Obama supporters fear race may bring candidate down

For supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama it is a nightmare scenario -- his apparent lead in the battle for the White House suddenly evaporates on Election Day. The cause? Race.

As Republican rival John McCain celebrates victory, it emerges that a small but decisive percentage of white voters who had declared to opinion pollsters they supported Obama actually chose differently in the privacy of the ballot booth.

With opinion surveys making Obama the favorite over McCain less than three weeks before the November 4 election, attention has turned to the question of how many white Americans might be lying to pollsters about their willingness to vote for a black president.

The phenomenon is known as the "Bradley effect," after Tom Bradley, an African American who narrowly lost the 1982 California governor's election despite leading in polls.

His defeat surprised observers who concluded many white voters had not been honest about their intentions. Ever since, pollsters have tried to factor in the Bradley effect in elections featuring black candidates.

Those concerns weighed heavily on John Estep as he canvassed for Obama last week in the mainly white town of St. Bernard, Ohio, where he was once mayor.

"They will say in a poll, or say on the porch, 'I'll vote for Obama.' But I question how many will stick with a person of color when they pull that (voting booth) curtain," said Estep.

I’m telling you, my blood chilled when my daughter told me that. And what’s worse is all of these kids have been friends for years. Small town and whole county goes to one set of schools set by grades. So they’ve all gone to school together since kindergarten. Actually having Obama as a candidate is driving what progress they have made apart!

The writer has it exactly backwards (assuming this happens.) Obamas lead won't disappear suddenly because of race, because he never had a lead. What disappeared is the appearance of a lead created by a fear of many whites of being perceived as racist.

I will explain.

All of us who are voting for McCain we are voting for him or against Obama based on the issue such as economy, war, supreme court justices, etc...

Obama is going to lose because 20% of the White democrats are not going to vote for a black person even if they are starving to death and this black person promises them 1 million dollar each. Now Obama is not just black for them but he belonged to a racist and anti-American church led by his mentor and spiritual leader Jeremiah Wright.

Obama cannot win when 20% of the white democrats are not voting for him.

It’s not his race, it’s his friends that are hateful.

“I don’t see race. People tell me I’m white, and I believe them, because I own a lot of Jimmy Buffett albums.”

The only race that is an issue in this race is whether or not the MSM will help Obama outrun his “checkered” past.

The Bradley effect is not about racism. It's about the fear of being labeled a racist. Everything you do or say can be construed as "racist" nowadays if you're white, and especially if you're conservative. The fact that these pollsters have your name and number when they call you up makes it even more unnerving to say you're voting against the black guy.

Even if it does lead to chaos right afterwards, it will still be better for McCain to win. One set of riots will be better than a whole four/eight years of tacitly encouraged riots.

And, for the record, I'd vote for this guy for Pres in a second.

I think true racism in any form is horrid. However, that is NOT what is going on in this campaign.

I will say, though, I don’t give a darn what brings this man down. As long as he never gets near the White House, I’m happy!

Take that, you DU lurking trolls!!!!!

If Obama wins and you begin to hear stuff on the radio about evil whites, get out and just run. Don’t even pretend that things will get better. They won’t and I for one am already trying to make provisional plans. You don’t want to end up like the Tutsis or the Jews.

If he is elected, anyone who values their life will be out by the end of the year when Obama is officially invested in as President. This guy is going to kill any whites he can get his hands on, except the ones he could use.

Just run. No shame in wanting to live.

The only reason BH is where he is his blackness. An equivalent white guy would never have gotten the job, so cry me a river when the flip side of the blackness coin beats BO.

I was going to write in a black guy, not Obama, but now a white woman has made me decide to vote for the white guy. I guess racist sexism has overwhelmed me.

If you are called, tell them that you are going to vote for Alan Keyes. I think that Alan is on the ballot, and if not, say you will write him in.

Oh, we can handle his thugs if he doesn’t win. They won’t have the power of the government behind them.

There is a LOT more to fear with these thugs having the government power behind them.

Yep, but it’s all the demrats have. I think they’ve emptied their quiver and have nothing left to throw at McCain/Palin in the closing three weeks.

The economy issue broke too soon and now everyone is just waiting for things to sort out and settle down. McCain has managed to avoid being tainted by it. In addition, the ACORN story has finally gotten some traction and is being reported in the MSM. This should open the door to revealing all the man’s relationships with commies, The Rev. Wright, My. Ayers and ad nauseum.

As so many of us have said, McCain had an opportunity to put the Marxist Onada out of the game in the first and second debates. Instead, he chose the “new tone” approach. Now he has another shot tonight. He has a responsibility to those who’ve contributed money and time to his campaign to slam dunk the Marxist Onada. This means he must do what ever it takes to demonstrate he really wants to be President of the United States. It’s hard to imagine this man still believes the MSM will ever tolerate—let alone like—him. Pubbies are innately evil and must be ignored or squashed.

However well McCain may be doing in the debate tonight, if I hear “bipartisan” or “I know how to.........” I’m gonna turn him off. Then I’m gonna fire up one of my old war movies, make some popcorn and enjoy the rest of my evening.

I’m wondering how many blacks are NOT voting for him but are afraid to say so publicly. I live in a predominently black middle class area and I have seen very few Obama signs. In 2004 there were tons of Kerry signs. They certainly have signs available to them. I have 2 McCain signs in my yard for about 2 weeks, only one stolen so far.
Also interestinly when I have gone to volunteer for phone time at the Rep headquarters here there have been some black volunteers. My answer to anyone who calls me racist for voting McCain is that the real racist attitude is to assume that a black person will vote for Obama simply because he is black.

It's the capital gains tax, people. The Dems go along with a lowering of the tax rates which encouraged people to put money into savings. Bingo, a treasury to be pounced upon. The Dems descend like Viking raiders on merry olde Englande to plunder the hapless locals, er, conscientious savers. Hahaha, the Dems think, those dummies in America, saving up a nice pot of funds that 'we Dems' can now get our hands on.
