Sarah Palin's opposition to bar crackdown surprised some (Trib complains she's not a religious nut)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 10/5/08 | Andrew Zajac and Bob Secter

Sarah Palin may be the heroine of the religious right, but Rev. Gene Straatmeyer vividly recalls a public run-in he once had with the now Republican vice presidential candidate over clergy support for a crackdown on bars. It was August 1996, just weeks before Palin's election as mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska. And Straatmeyer, a local Presbyterian minister and head of two church coalitions, testified at a City Council hearing for a measure to shorten the traditional 5 a.m. last call by a few hours.

The liberal media just doesn’t really have a clue. Now they expect her to rally against bars? That’s not who she is. She’s normal, and they don’t understand normal.

This is called “rational thought”. You can hold religion in your heart and accept and believe that your religious beliefs don’t belong imposing on the freedom of others.

That is an idea the left just cannot grasp.

Darn, you beat me to it. Actually, the Left believes the opposite--they want to impose their preferences on us.

The horror the horror the horror. She kept the bars open.
The woman has no shame!! /S She has my vote!

‘A dry martini,’ he said. ‘One. In a deep champagne goblet.’ ‘Oui, monsieur.’

‘Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?’

‘Certainly monsieur.’ The barman seemed pleased with the idea

Another "Sarah Palin is a bad Christian" opinion piece disguised as a news article.

Can't you just hear the Chicago Trib editor saying, "Hey, I know this piece amounts to nothing, but we have to do SOMETHING to damage Caribou Barbie's reputation with her feeble minded Jesus-freak followers."

Bet you learned that here on Free Republic and not in the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post or the NYT? Not much delving into the Chicago records of one Barack Hussein Obama from the liberal media, is there. It’s like the media all want to be the counter to conservative talk radio instead of maintaining their professional journalistic integrity.

Apparently they left something out of the story. The reporters write:
John Hartrick, one of two council members at the time to back Stambaugh's initiative, said he was struck by the contrast between Palin's vote and the strong anti-drinking tenets of her Pentecostal denomination. It "just bugged the devil out of me," said Hartrick, who now lives in Salem, Ark.
According to Wikepedia, Hartrick is the man she defeated in 1992 when she first ran for the City Council

I am from the hills of Southeastern Ohio. We are all Reagan Democrats. Most of us have Christian beliefs. ....and most of us drink.

LOL

The Chicago Tribune is so out of touch.

“Never been to AK but 5:00 am is late by Los Angles standards!”

I imagine that when it gets sorta’ dark in Anchorage around 3 am in the summer it might make a bit more sense. Lots of folks up there will say “Sleep? I’ll sleep this winter!”

We have a PRESIDENTIAL candidate with ties to radical terrorists like William Ayers, we have Tony Rezko who did his deals with the Dem governor. We have the Rev. Wright and his “black liberation theology” and a church that Barack attended for 20 years, and they want to talk about a dispute about the hours a bar was open for business in Alaska. This is just unbelievable. And she is NOT running for President! I am appalled at the Obama media machine that has absolutely NO INTEREST in the things that should concern them about Barack Obama and yet they fall all over themselves over a silly story like this.

Given the extreme changes in sunlight in Alaska over the year I am left wondering what the point of moving a closing time would be. To her this might be less of a religious or drunk driving issue than an Alaskan issue.

You are correct, my friend. Free Republic has become my source of any and all news/current events. Nothing compares. Whether the news is good or bad for conservatives, you will at least find it all here and each story has plenty of commentary to help check with your own understanding of the issue. I still use other on-line sources, but none compare to the speed, scope, and fact checking of what you get here.
