DFL U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken has moved into his first solid lead over incumbent Republican Norm Coleman, according to a new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll.
The survey, conducted Tuesday through Thursday by Princeton Survey Research Associates International among 1,084 likely Minnesota voters, shows Franken leading Coleman 43 to 34 percent. Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley is supported by 18 percent of respondents.
Frankens lead is outside the polls margin of sampling error, plus or minus 3.7 points.
For Coleman, there is little good news in the poll. The number of voters who view him unfavorably continues to grow, the number who see him favorably is falling, and his job-approval rating has slipped to 38 percent his lowest ever in the Minnesota Poll.
Coleman led Franken by four points in last months Minnesota Poll.
The new results stand in contrast to the findings of a SurveyUSA poll, commissioned by KSTP-TV and also conducted this week, that shows Coleman with a 10-point lead over Franken, 43 to 33 percent.

I call total BS on this poll. There is now way that Dean Barkley has that much of a pull in that poll. I went riding my bike from the VERY liberal Midtown area of South Minneapolis to the somewhat conservative Hopkins yesterday en route to play hockey and I saw many Franken signs in Saint Louis Park with a few Coleman signs peppered in, with only one, count them one, Dean Barkley sign.
A car or bike ride from my end of town to the inner ring suburbs is a good barometer of how the canidates are doing. And so far, Coleman is holding up with Franken in the most liberal areas of the Twin Cities.
This poll also forgot the Saint Paul factor. Saint Paul, Minnesota’s second largest city, still remembers the GREAT job Norm Coleman did as mayor of that town, taking Saint Paul from just being Minneapolis’ largest suburb to a major national city of its own outright. Because of what he’s done for Saint Paul, he will maybe pull 25-35% of the electorate in Saint Paul (Which is phenomenal for any Republican). No way Frankenstein is up that much in that poll.
Coleman’s ahead and he will probably demolish Franken. Nobody likes that goon in Minnesota other than your typical partisans.
A traditional Republican’s defense posture is one that is defensive in nature, not nation building in third world muslim hell holes.
A neoconservative is a pro-war liberal. There hasn’t been room for him in the modern day Democrat Party so he elbowed his way into the two Bush administrations. The result is likely a Obama presidency (though I hope I am wrong).
Okay, not you can go back to sipping your Kool-Aid.
One shows Franken speaking at a podium, flailing his arms violently, practically foaming at the mouth. It’s like he’s having convulsions. Another exposes Franken as a disgusting pornography writer, joking about raping women, then describes Franken once physically attacked a protester. Another ad shows him saying, “I hate those right wing mother*******, bleeped of course. Another Franken quote in the ad, “You are wrong, man, and you have to apologize!!” Another ad shows him saying he wants to raise taxes, but then didn’t pay $70,000 in workers comp taxes when he ran the Error America radio network. He had to go back and re-pay those back taxes when they were revealed. The general theme is that Franken is unfit for office. The ads effectively cut Franken down as not being “Minnesota Nice.” Coleman’s other ads show him to be the careful, serious, thoughtful person that he is, and the contrast is amazing.
I have personally met Norm Coleman several times, and he is a very impressive and likeable individual. I can’t see how anyone who has viewed these ads could vote for Franken. He is truly a scary person.
Thank you very much.
Go, Norm!
Interesting. So, your assertion is that traditional republicans and independents will not vote for McCain because of Iraq?
Furthermore, you assert that pro-war liberals have no place in Reagan’s coalition?
43 to 34???
Yeah. That’s really believable. {sarc.}
Exactly, Coleman’s not sweating Stewart Smiley.
Independence for Minnesota might not be such a bad idea...their electoral votes almost always go to the Democrat, and if they left the Union the Big Ten conference could get back to having ten teams.
No, neoconservatives are all those damn Jews that control the Bush administration. Everybody knows that.
Yea, but then the other football teams would lose an easy victory every year.
The Star & Sickle usually waits until election eve to report that the Democrat has surged ahead of the Republican.
I thought Wolf Blitzer did that. I remember 2004 when every network/cable channel had given Bush Iowa and New Mexico, but CNN refused to until almost all precincts had reported. It was a sick display.
The reason I went back into the military during Reagan was because he was so willing to fight and he was projecting power everywhere.
There may be someone here that remembers as I do, how even in 1981 we knew that 1984 to 1986 was going to be a high risk period, because if the Soviet Union didn’t move before it was too late then they would have missed their window of opportunity, because by the late 80s their best shot would have passed for any foreseeable future.
Ask the GIs that were in Europe how tense things were in the mid 80s.
I joined in 87. Pop was COB of a boomer. I recall it rather vividly.
We had alot of “neoconservatives” standing with us against the Soviet Union. It would be if a shame they are no longer welcome to support GOP candidates.
Their “easy victory” eluded Indiana University today.
Every election, The RED Star always do their propaganda poll when they think the time is right.
McCain is losing by 18% in the same poll.
