Barack Obama, clarifying Joe Biden's statement that he will face an international crisis if elected, says his running mate "sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes."
The next administration will face international challenges regardless of who is elected president, Barack Obama said Wednesday, rebutting criticism of Joe Biden's statement over the weekend that the Democratic candidate will face a "generated crisis" if elected.
Obama said the key reason the next president will face such threats is because of the damaging policies of the past eight years, and he said he's confident his administration will meet such a test.
"Whoever is the next president is going to have to deal with a whole host of challenges internationally and ... a period of transition in a new administration is always one in which we have to be vigilant," Obama said in Richmond, Va., where he met with a panel of foreign policy and military luminaries.
"We have to be careful. We have to be mindful that as we pass the baton in this democracy that others don't take advantage of it -- that is true, whether it's myself or Senator McCain, it's been true throughout history."
Obama said such challenges would not be unique to an Obama administration, and he tried to re-articulate Biden's statement, suggesting his running mate did not express his point as tactfully as the campaign would have liked.
"I think that Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes," Obama said.
Biden made the comments over the weekend to two fundraising audiences, saying he expects that Obama will face an international challenge early in his presidency if he is elected on Nov. 4.

"Theres going to be a crisis come along on the 21st, 22nd of January which we don't even know about right now." - Colin Powells appearance on Meet the Press Sunday morning, October 19, 2008
This very unsettling.
“...Everything bad that happens in an Obama administration will not be Bushs fault.”
Bush may not have done everything right...but he got blamed for EVERYTHING....even acts of God like hurricanes and floods.
Impossible. It would have to be somebody's fault, and Democrats never take responsibility for their own actions, so who does that leave?
They are, however, really good about taking responsibility for the actions of others. Which is why we've been told constantly that everything good that happened in the last eight years was caused by Bill Clinton.
Deny responsibility when you have it, claim responsibility when you don't, it's on page three of the WLW Conspiracy playbook.
Sure, we could have capitulated and paid the dhimmi tax - and all would've been hunky-dorey...I, for one, am pleased that evil President Bush pursued his damaging policies to destroy our enemies (i.e., to 'be a terror to those that would do evil'). And yes, I suppose an unhappy outcome of this policy is that it has cheesed off our enemies (and their sycophants)...
Now if Mr. Obama was referring to President Bush's 'damaging policies' of lackadaisical border control, and increasing the bloat of our government -- I suppose we'd be in agreement, but I don't think the enlightened one considers this to be damage (and although I criticize President Bush on these points, he was a heckuva lot better than the alternatives)...
The America Public should not be hit with buyer's remorse a week after he is sworn in.
Bill Clinton's first action (which had not been discussed in the campaign) was “Don't ask, don't tell”, another early agenda item was nationalized health care.
They cannot win in the arena of ideas. If we are to “Accept change”, then we should be discussing just what that change will entail.
Uh huh. I’m sure when OBiden bin Hidin drew the comparison between a “brilliant 47-year old man” and John Kennedy, he meant that to apply equally to...John McCain.
I wish I could wake up from the nightmare of this sideshow freak and his whole carnival of MSM circus geeks biting the heads off rodents.
I disagree with everyone sorry.
China will invade Taiwan, with Obama’s approval.
Iran and others will destroy Israel, with Obama’s approval.
Russia (fellow Red Travelers) will attack Poland and other upstarts regaining the USSR, with Obama’s approval.
Why do you think Japan and South Korea are so afraid? Obama will side with Communists against free countries.
THAT is the plan. THAT is why Biden is warning us about unpopular decisions.
THEIR PLANS FOR US HORRIBLE AND UNTHINKABLE!!
BACKTRACKING!.....Biden is so ignorant.
“Rhetorical flourishes”? Is that like “wardrobe malfunction” except in this case Biden showed his a$$?
"Now was John McCain a socialist back in 2000 when he opposed the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans?" Obama said. "It's not a very plausible argument that he's making right now, and I think it's an indication now that they have run out of ideas."
No, Mr. Oh-so-intellectual, let me help you out:
Random House Unabridged Dictionary: socialism
Sheesh.

This very unsettling.
What is unsettling to me, is, Powell seems to know about it, yet disclaims knowing about it.
I understand the Government has secrets it must keep, but if the USA has been threatened in a specific manner as indicated by powell, biden, and other "Government need-to-knows", then it is about time We the People were told.
So what would Obie change to put US more at risk???
Biden said,”Mark my word....Mark my word”...............so I did.
After reading the way Fox wrote this, I can’t for the life of me see how anyone can believe that Fox is in the tank for Obama; they dressed up each of his actual quotes with the language he should have used much the same way a long-suffering editor will clean up the awkward phrasing of a first book with a wildly popular sports figure.
Here’s a candidate with a 2 to one or greater advantage in his advertising budget and he doesn’t have to spend a sou on the major media and he’s begging for a chance to get his message out?
*cough*bullshit*cough*
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I think they'll try to nationalize some popular financial institutions. Just a hunch.
Why did Biden make an explicit comparison to a young JFK?
So, Obama, doe Powell engage in these fluorishes?
