Mumbles makes for some good in-tain-ment
By Howie Carr | Sunday, October 12, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Welcome to Mumbles’ Magical Mystery Tour. Forget the stock-market crash and the election - today you’re traveling with Hizzoner, the mayor of the city of Boston.

As always, all dialogue guaranteed verbatim. Check it out for yourself at bostonherald.com. This is 100 percent real. Nobody could make this stuff up.

We begin with Mumbles’ reading, sort of, of a mayoral proclamation. Remember, the mayor is from Hyde Paaaakh, and he pronounces some words . . . differently. For instance, “debut.” Some swell from Ward 5 might say “day-bue.” Mumbles knows better. Debut is pronounced “de-beaut.”

Let’s go straight to the audio.

“And so, uh . . . Whereas New Kids on the Block has in-tained millions around the w-globe . . . Whereas in 2008, New Kids on the Block has roonited and released their first album in 14 years, “The Block,” which d-de-beaut-ed at No. 1 on the Mill- Millboard top a hundred pop album charts.”

See, anybody can de-butte at number one on Billboard. In the music industry what really counts is Millboard.

At his next stop, the mayor is giving out some scholarships:

“You represent the diversitive of the people of our city, yet you all share a common commitment to education.”

You know the old PC saying, “Celebrate diversitive.”

Norm Levanthal is a very rich guy who’s having a sea walk dedicated to him. Mumbles, who would appear at the opening of an envelope, and often does, was of course present, if incoherent.

“When others sees problems Norman sees possibilities. When others sees, said we can’t, Norman said we must. . . . Norman’s great work has touched many commas - corners of our vibrant city.”

Not to mention, many semi-colons and exclamation points.

Nothing like a playground opening, right Mumbles?

“The sidewalks around this park has just been approved by the private industry council - ah, ah, private industry commission, I’m sorry . . . The private, ummm, the public improvement commission has improved them.”

Let’s cut by the Fenway Health Center - “This is about the steak economic stimulus package.”

Sirloin or tenderloin, ribeye or Porterhouse?

And finally, the mayor appears at the 4th annual book bag giveaway and resource fair.

“It’s so important you take that time out of your busy schedule to read each child in our city for 20 minutes.”

Remember: Read each child in the city. Personally, I’d rather read Mumbles’ memoirs. What a yarn that’ll be . . . a bestseller for sure. I predict it de-beauts at number one, at least on the Millboard charts.

Hey Sarah Palin, bring some Sun-unu to New England
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, October 15, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com

Welcome to New England, Sarah Palin.

Two words for you before today’s events in New Hampshire: John Sununu.

I know, your campaign manager says you and Gramps McCain are within striking distance, but I don’t buy it and neither do you, even if you can’t admit it. I was in North Carolina this weekend - ad-wise on TV it was all Barack, all the time, even during the Pats game Sunday night.

Nationally, you were outspent on radio last week by a 5-to-1 margin. That’s brutal.

You do a nice job, governor, of keeping the illusion alive, but sometimes it slips out, like with Rush Limbaugh yesterday, when you said, “I’ve got nothing to lose here, Rush.”

So the GOP’s real plan now is, hang onto 41 Senate seats to minimize the damage the Democrats can do over the next few years. Sununu in the Senate is crucial. Jeanne Shaheen is an empty pantsuit. When Chuckie Schumer tells her to jump, her only question will be, “How high?”

I implore you, Sarah, talk up Sununu. Until two weeks ago, when the market collapsed, I thought he was pulling away. But this environment is brutal. Pat Caddell, the pollster, is right - Barack Obama is the luckiest pol ever. His pals at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac poison the economy with bad paper, yet they reap the benefits of the crashed 401(k)s.

Sununu tried to do something about Freddie and Fannie. Who knew? Sununu. But now he’s behind in the polls. Tell everybody in New Hampshire not to get down, and be sure to get to the polls Nov. 4.

Give Sununu a big hug. And by the way, why not bring First Dude in one stop early, at Laconia. You’re going to be at Weirs Lake, for goodness sake. Have Todd ride in on a Harley - a hog.

Tomorrow you’re in Maine, in the 2nd Congressional District. We know how that works - if you win northern Maine, you can grab an electoral vote. Probably won’t matter, but never say never, right?

Sen. Susan Collins is another Republican who might be the 41st vote to stop Barack Obama from realizing his dream of, as he puts it, “spreading the wealth around.” She’s ahead in the polls, but this year you never can tell.

Sarah, you probably don’t know much about Bangor, but it’s not that different from Alaska. A few years back, a woman got shot in her backyard by a hunter while she was hanging laundry. The hunter said he mistook her for a white-tailed deer because she was wearing white gloves. The nimrod was acquitted.

Two words for Bangor, Sarah: moose recipes.

Give ’em hell, Sarah!

I hope so — and I wish Howie wouldn’t be such a downer on his prospects; it’s counterproductive, just discouraging people! It’s not as if he couldn’t have gotten a great column out of Deval and his hypothetical “cuts”!

Friday column ping
Hey Deval, time to spread the wealth
By Howie Carr | Friday, October 17, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Here’s a suggestion for Gov. Deval Patrick: Ante up.

Stop taking your state paycheck.

And return the Cadillac too. Get its heating fixed, and then bring back the Crown Vic.

Why not set a good example for your minions in state government, Deval? Don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk.

Hey, Mitt Romney didn’t take a dime in pay for four years. Ditto, his lieutenant governor, Muffy Healey. And Deval, don’t you dare cry poor-mouth - you just got a $1.35 million book advance from Random House, you got $2 million in severance from Coca-Cola and God knows how much from Texaco, not to mention whatever stock options they handed out.

And then of course there was your part-time gig on the board of Long Beach Pawnshop Inc., d/b/a Ameriquest, that subprime-mortgage company that you have admitted paid you more than $100,000 a year.

Your wife is a partner in a major downtown Boston law firm. You own a huge spread in the Berkshires - 10 rooms plus five bathrooms, connected to a carriage house with three more rooms and two bathrooms.

I know what you’re thinking, Deval: It’s not fair you’re being asked to give up your paycheck.

It’s not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they’ve got a chance for success, too . . . When you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.

Re-read that last paragraph, Deval. It’s a quote, and I’ll bet you can figure out who said it first. That’s right, it was your pal, Barack Obama. Those were his words to Joe the Plumber in Ohio last weekend. Surely you’re not going to tell us that you’re not for spreading the wealth around.

It’s good for everybody.

Repeated calls were made yesterday to Gov. Patrick’s spokesman, asking whether Deval was going to set a good example by foregoing his $140,535-a-year salary, at least for the time being. Those calls were not returned, at least to me.

Earlier this week, Deval said of the state’s cutbacks, “There is real cause for concern, but not panic.”

Earth to Deval: nobody out here is panicked, at least not about “shuttered museums” and longer lines at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. I don’t even think the hacks are that panicked, because they know they’re not going anywhere.

Not one layoff in the judicial branch - that tells those of us in the Dreaded Private Sector all we need to know. The people in state government who work may be concerned, but they’re always the last hired and the first fired.

Deval, are you a straight-talker, or are you one of those do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do phony-baloney fakers?

Do the right thing, Governor. Give the money back. Spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody. Just ask Barack Obama.

Here was Howie’s column in the Thu paper. I didn’t see the paper till late and didn’t realize it was in there! So,
catching up...

Tardy Joe the Plumber fixes leaking ship
By Howie Carr | Thursday, October 16, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com

Where was Joe the Plumber six weeks ago when John McCain really needed him?

Finally, McCain had someone to play off of, the guy from Toledo who figured out that his taxes are going up under Barack Obama. Joe the Plumber ran into Obama and confronted him the other day, and Obama brushed him off by saying that he just wants to “spread the wealth around.”

You know, like the War of Poverty. That war is over, as you know. Poverty won.

Barack Obama, the next president, couldn’t wriggle out of his videotaped remark about “spreading the wealth around.” Trying to explain away his crackpot scheme, Barack was finally reduced to name-dropping: “It is true my friend Warren Buffett can afford to pay more - ”

“We’re talking,” McCain interrupted, “about Joe the Plumber.”

It was about time McCain took it to him. Actually, it’s probably too late, especially after another disastrous day on Wall Street. But at least McCain got in a few licks.

“Look,” Barack was lecturing, in his usual snotty Harvard Law School manner, “nobody likes taxes.”

“Nobody likes taxes?” McCain said. “Then let’s not raise anybody’s taxes.”

Yo, Joe the Plumber. This Bud’s for you!

Then Obama tried for about the millionth time to join him at the hip with George Bush, and McCain finally lowered the boom.

“Sen. Obama,” he said, “I am not President Bush. If you wanted to run against President Bush you should have run four years ago.”

McCain sputtered a few times, but he was close to the top of his game. The way you know is, he didn’t say “my friends” until 10.

Obama, trying to run out the clock, smiled condescendingly when McCain brought up ACORN, which he sloughed off as merely a “community organization” that “apparently” engaged in some shenanigans. Apparently? His “only” connection was to represent them in court.

As for Bill Ayers, the trust-fund terrorist, Obama trotted out his usual response. Why, the man is nothing more than a “professor of education” who committed a few “despicable” acts “40 years ago.”

Too bad McCain didn’t get off the obvious comeback - the only difference between Bill Ayers and Tim McVeigh is Ayers failed.

But the best stuff last night came when McCain addressed Joe the Plumber directly, as in, “I’ll keep your taxes low.” And even better, talking about Obama’s tax plans: “Joe, you’re rich.”

You may be rich, Joe, but unless something changes fast, you’re going to be on your way to the poor house come Nov. 4.

Howie Friday show ping.
According to today’s Herald blog: “In addition to the names previously mentioned in this blog, a producer for the Howie Carr show was canned.”

The two producers I know of are Nancy “Sandy” Shack and “Happy” (don’t know his real name;
Howie jokes with him about his side job at a gas station)

Just got the WRKO Insiders (or whatever) email: Reese is out; they’re running Laura Ingraham in that slot. Nothing about anything else. (I thought Finneran was the one with the disappointing ratings — and I bet he’s a lot more expensive than Reese!)

Hokey Wolfe says:
“In this very difficult economic time, we have had to make some very hard decisions about our programming, and as such, I would like to let you know that we have replaced Reese Hopkins with The Laura Ingraham Show in the WRKO lineup effective immediately. You can hear Laura’s show from 10a to noon Monday through Friday. Laura is an outstanding broadcaster whose show is among the most successful in the nation and I know she’ll be a tremendous addition for us.

“Reese Hopkins did a fabulous job while he was here. Unfortunately, we are living through an unprecedented financial crisis and as I indicated earlier, that has caused us to look at all aspects of our operation and make some tough choices. I wish Reese the very best in all of his future endeavors.

“I’m extremely grateful to all of you for your support and dedication to WRKO and I will continue to do everything possible to provide you, our loyal audience, with the very best talk programming in Boston.

“Thank you very much.

“Jason Wolfe
Vice President AM Programming & Operations WEEI 850 AM & WRKO 680 AM”
