Doug Kmiec went to mass, as usual, at Our Lady of Malibu on Tuesday morning. Then he drove up the hill to his office to talk to me by phone about how a Republican Catholic opposed to abortion could endorse Barack Obama. You may recognize Kmiec's name. He teaches at Pepperdine University in California now, but he's a Chicago guy.

I believe that you are right, although Romney was not a dove, after all. One more weird incident in this weird election. Thank the Lord that the 2012 election campaign will start in 3 weeks and one day.
According to the Pope and the Bishops they are mistaken, and are endangering their immortal souls.
No votive candles, no statues or pictures of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin, or any saints. Try to find a confessional.
Of course I've never been a big fan of the Novus Ordo, but what is one to do?
At least anti-baby killing is preached upon by the priest, but many fail to listen.
There is a guide available for practical, practicing Catholics available in respect to voting with our consciences.
Our Lady of Malibu is appropriately sacrilegous in the case of Kmiec.
B. Hussein Obama can count on the Massachusetts ‘Catholics’ to cast their votes for him, but with ACORN who needs them?
He’ll go to confession AFTER he pulls the lever for Hussein Obama.
(I had to give up, but if this obamanation is elected I will remind him in a year or so when many of our Christian brothers are in shackles being led off to the slave market in downtown Toledo.)
A bogus confession is just another mortal sin of sacrilege.
Yes, there is a type of Catholic--some of them very traditional in their outlook--for whom the Iraq War is everything. They have, for whatever reason, made the War the only issue that counts. At bottom they are one-issue voters in the true sense. They are very confused and somewhat irrational in their justification for this stance. Kmiec's rationales for supporting Obama are seriously laughable.
Sadly, people like Kmiec remind me of certain religous folks who lived behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. These folks tied themselves in knots to prove that communism was compatible with the Gospel. They look as foolish now as Kmiec will look in years to come.
But don’t you have to be sorry for you sin to actually be forgiven?
Teaches in CA and is a “Chicago guy” that sums it up. We have seen a lot of party before country. This guy seems to be party before God. Fortunately for him his Catholic mother obviously didn’t believe in abortion.
You forgot Pelosi in that group. Doug can now join them and forge their own kind of Catholism ....which it looks as though they have at that Our Lady of Malibu church.
I knew many people like them growing up. Faithful on Sunday, receiving Communion, then forgetting their faith the other six days of the week.
Thanks to your link. It needs to be spelled out.
The Obama campaign routinely identifies Kmiec as [f]ormer Reagan legal counsel and head of the Office of Legal Counsel for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Those descriptions are accurate but, insofar as they are meant to suggest that Kmiec was a close adviser to Reagan and Bush, misleading. Kmiec headed DOJs Office of Legal Counsel for a grand total of a few months at the end of the Reagan administration (after Chuck Cooper and most of his deputies had left the office) and the beginning of the Bush 41 administration (before President Bush was able to replace him). Someone familiar with OLC at the time tells me that its unlikely that Kmiec ever met personally with Reagan to provide him legal advice (and that if any such meetings did occur, they would have been very few).

Another Obama exaggeration...go figure.
I’ve been around for many a year. I recall the days when the mass was celebrated in Latin, meatless Fridays, the covering of female heads (and other body parts)in church, the use of rosary beads and many other rituals that have gone by the wayside. Since not participating anymore, I am nonetheless shocked by the new practices including that silly Kumbaya kiss of peace and the shaking of hands with your pew-mates.
The wrath of God used to be instilled in us in the confessional. Statues were revered just like the ones used in processionals during the neighborhood feasts. That’s all missing. The Catholic church has joined the ranks of all other politically correct institutions which are mediated by what’s trendy and culturally acceptable.
Our Lady Of Malibu sounds like a Saturday Night Live sketch. Unfortunately for the faithful, it’s real.
