Archbishop criticizes Kulongoski on abortion rights fundraiser

by The Associated Press
Tuesday September 30, 2008, 2:34 PM

John G. Vlazny, Archbishop of Portland, walks away from the Dambana, The Filipino Shrine at the Grotto, last Sunday following a dedication ceremony. Saint San Lorenzo Ruiz is honored there.

SALEM -- Archbishop John Vlazny is criticizing Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Catholic, for playing host to an abortion rights fundraiser Friday night in Portland.

Vlazny, head of the Archdiocese of Portland, said it's an embarrassment and a scandal for Catholics that Kulongoski is hosting the event two days before the church conducts its annual "Respect Life" mass in Portland to show opposition to abortion.

"For a Catholic governor to host an event of this sort seems a deliberate dissent from the teachings of the church," Vlazny said in a statement today.

Kulongoski is a longtime supporter of a woman's right to choose an abortion.

“The archbishop is the governor’s pastor, and he has only respect and admiration for the archbishop,” Kulongoski spokeswoman Anna Richter Taylor said. “They obviously disagree on the issue of choice.”

Kulongoski and his wife, Mary Oberst, are the honorary hosts of Friday night’s fundraising dinner for NARAL Pro Choice Oregon. U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., is among those scheduled to speak. The event is to be held at a Portland hotel.

Kulongoski and Wyden are among those who need to be un-elected/kicked out of office.

Dear Salvation,

“Not sure how much I can post of an AP story”

I believe that the rule is the title and the first two sentences.

Admin Mod - you may wish to edit to bring this in accord to the AP rule.

From Lifenews.com. link to audio at bottom: Washington, DC -- The Knights of Columbus...has started airing a radio ad that urges Catholics to vote pro-life. The 30-second radio spot encouraging people to "vote pro-life" in the November elections begins running on radio stations around the United States today....

ad features the sound of an unborn baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks. The voice of a woman says, "Listening to this makes me wonder - why would anyone question that her life has begun?" It concludes with the words, "Vote your heart. Vote Pro Life..."

The presidential election features a stark contrast between Barack Obama, who favors abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason and funded at taxpayer expense, and John McCain, who opposes abortions. The radio ad follows newspaper advertisements taking pro-abortion Barack Obama running mate Joe Biden to task for misrepresenting Catholic teaching on abortion and the beginning of human life.

Biden, who is Catholic, has a long pro-abortion voting record and came under fire for some recent statements. In a recent interview, Biden said he personally believes that human life begins at conception but wouldn't make public policy protecting unborn children from abortion based on those views....The ads will run in such leading newspapers as USA Today, the Washington Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and his hometown Delaware News Journal....

If one were excommunicated would it be done publicly or privately? Wouldn't it be instructive to the flock to see the results of purposeful disobedience of the tenets of the Church?
