For the first time, there is a clear front-runner (Obama)
The Globe and Mail ^ | September 28, 2008 | John Ibbitson

John McCain's campaign is in crisis. The Republican presidential candidate must quickly reverse recent sharp declines and recapture the momentum in this election race if he is to avoid falling fatally far behind Barack Obama, his Democratic opponent.

Provided the 12-figure rescue package agreed to over the weekend makes it through the House of Representatives and the Senate, and quickly, the financial emergency may recede a bit as the overriding issue of this election campaign, although it will never be far from voters' minds.

Wall Street's distress poses an existential (this election's favourite buzzword) threat to Mr. McCain's campaign. Six of seven opinion polls, all conducted last week, put Mr. Obama at least five percentage points ahead of Mr. McCain (though one poll, GW/Battleground Tracking, had Mr. McCain ahead by two points).

The most recent survey, by Gallup Tracking, has Mr. Obama eight points up. And while many pundits, including this one, thought Mr. McCain outperformed Mr. Obama during the foreign-policy part of Friday night's televised debate, viewers disagreed.

Three separate snap polls – by CBS, CNN/Opinion Research and USA Today/Gallup – confirmed that it was actually Mr. Obama's night.

In the USA Today/Gallup survey, for example, 46 per cent of those polled thought Mr. Obama had outperformed Mr. McCain, while 34 per cent thought the opposite.

Fifty-two per cent picked Mr. Obama, when they were asked which candidate offered the best proposals for change to solve the country's problems. Thirty-five per cent picked Mr. McCain.

Two things seem to be at work. First, the economy – which was always the No. 1 issue in this campaign – has become elephantine in proportion.

I heard one of the talking heads on Fox News say that 6% or more of those answering polls lied saying they would vote for Obama just so they didn't appear racist.

I was actually thinking today...does an Obama win mean a second Republican Revolution in 2010?

Yes, and it'll make 1980 look like a picnic.

“Repubs take it back 2 years into Obama’s term and then retake the WH in 2012.”

Do you honestly think there is going to be anything worth taking back if this dirtball gets his scummy little hands on the presidency?

It won’t take this steaming pile of Marxist waste to destroy what’s left of our country and constitution.

He is dangerous. Not because he is some kind of whiz kid (he is a moron) but because of who will be pulling his strings.

We are, baring a miracle, seriously screwed.

The only chance we would have should they decide to take the guns is a military willing to rebel. We’re long past an armed citizenry being able to take the country back. We just have to pray it doesn’t happen and try to change the course of Washington.

Thanks for that response. That's what I was trying to say. I don't think it is extreme to be concerned about Obama's tactics and friends in high places; to think about the power he could yield if there was some made-up reason for "martial law." It is just thinking ahead.

I love this country so much, but I think it’s really screwed up to just hold our breath and wish and hope... that’s what Obama’s offering.

Somebody’s always going to disagree even if it’s just in principle. Right now, we’re looking pretty weak on the international scene as well. I believe if Russia or anyone else took us to task they would be surprised, but if you look closely their goals are long-term. They’re in it for the long haul and are positioning for future exploits.

Somebody will think I’m taking that too far also, but as you said, “time will tell”.

Time will tell...

oops

put “four years” between “waste” and “to”

It won’t take this steaming pile of Marxist waste four years to destroy what’s left of our country and constitution.

I have two.

1. I believe that McCain and Palin will win this November. “Front-runners” don’t always end up winning, and a lot can happen between now and Nov. 4.

2. I can’t wait until this election is over!!!!!

Huh? There is no way that less than two million troops (make it 3 million with the police) could control the other 300 odd million citizens if they don't want to be controlled, short of lobbing nuclear weapons at us, willy-nilly. Especially an armed citizenry. That was the whole purpose of the 2nd amendment. That's why the old Soviet Union had so much trouble in Afghanistan and why Iraq was no cakewalk for us, because the population is armed! Invading or subjugating Britain or France would be a tea party in comparison.

The real poll happens in November. I'll hold my judgement on a winner until I see those results.
That being said, I know that God is in charge. He has promised us that there will be storms and our faith will determine the outcome.

I will be glad to not hear the opinions of the d@mned British again. If we wanted their input in our election we would still be a colony. They should get their teeth repaired or go attend their new Sharia court or have a cup of tea and mind their own business.

Wishful thinking on their part.

McCain is still going to win in a landslide, that’s when we get to read the REALLY FUN articles.

There will never be a President Barack Hussein Obama, at least not in my lifetime, and I’ll be glad I’m dead when there is.

Do you really believe that with Obama in office you will have the freedom online as you do today or freedom to meet. Obama’s thugs have 1)training camps 2)Truth Squad in MO 3) Legal action against NRA for ads 4) legal action in Chicago against a radio station 5) volunteers are told to get in our faces, signs banned at rally in VA ——all this in about 1 month without power. 24 months with Presidential power what controls on all of us will there be? 2 years or 4 years it will be bad and maybe unable to be reversed.
