(10-13) 17:42 PDT SAN MATEO -- An intoxicated teenage driver ran a red light in San Mateo this morning and broadsided a taxicab, killing the driver, then fled as flames engulfed his car where two other teenagers were trapped, police said.

Police were able to pull the badly injured youths from the burning Volkswagen Jetta on El Camino Real near Hillsdale Shopping Center, but there was nothing they could do for the cabdriver, 48-year-old Michael Earl Prescott of Redwood City. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

prolly a stolen vehicle, out on a joyride then they ditch it. Or it catches fire and they ditch it.

You guessed it: The most permissive area in the country. Little punk probably won’t get away with this (though they do teach kids to expect very lenient treatment). A drunk driver killed a buddy of mine back in the 80s. Went to prison on a 2nd degree murder rap.

I'm pretty sure he'll discover that it really isn't. This case has "Make an example of this asswipe" stamped all over it.

I meant to say a drunk driver killed a buddy of mine IN SAN MATEO county back in the 80s, and still went to prison for it. They’re pretty tough on drunk driving offenders. So that’s encouraging for this case.

I used to live in San Mateo. It’s a split-personality town. On the “wrong” side of the tracks are lower-income areas (by Bay Area standards), and the uphill side of town is where the multi-million dollar custom homes are located, just next to Hillsborough. San Mateo was once on a “top-ten most expensive cities in the U.S.” list.

Sure has all TK’s attributes, doesn’t he?... Cowardice, contempt for others, drunkenness, callousness, looks out for number one and has an exaggerated sense of entitlement, etc. Guess now we’ll find out whether or not he’s as well-connected as a Kennedy.

And there are FReepers who want the legal drinking age lowered.

Maybe the legal driving age should be raised to 21 with qualification requirements like they have for pilots.

Actually, the latter, coupled with very stiff minimum sentences would be enough.

Killing one person with a vehicle while intoxicated should get you life.

Killing multiple people with a vehicle while intoxicated should get you the chair.

Operating a vehicle while intoxicated should get you five years.

That is pretty much true for most towns in the bay area.
Grew up in the East Bay Ghetto ran like hell two weeks before I turned 18 and never looked back.
