I knew my mother Norma's 81st birthday would be poignant. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer six months earlier... and was not expected to survive the year.
But at least, I reasoned, she was being treated at the world-renowned Royal Marsden Hospital in West London. There she would not only receive the best possible treatment but be cared for by dedicated nurses accustomed to looking after the terminally ill...
But when I arrived on Horder Ward on the morning of my mother's birthday, she was distressed and disorientated. Instead of wearing the white linen pyjamas she had gone to bed in, she was wrapped in an NHS gown Gradually it emerged that she had woken up in the middle of the night in a pool of blood, terrified she was haemorrhaging. She had rung the bell next to her bed but there was no response.

The death of Daniel James, the 23-year-old rugby player who visited a Swiss euthanasia clinic last month, is the most appalling burden his parents will ever have to bear, whether or not they are prosecuted, and whether or not they are sent to prison for what they did on his behalf.
They decided to believe him when he said that after he was paralysed in a scrum his life was of no value to him, and that he would prefer death. It was not a sudden decision but one taken over many months, during which he had shown, by attempting suicide, that he was in deadly earnest. They made a deliberate moral choice, and carried it out in what must have been an agonising journey to Switzerland. Their courage has been enormous; but it would be hard to deny that they acted unlawfully.
"We will not be silent.
We are your bad conscience.
The White Rose will give you no rest."

This is how the culture of death moves toward cultural hegemony: The first step is to claim that killing (which is descriptive and accurate in that it means "to end life") will be reserved for the very rare case. But as soon as that premise is accepted, the acceptable category of killable people steadily increases.
Now in a tragic case in the UK, we see that very process in action. An athlete who became paralyzed and subsequently suicidal, was taken by his parents to Switzerland for an assisted suicide.

European Protestants met in Vienna last week for a consultation to begin the process of drawing up a common position on euthanasia.
The Specialist Group on Ethics of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe and other Protestant experts on the subject of euthanasia are looking at existing position papers from CPCE member churches to help draw up the common statement.
Group coordinator, Dr Dieter Heidtmann said, The positions of the churches are based on the same values and convictions, but on individual questions they arrive at different results. . . .

Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- Leading pro-abortion groups in Washington have taken the somewhat unusual of step of endorsing a ballot measure that would make the state the second to legalize assisted suicide. A leading pro-life advocate says he's not surprised the pro-abortion movement has linked up with euthanasia advocates.
Calling it an "important" vote to "promote progress in Washington" Planned Parenthood of Washington emailed its supporters a copy of a voting guide it compiled along with other liberal groups in the state.
The names of the groups endorsing a specific candidate or ballot issue are listed, and NARAL is indicated as endorsing the assisted suicide measure....

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- As many as 200,000 pro-life students at 4,000 schools in 22 countries plan to take part in the fifth annual Pro-life Day of Silent Solidarity on Tuesday. Sponsored by the pro-life group Stand True, the event has awakened the consciences of millions of teenagers and college students to the reality of abortion.
Bryan Kemper, president of the group, tells LifeNews.com that students in the U.S. and other nations will hear a clear pro-life message even though thousands of pro-life students will take a vow of silence to speak up for unborn children.
The students will wear red tape over their mouths or red armbands to show their support for protecting women and children from abortion....

MELBOURNE, Australia, October 21, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A prominent Melbourne doctor has written that, contrary to popular belief, most organ donations take place before the donor is actually dead. He argues that the vague criterion of "brain death" has blinded potential donors to the fact that their organs are often harvested while they are still alive.
Pediatric intensive care specialist Dr. James Tibballs published his controversial views in the Journal of Law and Medicine earlier this month, calling upon medical institutions to review their organ harvesting guidelines to ensure that donors know that they may be volunteering to surrender their life on the operating table.
Tibballs points out that current medical practices usually contravene the law, which state that a donor must display irreversible cessation of all functions of their brain or of blood circulation in order to be eligible for the surgery. Australian doctors, however, usually wait only two minutes after a heart has stopped beating before giving the green light for harvesting, said the pediatric specialist.
But Tibballs says two minutes is inadequate time to determine whether the loss of circulation is "irreversible." The two minutes criterion was established purely for utilitarian reasons, he says - because waiting longer could threaten the viability of donated organs...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Barack Obama running mate Joe Biden is coming under scrutiny for a new interview in which he says he thinks Catholics can support abortion. Biden also comes under fire for misstating the effect of Roe v. Wade and denying that it allows virtually unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy.
In the interview with the Delaware News Journal, Biden talks about how he can reconcile his pro-abortion views with his Catholic faith.
"It's very difficult," Biden says. "I was raised as a Catholic, I'm a practicing Catholic, and I'm totally at home with the Catholicism that I was raised in and this whole culture of social responsibility."

Mary Anne Burke's voice was full of emotion as she left her 31st message of the night, this one for a parishioner of the Church of Immaculate Conception.
"I'm a member of Our Lady Help of Christians in Abington," she said, "calling with a request that you support McCain-Palin on one nonnegotiable issue. The issue is life -- life from birth to death. Hopefully, prayerfully, you will consider it."
