. He really means it when he says "Country First." This just reinforces his campaign's theme. We just saw how Obama reacted to a full blown crisis.

I agree.
Running ads has no impact on working on senate legislation.
Just like Sarah Palin can still be out there doing campaign events while Senator McCain is doing his job in Washington.

Lets see both 0bama and Biden go back to Washington while Sarah is out there drawing tens out thousands of people at rallies.

These kinds of self-defeating unilateral decisions from McCain have never made sense.

One thing I have noticed is that this guy Schmidt is one hell of an advisor, way way better than Rove ever pretended to be. He knows how to fight back, and hit at the right vulnerabilities. He has been right on target with all he has done, and, given the shortcomings of his candidate, has done as well as can be imagined.

If this is McCain being McCain, it may be a blunder. But if it is undertaken with the agreement of Schmidt that this will not hurt the campaign, then I would trust that judgment.

In a “damage control for McCain” sense or a McCain-throwing-Davis-Under-The-Bus sense?

Well as I see it, the alphabet media and their cohorts have to bring us the news (snicker) so McCain will be seen and heard in Washington while O is buying McNuggets and kissing babies. Maybe this will work? McCain is a different kinda guy. He by no means is a lock step Consevative/Republican which the Indy’s dont want. We’ll see.

Davis suspended getting money from his consulting business at the beginning of 2006 when he went to work for McCain so don’t see why he would be toast unless there is something we don’t know.

This is Sen McCain’s way of saying — I am putting My Country First.
