Mayor Bloomberg touts anti-smoking plan in Germany, admits shame caused him to quit
NY Daily sNews ^ | October 5th 2008 | Adam Lisberg and Grant Junkie

Drinking beats smoking, Mayor Bloomberg said Sunday at a beer-soaked street fair in the heart of Germany's capital.

After scooping up an anti-smoking award, the mayor bragged that New Yorkers who smoke are now ashamed to huddle outside bars with cigarettes, while non-smokers buy more food and drinks inside.

"It turns out that it is economically good for the bar and restaurant business," Bloomberg said. "It's certainly good for everybody except the funeral parlors."

The mayor was in Berlin to accept an award from the European Lung Foundation for his anti-smoking crusade.

Along with pushing through the smoking ban, Bloomberg has made hundreds of millions of dollars in donations to stop smoking in the developing world and to encourage other municipalities to emulate New York's policy.

Bloomberg acknowledged that he used to smoke two decades ago and said humiliation helped him kick the habit.

"Friends of mine sort of looked down on me. It was embarrassing that I was doing something that can only be described as self-destructive and not very smart," the mayor said. "It's relatively easy to stop, and once you stop, you're going to feel so much superior to those who do smoke that there's instant gratification."

At a street fair near the Brandenburg Gate, Bloomberg tested his lung function at a health exhibit and his score came up perfectly normal for a 66-year-old man, he said.

He later made clear that while he gave up smoking, he remains a fan of drinking, and suggested he wished he could buy booze on the street back home.

Apparently there is no shame in King Bloomberg being an egotistical nanny state, paternalistic bullly and douchebag.

CALORIE COUNTING ADS HIT NEW YORK CITY SUBWAYS
Health Department Aims To Remind Commuters About Healthy Eating Habits

October 7, 2008

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/07/health/main4507205.shtml

Craving a burrito with sour cream and guacamole? What if you knew it had more than half the calories you should eat in a day?

The city Health Department is expanding its healthy-eating campaign with subway ads that say most adults should limit themselves to 2,000 calories day.

Posters that appeared Monday in about 1,000 subway cars provide calorie counts for several menu items - like 470 for a giant apple bran muffin or 1,170 for a chicken burrito with toppings.

The three-month ad campaign is intended to build on the city’s new regulation requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus. Officials are betting people will eat fewer calories if they know how many they should consume.

“Small changes in your choices can make a big difference in your calorie intake,” assistant health commissioner Dr. Lynn Silver said.

The ads are in 20 percent of city subway cars.

The calorie-posting rule applies to chain restaurants that have 15 or more locations nationwide. It took effect in May, but legal action delayed enforcement until July.

The 2,000-calorie figure is an average. Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations vary by age, gender and level of activity. Men can consume more calories than women without gaining weight, and 20-year-olds more than 60-year-olds.

New York City’s calorie-count regulation has paved the way for similar laws elsewhere. California last week became the first state to require restaurant chains to reveal how many calories are in their standard menu items.

Natalia Kaplan, of Queens, said she hadn’t noticed the poster directly behind her on an E train featuring that 1,170-calorie burrito, but she approved of the campaign.

“It makes you aware,” said Kaplan, who said she pays close attention to the calorie information fast-food chains are now required to provide.

“If I go to Dunkin’ Donuts, I look at the calories, and I try to take the least-calorie doughnut,” she said.

In my unofficial surveys of bars after various states enacted smoking bans, my assessment is that patrons have found lots and lots of reasons (e.g., cigarettes, cigars, pipe, etc.) to find other places to drink. I found this remarkably true in suburban Chicago during a Bears game. A bar which was always jammed during a Bears game had at most 20 patrons vs. capacity of about 130. Cincinnati - same thing. Florida - same thing.

This crap about “no impact” is just that - crap!

According to Daddy Bloomberg, drinking beats smoking, huh?

I would rather be around a smoker than a drinker ANY DAY!

As far as calorie-counting goes, if you have to worry about how many calories in a donut, maybe you shouldn't have the donut.

The nanny staters may be a lot of things but they are not stupid.

They know damn well that their crusade will kill local bar and restaurant owners.

They don’t care. The goal is to coerce smokers to quit.

How about they just cut out the lies and social engineering and just ban tobacco?

NO Shame at all!! You cannot dare smoke, or eat transfat, even though this is America and it is your own body and not the governments place nor do they have any say, so far. BUT when it comes to killing your baby, your body is magically in the category of privacy and you have a RIGHT to do that!

Absolutely NO sense. Can't put things into your body without govt making laws to ban, tax and fine it, but a woman puts herself at risk, and puts a baby in her body, she has the govts support for killing it.

What would you do with me? I drink and smoke. After watching this debate and seeing my country head towards socialism you can’t blame anyone for drinking.

“I would rather be around a smoker than a drinker ANY DAY!”

Just the other day I was looking at a pretty lady, and I was pondering, would I rather be around her when she is drinking or smoking?
